The article reports on the study conducted by R. J. Stockdale and colleagues on measuring river velocities using global positioning system (GPS) River Flow Tracers, commonly known as GRiFTers, in Great Britain. It reveals that more than 10,000 measurements were made in a three hour period and aggregated over a two meters grid to generate a genuine distributed representation of flow across the reach. The tool is used in measuring surface flow velocities in a 400 meters reach of the River Swale because it allows the rapid collection of spatially distributed, highly detailed surface velocity data. Researchers found an interesting insights into spatial variations in flow and longitudinal flow structures such as riffle-pool sequences.
