C.I. Disperse Blue 79 (DB79) is a commercially significant dye that has been used over the last 15 years predominantly for disperse dyeing and printing of polyester fibers. Its annual production is approximately 2.0 million pounds, making it one of the highest volume azo dyes manufactured throughout the world. In November 1986, the Interagency Testing Committee added DB79 to its priority list for "recommended testing." The major manufacturers of 0B79 in the U.S. agreed to a testing consent order with the EPA which became effective November 1989. Studies conducted under the consent order included Drosophila SLRL mutagenicity, 90-day subchronic toxicity, developmental toxicity in rats and rabbits, metabolism and disposition, and early life stage aquatic toxicity in rainbow trout. Results of these studies will be presented and the health and safety implications for OB79 will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
