Abstract

A speech given by naval historian N. A. M. Rodger on the pitfalls of historical analogy, or using history to predict future events, at the International Seapower Symposium on October 20, 2011, is presented. Historical events discussed by Rodger include the Concert of Europe following the Napoleonic Wars and 19th-century British trade. He believes that a comparison of the early 21st century and the 19th century is apt and demonstrates the possibility for a large war.
