The article discusses research by Jane Green and colleagues on the effect of oral biphosphonates on the risk of esophageal cancer, published in a 2010 issue of the "British Medical Journal." A case-control approach was used by the researchers to analyze the British General Practice Research Database. The researchers found that taking oral biphosphonates increased the risk of developing esophageal cancer. It is noted that one other study found no evidence of an increased risk of esophageal cancer in patients taking bisphosphonates.
