The article focuses on the U.S. Geological Survey's Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center's study, which was started in 2004, on the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat called the Ope'ape'a. Its geographic distribution, roosting and foraging behavior, and reproductive timing are being studied to improve the conservation of this subspecies with the use of radiotransmitters and acoustic monitors, also called bat monitors. It describes the vertical migration of the bats and the possible role of torpor for the bats' energy conservation in cold weather.
