Background/Purpose Return to sport decision-making may be improved by assessing an athlete's ability to coordinate movement with opponents in sport. The purpose was to investigate whether previous injuries associated with female soccer players' interpersonal coordination during a collision avoidance task. The authors hypothesized that external perturbations would disrupt the strength and stability of coordinated movement, and that individuals with a history of injury would be less likely to recover coordinated movement. Study Design Cross-Sectional Methods Nine female athletes with a history of lower extremity injuries and nine without injuries were paired into dyads. Each dyad completed twenty trials of an externally paced collision-avoidance agility task with an unanticipated perturbation. Participant trajectories were digitized and analyzed using cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) to determine the strength and stability of interpersonal coordination dynamics. Trials in which participants with injury history assumed leader or follower roles within each dyad were then used to study how dyadic coordination varied across task stages (early, perturbation, and late) using linear mixed effect models. Cohen's d effect sizes were calculated to demonstrate magnitude of differences. In exploratory analysis, psychological readiness (i.e., self-reported knee functioning, fear of injury, and risk-taking propensity) was evaluated for their association with leader-follower status. Results Perturbation disrupted the strength (R2=0.65, p<0.001, early=49.7±1.7, perturbation=41.1±1.7, d=0.39) and stability (R2=0.71, p < 0.001, early=65.0±1.6, perturbation=58.0±1.7, d=0.38) of interpersonal coordination regardless of leader-follower status. Individuals with injury history failed to restore coordination after the perturbation compared to control participants (injury=44.2.0±2.1, control=50.8±2.6, d=0.39). Neither demographic nor psychological measures were associated with leader-follower roles (B=0.039, p=0.224). Conclusion Individuals with a history of lower extremity injury may have a diminished ability to adapt interpersonal coordination to perturbations, possibly contributing to a higher risk of re-injury. One of the most important and lasting legacies of the 20th century is globalization and the increased integration among countries and economies leading to more interactions among the peoples of different cultures. This effect has also percolated into the business environment and into the realm of business education. We have seen the internationalization of the business curriculum, the creation of more study abroad programs for students, and the increased efforts towards exchange programs for educators. Conflicts in cross-cultural learning environments have been examined primarily from the perspective of the student, with limited research on the experiences of the teacher. We use Hofstede's (1980) cultural dimensions to identify the characteristics of teacher-student pairs from different cultures, explore the potential conflicts that may be created, and offer suggestions for developing strategies to be a globally competent teacher.

We sought to document current surgical practices among gynecologic oncologists in the United States. In March/April 2020, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among members of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology to identify gynecologic oncology practice trends in the United States. The survey collected demographic data and queried participants on types of surgical procedures performed and chemotherapy use. Univariant and multivariant analyses were used to evaluate the association between surgeon practice type, region of practice, working with gynecologic oncology fellows, time in practice, and dominant surgical modality of practice on performance of specific procedures. Among 1199 gynecologic oncology surgeons who were emailed the survey, 724 completed the survey (60.4% response rate). Of these respondents, 170 (23.5%) were within 6 years of fellowship graduation, 368 (50.8%) identified as female; and 479 (66.2%) worked in an academic setting. Surgeons who worked with gynecologic oncology fellows were more likely to perform bowel surgery, upper abdominal surgery, complex upper abdominal surgery, and prescribe chemotherapy. Surgeons who were ≥ 13 years out from fellowship graduation were more likely to perform bowel surgery and complex abdominal surgery and less likely to prescribe chemotherapy and perform sentinel lymph node dissections (P < 0.05). These findings highlight the variation in surgical procedures performed by gynecologic oncologists in the United States. Background: A growing literature has drawn attention to the central role that schools play in supporting the adjustment of resettled refugee youth and promoting their mental health and psychosocial wellbeing. In particular, the recent proliferation of school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives presents an opportunity to strengthen supports for resettled adolescents. This participatory research study aims to understand how high school students resettled from countries in the Middle East and North Africa region are experiencing the challenges and opportunities of acculturation and the ways in which they believe schools can better support them in this process.Methods: We analyzed primary data collected during focus group discussions as part of the SALaMA study. During these discussions, we used participatory ranking methodology to elicit adolescents' suggestions on how high schools can better support students both academically and psychosocially after resettlement. Fourteen focus group discussions were held with male (n = 38) and female (n = 31) adolescents aged 14-20 years, who were selected purposively across six public high schools in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Austin, Texas, and Detroit, Michigan. Participants offered suggestions and then ranked them in order of importance using consensus ranking.Results: Thematic analysis of the PRM results across sites produced a wealth of suggestions centered around three broad themes, namely: skills related to navigating social and academic challenges, culturally responsive teaching, and socially and culturally equitable learning environments.Conclusions: Findings reported illustrate limitations of the conventional, universal SEL model and shed light on how schools can adapt transformative SEL strategies to serve their students better, especially newcomers from conflict-affected countries. The article argues that Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) laws do not adequately protect respondents' due process rights. It proposes a more rights-protective application of the Mathews test to expand procedural protections for respondents in SVP civil commitment proceedings. Additional procedures to better protect the rights of respondents are presented.

The American Camp Association and Association of Camp Nursing collaborated for the creation of the Healthy Camps initiatives from 2006-2020. During that time, the initiative developed a holistic approach to a healthy camp framework by examining and addressing a range of challenges experienced by camp programs in the United States. Camper and staff mental, emotional, and social health (MESH) became an important focus, as camp professionals grew increasingly concerned with the behaviors and challenges exhibited by campers and staff during their programs. The purpose of this article is to share the extensive work and resources developed by the Healthy Camps initiatives to help camp professionals address the mental, emotional and social health needs of their campers and staff. This paper provides an overview of what lies ahead of the United States in the event that Donald John Trump either lost or won a reelection bid. The uncertainty of the election outcomes is what we refer to as a litmus test. In this paper, we reflect on the ongoing events shaping the United States ahead of the 2020 presidential election and their implications on the United States. We suggest that the election provide a litmus test in shaping the politics of the United States in answering numerous questions raised in the current Trump administration. We deduce that the election could give birth to the new form of Brexit in the form of "U.S. exit" in the event the United States ignores processes that foster institutional legitimacy and civic engagement to build lost "trust" in the Americanized system. While bullying is a serious concern for students and educators alike, empirically tested interventions are needed. This study examined the impact of a bullying intervention curriculum at a public middle school in the Midwest. This intervention, COREMatters, was designed to reduce bullying behaviors, foster a greater sense of community cohesion and trust in the school, improve school climate, and increase student self-esteem. As such, the intervention required participation of teachers, administrators, students, and outside experts. COREMatters was modeled after theoretical frameworks of socioemotional learning and Bloom's taxonomy. Additionally, components of This We Believe outlining successful schools were considered. Uniquely contributing to this intervention is the inclusion of martial arts instruction. The intervention was taught as a whole, integrated model. The t-tests indicated significant differences between the control and intervention groups on measures of school climate, student self-esteem, and school cohesion and trust. Students in the intervention group scored higher in measures of self-esteem and rated their schools more positively on measures of cohesion and trust and climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Introduction of the category III CPT code (0437T) for prophylactic mesh augmentation (PMA) highlights efforts to reduce incisional hernia (IH). PMA's value in the context of value-based care requires understanding both the cost of IH development and the savings from prevention. We hypothesized large healthcare costs with IH development. Appreciating which subsets of patients are at highest risk for IH, and the subsets who have the costliest care is essential in targeting interventions for hernia prevention.Methods: Retrospective cohort study utilizing data from Truven Health Analytic MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters Database from calendar years 2011-2014. Adults undergoing open abdominal operations with continued enrollment 3-year post-surgery were included. Inpatient and outpatient claims were tracked over 3 years to identify IH. Quantile regression estimated the association between conditional distribution of total cost and IH. A generalized linear model with gamma distribution estimated the association of conditional mean of total cost and IH. Models were adjusted for confounding cost covariates (e.g., age, gender, obesity, smoking, cancer).Results: 14,290 patients were identified, 1294 (9.1%) developed IH, 48% within 1-year, 33% at 1-2 years, and 19% at 2-3 years post-surgery. 515 underwent stoma creation, 4579 colon resection, 2263 liver/kidney, 3890 peritoneal, 3043 other (foregut, appendectomy, cholecystectomy). Rate of IH formation was 25, 13, 5.9, 6.3, and 6.3%, respectively. The difference in median expenditures for IH development versus no IH was ostomies: $26,098, colorectal: $21,211, liver/kidney: $23,811, peritoneal: $25,554, others: $28,870 (p < 0.0.01). IH within 1 year was more expensive than within 3 years in the following categories: colorectal ($16,034, p = 0.0385), liver/kidney ($27,145, p = 0.0004), and ostomy ($18,992, p = 0.0035).Conclusion: IH is a common occurrence imposing significant healthcare burden. Higher costs occur when IH occurs within 1 year versus 3 years from the index-procedure. This highlights the importance of hernia prevention techniques and the question of whether temporizing closure adjuncts  are appropriate in high-risk patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many forms of victimization, including bullying and property crime, are increasingly moving online, but most studies of poly-victimization still primarily focus on in-person crime and violence. Few studies have examined the importance of incorporating technology-based victimizations for assessing the true burden of violence. The purpose of this study is to explore whether digital poly-victimization contributes to post-traumatic stress and anxiety/dysphoria symptoms after controlling for in-person poly-victimization. Given that technology use and technology-based victimization are changing rapidly, a mixed methods approach was adopted. In the first two phases, focus groups and cognitive interviews (89 total participants) were used to identify the range of digital victimization and develop the Digital Poly-Victimization Scale. In the third phase, the new measure was included in a community survey (n = 478, 57.5% female; 62.6% earning under $50,000 per year) in a rural Southern region, along with measures of in-person poly-victimization, posttraumatic stress and anxiety/dysphoria symptoms, and other outcomes and personal characteristics. A comprehensive measure of digital poly-victimization indicated that almost 3 in 4 participants (72.3%) had experienced at least one form of digital victimization. The results indicated that digital poly-victimization contributed unique variance to post-traumatic stress and anxiety/dysphoria symptoms (p < .001), health-related quality of life (p < .01), and subjective and family well-being (both p < .001), even after controlling for demographics and in-person poly-victimization. Digital victimization often presents fewer risks to perpetrators and can be expected to represent an increasing share of the societal burden of violence. Objectives To estimate the prevalence of constipation, fecal incontinence ( FI), and combined symptoms and to identify shared factors associated with bowel symptoms in older U.S. men and women Design Population-based cross-sectional study. Setting National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2010). Participants Women and men aged 50 and older. Measurements Constipation was defined as hard stool consistency on the validated Bristol Stool Form Scale or stool frequency of fewer than three bowel movements per week. FI was defined as at least monthly loss of solid, liquid, or mucus stool. Combined symptoms was defined as constipation and FI. Multinomial multivarible models adjusted for age, race, socioeconomic status, education, self-rated health, depression, impairments in activities of daily living, and number of comorbidities. Results Women (n = 3,078) reported higher prevalence of bowel symptoms than men (constipation 11.8% vs 4.7%%, FI 11.2% vs 8.6%, combined symptoms 1.4% vs 0.4%). In adjusted models, women had greater odds of having constipation (odds ratio ( OR) = 3.0, 95% confidence interval ( CI) = 2.3-3.8), FI ( OR = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.1-1.8), and combined symptoms ( OR = 4.6, 95% CI = 2.0-10.2) than men. Shared risk factors included poor self-rated health and depression symptoms (constipation: OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.4-2.4 and OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.0-3.2; FI: OR = 1.6, 95% CI = 1.2-2.2 and OR = 2.3 95% CI = 1.4-3.6; combined symptoms: OR = 2.6 95% CI = 1.5-4.8 and OR = 4.6, 95% CI = 1.3-16.4). Conclusion When defining constipation and FI using validated instruments, women had a much higher prevalence of constipation than men, whereas men had a higher prevalence of FI than constipation. Purpose: This paper examines the empirical relationship between national diversity on corporate boards, the level of product market internationalization, and firm value for a sample of US and non-US based multinational firms. Methodology/Data: We use a full information maximum likelihood (FIML) system equation approach to conduct the analysis, using a sample of 162 US-and non-US based multinational companies. Findings: The results suggest that the presence of independent board of directors and foreign executives reduce the likelihood of having a foreign national on the board of directors. We do not find a significant relationship between the presence of a foreign national on the board, the level of product market internationalization, and firm value. Implications/Limitations: An implication of these results is that the benefit of having a foreign national on the board of a multinational may be limited by the increased monitoring costs that may be associated with national diversity. A limitation of the study is that our sample is limited to only publicly traded firms. Originality/Value: The results from this paper provide useful information on whether there is any value to national diversity on the boards of multinational firms with regards to level of internationalization and firm value. Porhyromonas gingivalis has been isolated from periodontitis lesions in subjects form many geographical location. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether similar ribotypes of P. gingivalis could be detected among strains isolated in different countries. A total of 198 isolates of P. gingivalis were obtained from 52 periodontitis patients in Boston (130 isolates), Bergen, Norway (17 isolates), Khartoum, Sudan (26 isolates), and Bucharest, Romania (25 isolates). DNA was isolated from each strain, cut separately by the restriction endonucleases KpnI and PstI. The resulting preparations were subjected to electrophoresis in a 0.8% agarose gel using a Tris-acetate EDTA buffer. Uncut lambda and a 1000-bp fragment of 16S rRNA were included as internal standards in each lane. In addition, a HindIII digest of lambda was present in a separate lane in each run. The DNA fragments were transferred to a nylon membrane by downward capillary transfer. 16S rRNA bands were detected using a 1000-kb digoxigenin-labelled probe generated by a polymerase chain reaction. At the same time, a digoxigenin-labelled probe to lambda was employed to detect the internal and molecular weight standards. The bands were detected using antibody to digoxigenin conjugated to alkaline phosphatase and chemiluminescence. The positions of the bands relative to the internal standards were determined and normalized to correct for run-to-run variations, and the molecular weight of each band was determined by comparison with standards within each gel. The resulting data for the 2 enzymes were combined and subjected to cluster analysis using an average unweighted linkage sort. In some instances, isolates that appeared to be of identical ribotype using one endonuclease gave different ribotype using one endonuclease gave different ribotypes using the other. This article presents a study that provides an analysis of the stock price dynamics in overlapped market segments. Specifically, the article authors examine the stock price dynamics for the oil and oil-related industry in the U.S. The worldwide stock market crash of 1987 has indicated the need for a better understanding of the transmission mechanism of stock price formation. To meet this need, a number of recent studies have conducted in-depth analysis of the interdependence of stock prices, prices' volatility and its transmission across national stock markets. The generalized conclusion of these studies is that there is a significant volatility spillover across national stock markets with some delay in the adjustment process. The phenomenon is generally known as the contagion effect. It has been argued that contagion effects among financial institutions can be driven by the psychological panic among depositors rather than by information in the stock market. Hence, there is a need to further examine the transmission process of stock price formation, namely, contagion effect, among industrial firms within a national market.

Poor mental health among U.S. adolescents has reach epidemic proportions, with those from the Middle East and North African region exhibiting increased risk for distress and suicide ideation. This mixed-methods study analyzes quantitative data from first- and second-generation Arab adolescents (n = 171) and qualitative data from a participatory study conducted with 11 adolescents of the same population to understand the role of cultural resources in coping. Drawing on the Intersectional Theory of Cultural Repertoires in Health, we show that: 1) cultural resources underlie meaning-making throughout coping; 2) coping strategies are inseparable from the influence of peer and familial relationships, as dictated through the social norms and other cultural resources; 3) collectively held repertoires of coping can promote belonging, affirm identity, and protect against discrimination; and 4) the outcomes of coping strategies, and the culturally informed meaning individuals make of these outcomes, influence their future coping behaviors. • MENA-background adolescents exhibit elevated mental health risks compared to peers. • This mixed methods analysis reveals coping behavior variation among adolescents. • Cultural repertoires enable and constrain individuals' access to different coping strategies. • Cultural resources underlie meaning-making in the coping process. • Cultural resources shape youth coping with family, peers, and online stressors.
