This project explored how iPads were being used in a range of K-12 schools to support the learning of students with a range of learning support needs. Groups of teachers (and other professionals) from the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK were invited to complete an online survey focused on the use of iPads in their classrooms, perspectives of their skill level, and how their school and school districts support the use of iPads. The survey focused on iPad use in classrooms (curriculum and skills); teachers' skill levels; whether iPads are addressed in the Individualised Education Program (IEP); the systemic support for the iPads; and the perceived benefits and barriers. The results reveal that respondents are using iPads across many areas of the curriculum, which affirms the research in the emerging literature base. However, there are teacher-reported differences in the manner and scope of iPad use in the classrooms and also the integration of the iPad in the IEP. The research also highlights variability in reported skill level for the iPad and an increased need for enhanced systemic support, such as training, funding, technical support and administrative support for the use of the iPad as a pedagogical tool.

The potential hydraulic behaviour of the fracture network in a major Triassic sandstone aquifer in the UK has been evaluated. The properties of the fracture network were determined using results from detailed scan line surveys at 10 sites, television and geophysical borehole logging, and packer testing. Six sets of discontinuities common to all sites were identified and statistically characterised (dip, strike, orientation, density, size, and estimated transmissivity). A discrete fracture network model was then used stochastically to investigate the properties of the network. In general, the network is poorly connected: it is estimated that 9% of the discontinuities intersecting boreholes are transmissive. The hydraulic behaviour of the network is generally dominated by one sub-horizontal bedding plane fracture set, although when present, a relatively infrequent north–south striking, sub-vertical set modifies the bulk flow properties significantly. Ignoring this latter set, the network''s minimum representative volume is about 35×35×35 m. The upscaled permeability is anisotropic, being typically 23 times greater in the horizontal than in the vertical. Tortuosity in the north–south direction is around 1.6. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Examines the shortcomings in tourism higher education research in Great Britain. Teaching evaluation research has occupied a conspicuous place within the spectrum of scientific inquiry in higher education. Interest in the question of what distinguishes superior from inferior teaching performance can be traced back to the early 1920s. Throughout its history, research on teaching evaluation has faced problems of methodology and theory. Most importantly, several documented studies have noted that there is little agreement over the description of good teaching and have warned that there is no reliable and valid way of evaluating teaching practice because of the subjective nature of evaluative judgments. Developed during an era when the study of non-observable phenomena was hardly considered legitimate, Q-methodology has struggled to gain acceptance as a credible scientific enterprise. With Q-methodology, the domain is subjectivity, the emphasis is on the individual and the methods are unique. A realistic view of the literature on tourism education may be that although it demonstrates considerable progress, it still has not been concerned with the issue of the teaching evaluation. The shortcomings loses much of its weight when subjects of different occupational roles are used because a source of bias is ruled out.

This article presents the evidence from a small study of the strategies used by hotel managers to retain their employees. The focus of attention is on exactly what managers do when confronted with an employee who is voluntarily leaving their employment. Two aspects are of particular interest; the role of increasing pay and the effect of increasing merit on strategies. The background to the study is the well-documented high level of labour turnover [Johnson, 1980 and 1985] and the evidence that managers appear to have chosen a dependence on the external labour market as a means of regulating labour [Simms et al., 1988].
