Falls are a major cause of disability and death in older people, and preventing falls is a priority under standard six of the National Service Framework for Older People. In Great Britain, one third of people aged 65 years or over have fallen at least once and the risk of falling increases with age. One review of published studies on the incidence, causes, risk factors and preventive strategies for falls among older people living in residential care facilities indicated that weakness and gait disorders were the most common risk factors.
