The article discusses the contributions of Torsten Gordh, the first anesthesiologist outside the U.S. and Great Britain, in the field of anesthesiology. He demonstrated a 50 percent reduction in surgical mortality after abdominal procedures while holding the position of a full-time anesthesiologist in the hospital in Europe. He also became the first Swedish Professor of anesthesiology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. At the age of 100, he still plays a role in anesthesiology in Sweden.
