This study explores factors that influence problem-solving coping style across cultures. There was no significant difference in applying problem solving across U.S., Taiwanese, and Chinese samples. The effective predictors of problem solving in the U.S. and Chinese samples were self-efficacy and trait resilience, respectively. In the Taiwanese sample, predictors were self-efficacy and trait resilience. Trait resilience was found to mediate the effect of self-efficacy on problem solving in the Taiwanese and Chinese samples. This study compared predictors of active coping (people's tendency to actively cope with stress) among college students in the United States and Taiwan. In both samples, trait resilience predicted active coping and mediated the effect of self-efficacy on active coping. The findings indicate that trait resilience influences college students' active coping with stress, regardless of their cultural backgrounds. Background: Daratumumab, a CD38 monoclonal antibody, has demonstrated efficacy as monotherapy and combination therapy across several indications, both among newly-diagnosed and refractory patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, there is limited evidence on treatment patterns and effectiveness of daratumumab in the real-world setting, particularly in first line (1 L). This study aimed to describe real-world treatment patterns and clinical outcomes among patients initiating daratumumab across different lines of therapy. Methods: A retrospective chart review of adult patients with MM initiating daratumumab between November 2015 and March 2021 was conducted at two clinical sites in the United States. De-identified patient-level data were abstracted in an electronic case report form. Patient characteristics and treatment patterns were described. Clinical outcomes including overall response rate (ORR), progression-free survival, and time to next line of therapy were reported using descriptive statistics and stratified by line of therapy (1 L, second line [2 L] or third line or later [3 L+]). A sub-group analysis evaluated treatment patterns and ORR among patients re-treated with daratumumab. Results: A total of 299 patients were included in the study (mean age: 68 years; 55% male). Among them, 26 were 1 L patients, 66 were 2 L patients, and 207 were 3 L+ patients; 110 patients (36.8%) received a stem cell transplant prior to daratumumab initiation. The mean duration of follow-up was 10 months among 1 L patients and 19 months among 2 L and 3 L+ patients. Patients who initiated daratumumab in 1 L had a 100% ORR, while those initiating in 2 L and 3 L+ had an ORR of 78.8 and 65.2%, respectively. Among re-treated patients, ORR was 66.7% during the first treatment segment, and 52.9% during the second treatment segment. Kaplan-Meier rates of progression-free survival at 12 months were 89.9, 75.2, and 53.1% among patients who initiated daratumumab in 1 L, 2 L, and 3 L+, respectively. Kaplan-Meier rates of time to next line of therapy at 12 months were 94.1, 73.4, and 50.0% among patients who initiated daratumumab in 1 L, 2 L, and 3 L+, respectively. Summary: Background: There are concerns that fruit juice and milk contribute to childhood obesity. Objective: Determine the relationship between fruit juice and milk intakes and body mass index (BMI) change among preadolescents/adolescents. Methods: Participants aged 9 to 16 years old from the Growing Up Today Study II completed surveys including validated food frequency questionnaires in 2004, 2006 and 2008. The contributions of one serving of juice or milk to total energy intake and 2‐year change in BMI were evaluated using multiple linear regression. Additional analyses were conducted with subgroups of juice (orange juice and other fruit juice) and milk (low fat and high fat). Missing values for BMI were imputed using a multiple imputation approach, after which data from 8173 participants and 13 717 2‐year interval observations were analysed. Results: Baseline fruit juice consumption was inversely associated with BMI change in girls (β = −.102 kg/m2, SE = 0.038, P value =.008) but not boys after controlling for race, age, baseline BMI, and baseline and 2‐year changes in total energy intake and physical activity. Orange juice was inversely associated with BMI change among girls (β = −.137 kg/m2, SE = 0.053, P value =.010) while other fruit juice, low fat and high fat milk were not associated with BMI change. Conclusion: Orange juice was inversely associated with 2‐year BMI change among preadolescent/adolescent girls but not boys and there were no significant associations with other juices or milk among either gender. Purpose: Although evidence strongly supports that antioxidant-rich diets reduce risk of chronic disease and mortality, findings from the previous studies on the effect of individual antioxidants on mortality have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and all-cause and disease-specific mortality in a representative sample of the US population.Methods: A total of 23,595 US adults aged 30 years and older in NHANES 1988-1994 and 1999-2004 were selected for this study. Dietary TAC was calculated from 1-day 24-h diet recall data at baseline and all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality was assessed through December 31, 2011.Results: During a mean follow-up of 13 years, deaths from all-cause, cancer and CVD were 7157, 1578, and 2155, respectively. Using cause-specific Cox proportional hazards models, inverse associations and linear trends were observed between dietary TAC and all-cause mortality [highest quartile (Q4) versus Q1 ref. HR 0.78; 95% CI 0.71-0.86], cancer mortality (Q4 versus Q1 ref. HR 0.75; 95% CI 0.60-0.93), and CVD mortality (Q4 versus Q1 ref. HR 0.83; 95% CI 0.69-0.99), respectively, after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, and total energy intake. The inverse association and linear trend still remained between dietary TAC and all-cause mortality (Q4 versus Q1 ref. HR 0.79; 95% CI 0.71-0.87) and CVD mortality (Q4 versus Q1 ref. HR 0.74; 95% CI 0.61-0.89) when further adjusted for relevant covariates.Conclusions: These findings support that antioxidant-rich diets are beneficial to reducing risk of death from all-cause and CVD. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a risk factor for all-cause mortality in the United States, but the evidence from China is limited. We investigate whether prognosis of CKD (mortality) differs between the two countries. In particular, we sought to compare the strength of association between CKD stage and all-cause mortality, by country. Methods: Mortality-linked data from China National Survey of Chronic Kidney Disease (urban population, n = 25,269) and US NHANES (2005–2010, n = 15,209) for adults >20 years old were analyzed. The Chinese cohort was followed until Dec 31, 2013, while the NHANES cohort until Dec 31, 2011. CKD was defined by eGFR <60ml/min/1.73m2 or albuminuria (defined as ACR ≥30mg/g). Weighted Cox models were used to evaluate the association between the two CKD indicators and mortality. Both stratified and combined models (with country interactions) were explored. Results: The Chinese sample had a lower proportion of eGFR<60 ml/min/1.73m2 (3.7% vs. 6.9%) and albuminuria (7.6% vs. 9.0%), compared to the US. Higher rates of mortality were observed with higher stages of CKD in both countries. HRs for mortality in the more advanced CKD categories reached 2.18 (1.14–4.15) in China and 1.66 (1.18–2.32) in the US in the absence of albuminuria, and 2.30 (1.13–4.68) and 3.04 (2.33–3.96) in the presence of albuminuria. No significant interactions were detected between country and these categories. Conclusion: The association between albuminuria and reduced eGFR and all-cause mortality was similar in both countries, with albuminuria being associated with the larger effect size compared to lower eGFR. Using structural equation modeling, the authors evaluated a path model developed on the basis of resilience-stress theories. Participants were college students in the United States ( n = 207), China ( n = 209), and Taiwan ( n = 212). The relationships among stress, trait resilience, self-efficacy, secure attachment, and active coping were consistent across the 3 samples. These results may be related to the Westernization of Chinese and Taiwanese college students in the process of globalization. Practical and theoretical implications of the results are discussed. Objective: This study aimed to describe state Medicaid psychotropic-monitoring programs targeting youths.Methods: Key informants from each state Medicaid administration and the District of Columbia were invited to participate in a telephone-administered survey designed to assess the implementation strategies of the state psychotropic-monitoring program. Data were collected from August 2011 through December 2012. A total of 38 states participated, four declined, and nine did not respond to the invitation. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize monitoring programs.Results: Key informants from 28 of the 38 states (74%) reported a program in place, mostly prior authorization (68%). One-third of the programs (32%) had a two-tier review involving pharmacists and child psychiatrists.Conclusions: Although variability in psychotropic-monitoring programs may limit comparison of program impact across states, the variability provides an opportunity to investigate the impact of different models on best practices and the quality of care. Despite various weaknesses, the impact factor (IF) is still used as an important indictor for scientific quality in specific subject categories. In the current study, the IFs of rheumatology journals over the past 10 years were serially analyzed and compared with that from other fields. For the past 10 years (1999-2008), the IFs published by the Institute for Scientific Information in the Science Citation Index-Journal Citation Report were analyzed. For the majority of rheumatology journals, the IF shows a gradually increasing trend. The mean and median level of increase of IF from 1999 to 2008 is 233.9 and 66.5%, respectively. The increase in IF from 1999 or the first year with IF documentation to that in 2008 was higher for European journals than for the USA journals. The aggregate IF and the median IF of rheumatology journals remained within the top 30% and top 15% in clinical medical and all the scientific categories, respectively. Over the past 10 years, rheumatology journals showed a general increase in IF and rheumatology remained a leading discipline. Purpose: The EORTC 22911 and the SWOG 8794 studies, presented in 2004 and 2005, showed that adjuvant radiation therapy after prostatectomy improved biochemical disease-free survival in men with adverse pathological features. In this study we evaluated the use of post-prostatectomy radiation therapy following the presentation of these results, and the impact of margin involvement, pathological tumor stage, Gleason score and sociodemographic factors on post-prostatectomy radiation therapy recommendations. Materials and Methods: The SEER cancer registry was used to identify 21,917 men who underwent radical prostatectomy for N0M0 prostate cancer with adverse pathological features (pT3 or margin positive pT2 disease) from 2000 through 2007. Results: After adjusting for age, diagnosis year, race, SEER region and county education level in a multivariable regression model, decreasing age, margin involvement and Gleason 8 to 10 cancer were associated with receiving post-prostatectomy radiation therapy (all p <0.001). Men with pT3a (AOR 2.95, CI 2.64–3.29) and pT3b disease (AOR 6.77, CI 5.75–7.97) were more likely to receive post-prostatectomy radiation therapy than those with pT2 disease. The use of post-prostatectomy radiation therapy did not increase after the presentation of study results (p = 0.166). Conclusions: While men with involved margins and more aggressive pathological disease features were more likely to receive post-prostatectomy radiation therapy, recommendations for post-prostatectomy radiation did not increase after the initial reports from the randomized trials, perhaps because these studies initially reported improved biochemical disease-free survival but not overall survival. Whether the recent report of a survival benefit from adjuvant radiation therapy in the SWOG trial will impact patterns of care requires further followup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Real-world data on usage and associated outcomes with hereditary angioedema (HAE)-specific medications introduced to the United States (US) market since 2009 are very limited. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate real-world treatment patterns of HAE-specific medications in the US and to assess their impact on healthcare resource utilization (HCRU). This analysis used IMS PharMetrics PlusTM database records (2006-2014) of patients with HAE, ≥1 insurance claim for an HAE-specific medication, and continuous insurance enrollment for ≥3 months following the first HAE prescription claim.Results: Of 631 total patients, 434 (68.8%) reported C1-INH(IV) use; 396 (62.8%) reported using ecallantide and/or icatibant. There were 306 episodes of prophylactic use of C1-INH(IV) (defined by continuous refills averaging ≥1500 IU/week for ≥13 weeks) in 155 patients; use of ≥1 on-demand rescue medication was implicated during 53% (163/306) of those episodes. Sixty-eight (20.2%) of 336 C1-INH(IV) users eligible for the HCRU analysis were hospitalized at least once, and 191 (56.8%) visited the emergency department (ED). Eighteen patients (5.4%) had a central venous access device (CVAD); of these, 5 (27.7%) required hospitalization and 14 (77.7%) had an ED visit. The adjusted relative risk of hospitalization and/or ED visits for patients with a CVAD was 2.6 (95% CI: 0.17, 39.23) compared to C1-INH(IV) users without a CVAD.Conclusions: Despite widespread availability of modern HAE medications in the US, we identified a subset of patients requiring long-term prophylaxis who continue to be burdened by frequent rescue medication usage and/or complications related to the use of CVADs for intravenous HAE medication. Many existing and emerging cancer therapies have a significant effect on the cardiovascular health of patients with cancer and cancer survivors. This paper examines current aspects of interdisciplinary cardio-oncology clinical care delivery and education in the United States and outlines how these data provide a platform for future development of the field. We present the results of the nationwide survey on cardio-oncology services, practices, and opinions, conducted among chiefs of cardiology and program directors, which demonstrate ranges of clinical activities and identify significant interest for increased educational opportunities and expert training of cardiovascular physicians in this field. The survey respondents recognized clinical relevance but emphasized lack of national guidelines, lack of funds, and limited awareness and infrastructure as the main challenges for development and growth of cardio-oncology. We discuss potential solutions to unmet needs through interdisciplinary collaboration and the active roles of professional societies and other stakeholders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
