Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were isolated from clones of Buddleia davidii collected at Long Ashton Research Station for assessment of horticultural characteristics. The AMV isolate investigated in this study (AMV-B) infected 18 species and cultivars of herbaceous test plants. The m vilto properties of AMV-B were determined. The virus was purified by permeation chromatography on controlled-pore glass beads and an antiserum prepared. AMV-B appeared to be serologically indistinguishable from AMV isolate 15/64. The sizes and shapes of the virus particles were those of classical AMV components. The capsid protein was a single polypepticle of Mr 24 375. Buddleia seedlings inoculated with AMV-B showed only mild chlorosis and slight distortion of leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Great Britain, the accepted definition of a supermarket is laid down by the trade journal Self Service and Supermarket. A supermarket is a type of shop, which satisfies three conditions. First, the sales area must be at least 2000 square feet. Second, there must be a complete range of foodstuffs and a basic range of household goods on sale. Third, there must be a self-service system in operation with at least three checkouts. Supermarket trading is one of the most competitive forms of retailing, and an area in which modern techniques of management, accounting and marketing are often to be found. One major factor in determining the profitability and performance of retail outlets is the size of their selling areas. For this reason, a study in 1969 analyzed the operating performance of a range of supermarkets of different sizes. The analysis reported in this paper is restricted to the profits, costs and performance recorded within supermarkets of different sizes. Stockholding costs, central administration costs and transport costs have not been included because of the difficulty in allocating these costs to particular supermarkets.
