This article discusses the use of antibiotics in predental treatment. Dental pharmacology issues relating to the prevention of infective endocarditis, damage and infection in implanted cardiovascular devices, and the prevention of noncardiovascular infections are considered. The modification of American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommendations regarding the preventative use of antibiotics in low to moderate heart risk patients is considered. The lack of enthusiasm of some physicians regarding this new protocol is presented as a barrier to patient compliance with the NICE recommendations.
