To compare menstrual health literacy among adolescents and young adults on the basis of family religious background and United States region We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of post-menarcheal US adolescents and young adults aged 14-24 years who identified their family religious background, including Christian or non-religious, with recruitment via the social media platform TikTok. We asked participants several questions to assess their health literacy regarding common myths about the use of gonadal steroid hormones for menstrual suppression. From 3250 online survey respondents, 2997 met the criteria for analysis, with 1989 identifying their family as Christian (66.4%) and 1008 identifying their family as non-religious (33.6%), with equal representation by US region. Health literacy was lower among those with a Christian family background, with concerns that menstrual suppression is unhealthy (16.4% vs 10.5% with non-religious background, P <.01), is unsafe (31.4% vs 24.2%, P <.01), and could lead to infertility (32.6% vs 20.0%, P <.01). Similarly, adolescents and young adults from the US South were worried that menstrual suppression is unhealthy (31.5%; P <.01) and would lead to infertility (33.8%; P <.01). Health literacy is lower among adolescents and young adults with a Christian family background and those who live in the South. These results demonstrate a need for an evidence-based national curriculum that addresses the safe and effective use of hormonal medications for menstrual suppression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) may help reduce residual nightmares and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in veterans after trauma-focused PTSD treatment. Fifteen male U.S. veterans with PTSD and trauma-related nightmares, who had not previously completed trauma-focused PTSD treatment, attended 6 IRT group sessions. No benefits were observed immediately posttreatment. At 3- and 6-month follow-up, however, trauma-related nightmare frequency (nights/week) decreased (p < .01). The number of trauma-related nightmares/week (p < .01), number of total nightmares/week (p < .05), and PTSD symptoms (p < .05) also decreased at 3 months. The overall F test for time was significant (p < .05) for nightmare severity and fear of sleep. No effects were found on measures of the impact of nightmares, sleep quality, or depression. Over several months, representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science and National Institutes of Health (NIH) had a number of meetings that lead to the conclusion that innovations in the Nation's health care could be realized by more directed interactions between NIH and DOE. It became clear that the expertise amassed and instrumentation advances developed at the DOE physical science laboratories to enable cutting-edge research in particle physics could also feed innovation in medical healthcare. To meet their scientific mission, the DOE laboratories created advances in such technologies as particle beam generation, radioisotope production, high-energy particle detection and imaging, superconducting particle accelerators, superconducting magnets, cryogenics, high-speed electronics, artificial intelligence, and big data. To move forward, NIH and DOE initiated the process of convening a joint workshop which occurred on July 12th and 13th, 2021.
