The article presents a dissertation which explores the nature of object marking in American Sign Language (ASL) by investigating the object marking by means of directionality and of handling classifiers. It discusses how one can account for argument marking on a verb within the linguistic system other than adding knowledge of the descriptive study of ASL. It also cites the difference of object marking in ASL from both agreement and clitic-doubling in spoken languages.

The article discusses the influence of the American English to second generation Laos immigrants in the U.S. It states that the first generation of immigrants is in favor of using a standard classifiers while their children employ alternative such as non-standard variants. It also mentions that the language differences of the children of Lao immigrants have not been determined.
