Abstract

The article explores the "cheap books hypothesis" of eighteenth-century British cultural history which argues that the copyright law decision of 1774 by Great Britain's House of Lords for Donaldson v. Beckett changed the purchasing and reading habits of Britain's middle class. The author argues that the decision made available multi-volume anthologies, but that the prices of books remained stable between 1750 and 1790. Other subjects considered include the used-book trade, British classic literature or literary canon, book auction catalogues, and British popular culture.
