A new ceramic material developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US could help expand the applications for solid oxide fuel cells, by offering improved sulfur tolerance and resistance to carbon buildup. The BZCYYb (barium-zirconium-cerium-yttrium-ytterbium oxide) material could be used as a coating on the traditional Ni-YSZ anode, to replace YSZ in the anode, and even to replace the entire YSZ electrolyte system. In the US, scientists at the Department of Energy''s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have completed the first in a series of fundamental studies of electrode behavior for a solid oxide fuel cell operating with a molten tin anode. NETL has also announced that its Hybrid Performance Fuel Cell Test Facility – known as ‘Hyper’ – recently completed a full-system safety inspection and overhaul by project personnel, and is now back in operation.
