Local television news coverage is important for both incumbents and constituents, but not all legislators win the same amount or the same kind of coverage. Indeed, a number of factors influence the degree to which the local media cover various legislators. One such factor may be a House member's appearance. In this paper, I examine whether and how local television news coverage differs for female and minority legislators. Particularly, I find that local television newscasts devote more coverage to African American members of Congress, but this coverage is also more race-oriented, especially in less diverse markets. When accounting for race and gender oriented coverage, African American and Hispanic legislators receive similar amounts of coverage while female House members are actually covered less frequently. I conclude by discussing the consequences of television coverage that does not reflect reality, but rather reflects and exacerbates race and gender biases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
