1. CITY2000: A Holistic Approach to Administering Image Resources.

Abstract

In June, 2001 the CITY2000 Foundation donated 500,000 photographic negatives, over 500 audio- and videotapes, and office archives to the University of Illinois at Chicago. The collection represents an image time capsule of a major American city during the year of the millennium. Every class of individual, event of the year, and neighborhood was explored by 200 professional photographers and brought together in this unique archive. As part of its agreement in accepting the archive, the UIC Library committed to making the collection available at least until the year 3000. 4. The Endangered Science Journal Collection in a Medium-Sized Academic Library: A Comparative Analysis.

Abstract

A 1991-2001 comparative analysis of science journal cancellations in a medium-sized academic library provides data different from a national "Annual Periodical Price Survey Report" (APPSR). After canceling 50.3 percent of Booth Library's most expensive STM (scientific, technical, and medical) journals, data show that the average cost of a science journal in the library at Eastern Illinois University is more than what the average cost should be for a medium-sized academic library. If cost determines the academic nature of a scholarly journal and its appropriateness for types of libraries, then this analysis means that some medium-sized academic libraries, such as Booth, subscribe to STM titles that are more suitable for large research libraries. Abstract

Although much has been written about the impact of the Internet and the Web on libraries and librarianship, relatively little attention has been devoted to the subject of librarians as creators and even marketers of new online services. The present article describes two fee-based online services at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign: the online version of the American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES); and the IRIS suite of funding-information services. The author discusses the pros and cons of in-house content-creation and concludes that academic libraries have the raw materials and the know how to create valuable new online services, especially reference services. With $20,000 in funding from the Ferry Family Trust, library staff were able to equip a small room with a single workstation fully equipped a computer, two monitors, software, a scanner, and more.
