OBJECTIVES. We reviewed the use of social media and its influence on rhinoplasty decisions. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The literature survey was performed in PubMed, EBSCO, UpToDate, and ProQuest Central databases of Kırıkkale University and Google and Google Scholar databases. RESULTS. Networking features available through social media sites allow users to discover and share countless photos, videos and links from their desktops and mobile devices. In the United Kingdom, over 55% of facial plastic surgeons reported that their cosmetic patients were inspired to look better in selfies. 53.4% of respondents felt that TV shows promoting plastic surgery impacted the popularity of such procedures, and 65.0% of respondents believed that social media had a similar effect. Males reported being much less satisfied with surgery than females and were less specific about why they were unhappy. One-third of patients regularly looked for information about rhinoplasty on social media. Less than a third were affected by celebrities who had rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons. However, over three percent believed the social media ads portraying rhinoplasty as a safe surgical procedure. CONCLUSION. We concluded that social media platforms play a significant role for the decision to undergo rhinoplasty and postoperative patient satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social media use increased during the COVID-19 pandemic with platforms providing an important forum for communication and self-expression. In this study, we explore shifts in online posting behaviors and self-presentation following the onset of lockdown. Content analysis of active Instagram accounts (n = 73) was conducted for the 3-month period before and immediately following the start of lockdown in the UK, and compared to psychological well-being, social media dependency and motives for online self-presentation during lockdown. Changes in the nature of images and captions used by profile owners were found following the start of lockdown, with more selfies and throwback photographs of past events being posted. Images in contexts depicting users as 'social', and positive or explanatory message captioning decreased during lockdown. Limited evidence was found to support the hypothesis that images posted were predictive of psychological well-being in lockdown. This article explores how extravagantly visible mask-wearing relates with consumer culture. Methodologically, three purposively chosen case studies of spectacular or performative mask-wearing are used to show what the face mask can teach us about consumer culture in a pandemic. First, a Daily Mail (UK) article in which an 'elderly shopper' is shamed for wearing a sanitary towel as a face mask is used to explore the politics of disposable commodities. Second, the multiplying portraits of people wearing masks archived under Instagram's #MaskSelfie hashtag allows an examination of how consumer-citizenship is performed. Third, the presence of extremely expensive luxury designer masks, as evidenced by Rich Mnisi's Swarovski-encrusted offering, is a base for considering how virtue signalling has become a platform for luxury branding. Building on these three examples, the argument is made that waste, selfies and luxury are modalities for a pandemic commodity politics that is layered over and into the scientific citizenship signalled by the wearing of face masks. Together these create what I call a 'sci-commodity' sensibility, in which the face mask as a technology has become integrated with the modalities of consumption. Hashtag feminism has become a popular tactic of online protest against gender inequality. Using the Twitter hashtag #distractinglysexy, women scientists posted pictures of themselves in labs or during field research to contest misogynist remarks by Nobel laureate Tim Hunt. We examined the resulting humorous and memetic discourse on Twitter as well as its coverage in news media combining a content analysis of the multimodal tweets with a qualitative discourse analysis of German and British news media. The results show that the ironic memes in which researchers addressed sexism in academia by parodying social norms and ideals of 'sexiness' yielded substantial media attention, but with differences in the two countries: While the hashtag #distractinglysexy initiated a broader debate on sexism and discrimination in academia in the UK news media discourse, in the German context, this form of 'self-mediation' was portrayed either as 'something funny on the Web' or as a harmful firestorm.
