Being in a Service family can be a difficult position for children and parents alike due to high levels of mobility, parental separation, and the remaining parent's stress and emotional well-being. A Service family is defined as a family with one or both parents employed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). The current project looked at the under-researched area of supporting parents in Service families with an intervention funded by the MOD. Work carried out involved inviting parents of primary aged children to take part in consultation sessions and parent discussion groups, facilitated by educational psychologists (EPs). These looked at the psychological concepts of separation, anxiety, self esteem and friendship as well as positive psychology. Outcomes indicated that parents experienced an increase in confidence and a decrease in concern following the consultation sessions. Parents valued the support of the group and found the sessions practical and informative. This intervention filled a gap in support for Service parents and indicates a role for EPs in terms of further input and research.

In a context where the science underlying global issues such as climate change often loses out to political opinions and distortions, science teachers have a unique and very important role. Science teachers can use global-learning approaches to encourage learners to develop skills in scientific enquiry and critical analysis of scientific issues. This will help learners to make sense of global challenges and support them in responding effectively. This article sets out what a global-learning approach might entail, gives practical tips on how to bring global issues into the science classroom, and discusses the benefits that this can bring. Describes the context and objective of a Work-Place Cooperative Project (WPCP) established in the School of Geography at the University of Leeds in 1995. The project presents students with business, commerce, industry, and environmental research issues that have geographical dimensions. Includes a number of examples from the WPCP. (MJP)

Reports on a pilot study designed to assess the potential of computer-marked tests for allowing students to monitor their learning. Students' answers to multiple choice tests were fed into a computer that provided a full analysis of their strengths and weaknesses. Students responded favorably to the feedback. (MJP)

The report describes a demographic survey of 122 people with severe intellectual impairment over 50 years of age in a British community. Seven relatively independent clusters were identified: contact with relatives, community activities, community independence, friendship, service pathways, geriatrics/mobility, and physical treatment. Abstract: This paper argues that for translation to enhance the tourist experience literal accuracy is not enough and translations should be culturally sensitive to their target readers. Using the example of museum websites as a form of purposive tourism information designed to both inform and attract potential visitors, this paper analyzes websites of museums in the UK and China. We argue that no matter how accurate a translation may be, if the norms of the target tourist community have been ignored a translation may fail to achieve its purpose and may even have a detrimental effect on the tourism experience. By bringing together translation and tourism theory, we demonstrate when the cultural element of tourism is considered alongside the translation of texts, the need for linguistic accuracy is superseded by a requirement for cultural sensitivity. Purpose Student radiographers must possess certain abilities to progress in their training; these can be assessed in various ways. Bandura's social cognitive theory identifies self-efficacy as a key psychological construct with regard to how people adapt to environments where new skills are developed. Use of this construct is common in health care literature but little has been noted within radiographic literature. The authors sought to develop a self-efficacy scale for student radiographers. Method The scale was developed following a standard format. An initial pool of 80 items was generated and psychometric analysis was used to reduce this to 68 items. Radiography students drawn from 7 universities were participants (N=198) in validating the scale. Results The psychometric properties of the scale were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA), factor analysis and item analysis. ANOVA demonstrated an acceptable level of known group validity: first-year, second-year, and third-year students all scored significantly differently (P=.035) from one another. Factor analysis identified the most significant factor as confidence in image appraisal. The scale was refined using item and factor analysis to produce the final 25-item scale. Conclusion This is the first published domain-specific self-efficacy scale validated specifically for student radiographers. In its current format it may have pedagogical utility. Purpose Using quantitative and qualitative methods, this study evaluated the impact of a radiographer image-reading service supporting a minor injuries unit in a UK emergency department. Methods Quantitative analysis included a review of key performance indicators before and after implementation of the service and an audit of the radiographers' sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy. Qualitative analysis involved interviews with emergency department staff. Results Quantitative: Radiographers read 3778 images during the study period, representing 76.4% of the images that radiographers are qualified to read in the United Kingdom. The number of images read improved from 39.7% (preimplementation) to 80.4% (postimplementation). Timeliness of image reading improved from a preimplementation mean of 10.23 days (SD 7.65) to a postimplementation mean of 5.62 days (SD 4.27). The audit of image-reading radiographers' performance demonstrated a sensitivity of 92.7%, specificity of 99.1% and accuracy of 97%. Qualitative: Emergency department staff valued the input from image-reading radiographers in various ways. For example, the radiographer reading service improved patient management, enhanced the image appreciation skills of nurse practitioners and a physical therapist and improved the working relationship between these advanced practitioners and radiographers. Conclusion The image-reading radiographer service has increased the number of radiographic images read, improved report turnaround times and had positive effects on both patient management and the multidisciplinary health care team. The article focuses on how Great Britain dealt with aging and intellectual disability in their communities. Britain's successive government policy has been providing services to a large number of people with mental disability for the past thirty years. A speedy community care policy as well as rapid implementation of this policy were all seen in all of Britain's sector including national, regional and local levels.

Abstract: The primary surgical requirement of skin allografts within the UK is for cryopreserved viable allografts as these engraft to the wound bed and gain a vascular supply, thus providing true wound closure and a superior clinical performance. Consequently the only disinfection treatment the skin receives is exposure to an antibiotic cocktail. However, antibiotic treatment does not reliably decontaminate skin allografts and 22% of cryopreserved skin fails microbial acceptance criteria and cannot be used clinically. We describe here a study which was carried out to determine a means of saving and using the microbiologically failed skin. Four different treatment regimens were investigated; treatment with 20%, 50% and 85% glycerol followed by 25kGy irradiation at −80°C, and treatment with 85% glycerol at ambient (30–40°C) temperature and irradiation. Following treatment, the grafts were evaluated for their histological structure, in vitro cytotoxicity and handling properties. The radioprotective effects of the different glycerol concentrations and temperatures on microorganisms were also determined. The data indicate that 25kGy irradiation of deep-frozen skin in 20% glycerol sterilised the tissue without any histological, cytotoxicological or physical alterations compared to normal cryopreserved skin. In contrast, irradiation of all other glycerol concentrations elicited some cytotoxicity and/or histological effect. These non-viable grafts can be made available for surgical use when cryopreserved viable grafts are not available or required. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction: As part of the BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography programme students learn and undertake research relevant to their development as first post radiographers (dose optimisation and image quality) within the Research-Informed Teaching experience (RiTe). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the delivery of RiTe to our year 2 students was moved to an online format using Microsoft Teams and Blackboard Collaborate and focused on a key area of current practice - COVID-19 and chest X-ray imaging. Within RiTe students are placed into collaborative enquiry-based learning (CEBL) groups to share tasks, but to also support and learn from one another., Methods: An online survey was used to explore the year 2 student cohort task value and self-efficacy of this online version of RiTe., Results: A 73% (32/44) response rate was achieved. Students found the online version of RiTe to be a positive learning and development experience. There was strong agreement that they not only found it relevant to their area of practice (task-value), but also strongly agreed that they understood and could master the skills taught (self-efficacy)., Conclusion: This online version of RiTe was effectively structured to help scaffold student learning and development of research data analysis skills despite the lack of face-to-face teaching. The students also valued the topic area (COVID-19 and chest X-ray imaging). A blended learning approach with RiTe will be used next year with a combination of collaborative online teaching and physical data collection and analysis in the university-based X-ray imaging laboratory.
