Despite an increased drive over the past two decades in Western societies to promote children's physically active play to improve their health, there are concerns that childhood has become less physically active. There are also fears that a previously naturally occurring aspect of childhood has become less authentically playful. Both trends highlight changes over time in the amount and type of play practiced by children and are often cited as consequences of generational shifts. Yet, research which analytically employs the concept of generation to connect changes to childhood with relevant social transformations is lacking. Inspired by Mannheim's conceptualisation of generations, this paper draws on life history interviews with 28 United Kingdom residents born between 1950 and 1994 to propose a fracturing of naturally occurring physical activity from childhood play. As shifts in childhood and parenting have become inextricably linked, this argument illustrates the impact of an intensification to parenting upon greater parental surveillance of increasingly organised forms of childhood physical activity at the expense of spontaneous play. Future physical activity policy should be sensitive to the social climate in which recommendations for children are made, as this places expectations upon parents due to how childhood is currently understood within neoliberal contexts. The influence of large‐scale variables such as climate change on phenology has received a great deal of research attention. However, local environmental factors also play a key role in determining the timing of species life cycles. Using the meadow brown butterfly Maniola jurtina as an example, we investigate how a specific habitat type, lowland calcareous grassland, can affect the timing of flight dates. Although protracted flight periods have previously been reported in populations on chalk grassland sites in the south of England, no attempt has yet been made to quantify this at a national level, or to assess links with population genetics and drought tolerance. Using data from 539 sites across the UK, these differences in phenology are quantified, and M. jurtina phenology is found to be strongly associated with both site geology and topography, independent of levels of abundance. Further investigation into aspects of M. jurtina ecology at a subset of sites finds no genetic structuring or drought tolerance associated with these same site conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding how environmental change affects ecosystem function delivery is of primary importance for fundamental and applied ecology. Current approaches focus on single environmental driver effects on communities, mediated by individual response traits. Data limitations present constraints in scaling up this approach to predict the impacts of multivariate environmental change on ecosystem functioning. We present a more holistic approach to determine ecosystem function resilience, using long‐term monitoring data to analyze the aggregate impact of multiple historic environmental drivers on species' population dynamics. By assessing covariation in population dynamics between pairs of species, we identify which species respond most synchronously to environmental change and allocate species into "response guilds." We then use "production functions" combining trait data to estimate the relative roles of species to ecosystem functions. We quantify the correlation between response guilds and production functions, assessing the resilience of ecosystem functioning to environmental change, with asynchronous dynamics of species in the same functional guild expected to lead to more stable ecosystem functioning. Testing this method using data for butterflies collected over four decades in the United Kingdom, we find three ecosystem functions (resource provisioning, wildflower pollination, and aesthetic cultural value) appear relatively robust, with functionally important species dispersed across response guilds, suggesting more stable ecosystem functioning. Additionally, by relating genetic distances to response guilds we assess the heritability of responses to environmental change. Our results suggest it may be feasible to infer population responses of butterflies to environmental change based on phylogeny—a useful insight for conservation management of rare species with limited population monitoring data. Our approach holds promise for overcoming the impasse in predicting the responses of ecosystem functions to environmental change. Quantifying co‐varying species' responses to multivariate environmental change should enable us to significantly advance our predictions of ecosystem function resilience and enable proactive ecosystem management. We assessed whether the sex ratio of nestling Marsh Tits (Poecile palustris) varied with habitat fragmentation by sampling broods from two British woodland areas with contrasting patch size, and comparing the data with published results from an extensive forest in Poland. We found no evidence for manipulation of offspring sex ratios, supporting findings from Poland, and suggesting that this trait may be typical of the species. The results are important in helping to understand the origin of biased sex ratios observed among adult Marsh Tits in the declining population in Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In northwest and western Europe the blackfly subgenus Eusimulium (Diptera: Simuliidae: Simulium) is represented by four species of which three are widely distributed and one, Simulium petricolum, was previously thought to be largely restricted to the Mediterranean region. Simulium petricolum is reported from southern England, and is shown to be distinct from the other Eusimulium species in terms of mitochondrial DNA sequence (COI DNA barcode), but morphologically and cytotaxonomically indistinguishable from Mediterranean S. petricolum, with the exception of minor differences in larval pigmentation. Simulium petricolum shows a distinctive ecology in Britain and is probably much more widely distributed in Europe than is currently appreciated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Routine recall for reassessment of adult hearing-aid users has been recommended by national audiology standards in the United Kingdom. The objective of this study was to determine whether recalling patients after three years was appropriate within a publicly-funded health service model, by investigating changes in hearing thresholds, and problems presented by adult hearing-aid users at reassessment appointments. Patients who had not had contact (except for the repair service) with the department for three years or more were invited to participate in the pilot reassessment programme, and 62% attended (total of 95 subjects). The reassessment appointment was found to be clearly appropriate for 58% of subjects seen, using our defined criteria. 100% of subjects were also found to need minor interventions. It is suggested that recall for reassessment after three years was generally appropriate for this patient group whose needs were not adequately met by self-referral and repair services. Some evidence was also found that subjects who have not accessed open repair clinics might be suitable for targeting for reassessment appointments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many lowland heathlands have been designated as Special Protection Areas under the European Union Birds Directive as they support populations of bird species of European importance listed in Annex I of the Directive, including Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus, Woodlark Lullula arborea and Dartford Warbler Sylvia undata. Many lowland heaths are near to human settlements and are heavily used as open spaces by those living nearby. A number of past visitor surveys have established the range of uses to which urban heaths are subject, and the attitudes of those who use them. We have collated a number of these visitor surveys, many of which are unpublished reports relating to single sites, in order to provide a broad summary of access to heathlands. The majority of visitors to urban and suburban lowland heaths visit sites regularly and live nearby (within 5 km). A large proportion of visitors drive to sites and dog walking is the usual purpose for a visit. Visits are typically short, with the average dog walker travelling less than 2.5 km on the heath. Dog walkers typically stay on the paths, but most let their dog off the lead and consider it important to be able to do so. On large regionally or nationally known rural sites such as the New Forest, more visitors are day trippers and tourists, fewer are dog walkers, they stay for longer and their reasons for visiting differ from those of local residents. The information presented here is relevant in helping to inform decisions on the location of new housing development, and mitigating the impacts of existing and new settlements, as well as helping the heathland manager to make provision for visitors in ways that are most compatible with wildlife conservation.
