Background: The WHO classified the mpox outbreak as a worldwide health emergency. Increasing the contribution of healthcare providers, such as pharmacists, can enhance preventive efforts. Assessing the knowledge and confidence levels of pharmacists in diagnosing and managing mpox cases can shape the response strategies necessary for the management of such outbreaks. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional survey designed to assess the knowledge and preparedness of pharmacy students and pharmacists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding the mpox virus outbreak. Independent researchers evaluated the survey items to confirm the face and content validity of the developed survey. The final study's survey was structured into three distinct sections, each addressing a specific area of interest. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics. Results: The 388 participants had a median age of 22.00 years (IQR = 5.00). The survey revealed that participants primarily relied on the WHO reports for mpox information (79.8%). The total knowledge scores (TK score) varied, ranging from −6 to 23 (median = 6.00), and symptom knowledge scores (SK score) ranged from −3 to 9 (median = 2.00). Older participants (p-value = 0.008) and females (p-value = 0.014) exhibited significantly higher TK scores. Only about 31.0% of participants expressed confidence in diagnosing mpox cases, and 34.6% expressed confidence in managing mpox cases. Nearly a quarter of the participants (24.5%) thought that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 led to contracting mpox more likely, whereas 45.7% believed that a previous infection with COVID-19 increases the risk of having mpox and its associated symptoms. Many respondents (38.7%) expressed their concern that mpox could emerge as the next major epidemic following COVID-19. Conclusion: Although pharmacists and pharmacy students in the UAE are aware of mpox, their knowledge and confidence levels in diagnosing and managing vary significantly. Patients infected with coronavirus have new experiences and hence new needs from the healthcare sector. Acknowledging patients' experiences can exhibit promising outcomes in coronavirus management. Pharmacists are considered a vital pillar in managing patients' experiences during their infection. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the experiences of COVID-19-infected individuals and the roles of pharmacists in the United Arab Emirates. The survey was face- and content-validated after being developed. Three sections were included in the survey (demographics, experiences of infected individuals, and the roles of pharmacists). Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The study participants (n = 509) had a mean age of 34.50 (SD = 11.93). The most reported symptoms among participants were fatigue (81.5%), fever (76.8%), headache (76.6%), dry cough (74.1%), muscle or joint pain (70.7%), and sore throat (68.6%). Vitamin C was the most used supplement (88.6%), followed by pain relievers (78.2%). Female gender was the only factor associated with symptom severity. About 79.0% agreed that the pharmacist played an important and effective role during their infection. The most reported symptom was fatigue, with females reporting more severe symptoms. Background: Inhaled drug delivery has been hailed as a major advancement in respiratory therapeutics. However, a major limitation to use the inhaled medications effectively is the inability of patients and nurses to use and demonstrate the proper use of these devices correctly. Being the drug experts, pharmacists are in a pivotal position to delivered tailored education to their peers, the nurses. Aim: This study aims to examine nurses' knowledge of asthma management, their ability to demonstrate proper inhaler technique, and the impact of a specialized workshop training program delivered by skilled pharmacists on improving their performance. Methods: This is a pre- and post-cross-sectional study design in hospital setting where nurses were recruited from the respiratory and emergency departments within a healthcare facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The nurses attended a training workshop prepared and delivered by skilled pharmacists on inhaler technique demonstration skills. Nurses' inhaler technique demonstration skills for Diskus, Turbuhaler, and pMDI were assessed at baseline, immediately after the workshop, and after four weeks. The nurses completed the demographic and Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire (AKQ). Results: A random convenience sample of registered nurses (n=20) from the respiratory and emergency departments was recruited from a tertiary hospital in Sharjah, UAE, with a mean age of 35.25 (SD=6.96) years, of whom 90% were females. The mean number of years of experience was 12.00 years (SD=5.81). Inhaler technique assessment revealed low inhaler technique scores for all the three study inhalers at baseline (mean score for Diskus=3.85 (SD=2.87); Turbuhaler=3.70 (SD=3.20); pMDI=4.50 (SD=2.65)) Significant improvements in inhaler technique scores were noted after the workshop (Diskus=8.9 (SD=0.31); Turbuhaler=8.9 (SD=0.31); pMDI=8.0 (SD=0.00), P<0.001). A significant difference in AKQ scores was found before (mean=4.85 (SD=1.27)) and after (mean=7.50 (SD=0.95)) the workshop training session (P<0.001), and four weeks after the workshop training session (mean=7.55 (SD=0.76), P<0.001). Conclusion: The UAE nurses' inhaler technique and AKQ scores were suboptimal at baseline. The specialized training program prepared and delivered by the skilled pharmacists improved nurses' inhaler technique demonstration skills and AKQ scores. Background: With the outbreak of Coronavirus infection (COVID-19), pharmacists play an important role in supporting local health during this emergency. Aim: To assess the knowledge and to identify information sources regarding COVID-19 used by pharmacists, to investigate the active and public perceived roles of pharmacists, to explore the role of the pharmacy facilities and health authorities, and to identify barriers that would hinder pharmacists from performing their duties optimally in the United Arab Emirates. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional online study was conducted in the UAE during the COVID-19 outbreak, from 18 May to 20 June 2020. A validated online questionnaire addressing participants' current knowledge about pandemics and COVID-19, source of information, and their perspectives of their role was used. Participants were licensed pharmacists practising in community and hospital pharmacies in UAE, academics, and pharmacy students. Results: Almost two-thirds of the participants (71.2%) were aged 18–30 years, with 76.2% females. Only 57.5% of participants believed that they got enough education about pandemics, and 88.3% of them followed on the latest coronavirus updates regarding treatments, and that is mainly from the World Health Organization reports (53.9%), followed by health authorities (44.8%). Two-thirds of participants (69.7%) had good/very good current knowledge regarding COVID-19. Knowledge of pharmacy students compared to pharmacists was significantly higher (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The majority of pharmacists and pharmacy students reported that they have a major role in managing pandemics executed through the community pharmacies and that it is their role to ensure the availability of key medications. Objectives To explore types and frequencies of treatment-related problems (TRPs) amongst outpatients with chronic diseases recruited through community pharmacies and clinics in the UAE via conducting the medication management review (MMR) service. Methods This observational study was conducted over three months in 2013 in the UAE. Ethical approval was obtained, and patients were recruited randomly by two pharmacists from different outpatient settings. Patient interview was conducted at the community pharmacy or clinic to collect demographic data, followed by a visit to the patient's home to collect the medical data. TRPs for each patient were identified by the clinical pharmacist. Key findings A total of 125 patients (mean age: 52.40 ± 12.60) completed the study. More than half of the patients (57%) were classified overweight (BMI > 24.90 kg/m2), and many (22%) were smokers. Mean number of medical conditions was 2.77 ± 1.44; mean number of medications taken was 3.12 ± 1.29. Most prevalent diseases included diabetes mellitus (24%), hypertension (21%), coronary artery disease (11%) and asthma (9%). Mean number of identified TRPs was 1.76 ± 1.44 per patient. The most common TRP categories were inappropriate adherence (68.5%), inappropriate dosage regimen (35.4%), untreated conditions (29.2%) and ineffective/incomplete drug therapy (26.2%). Conclusions Prevalence of TRPs among outpatients living in the UAE is a concern that needs addressing. None adherence is a major TRP amongst patients with chronic conditions. Background: Prevalence of asthma in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is high, and training patients on correct inhaler technique is vital. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of inhaler technique labels incorporating the individual technique steps in image format on the retention of correct inhaler technique for patients with asthma living in the UAE and following inhaler training; secondly to investigate the effect of inhaler technique education using self-check pictorial labels on patients' overall asthma control. Methods: This single-blinded randomized controlled study was conducted in 2019 and followed consecutive recruitment of asthma patients visiting respiratory clinics at Rashid Hospital in Dubai. Patients were using a controller inhaler (Turbuhaler (TH), Accuhaler (ACC), or pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI)). Following recruitment, patients were randomized into active group receiving educational intervention plus the inhaler label, and control group receiving educational intervention without the label. Patients were assessed at baseline and at one-month on their inhaler technique and asthma control. Results: Participants (n = 245; 93 = TH, 70 = ACC, 82 = pMDI) showed a significant difference between the groups at one-month for inhaler technique scores for TH (active 5.29 ± 1.86 vs. control = 24.4 ± 21.28), ACC (active = 3.99 ± 1.43 vs. control = 25.45 ± 22.57), and pMDI (active = 4.59 ± 0.10 vs. control = 120.55 ± 17.2), p < 0.001 for all. Asthma control for active group indicated significant improvements compared to control for TH and pMDI (p < 0.001 for both), but not ACC group (p = 0.087). Purpose: To explore healthcare providers' (HCPs) and medical students' attitudes to, and perceptions of the pharmaceutical services that clinical pharmacists can provide in United Arab Emirates. Methods: A total of 535 participants (265 HCPs and 270 medical students) were asked to complete a questionnaire over a period of three months (January through March 2009). Results: Almost three quarters of the students perceived that the clinical pharmacist is an important part of the healthcare team while 82% believed that clinical pharmacists can help improve the quality of medical care in hospitals. Eighty one percent of medical students expressed confidence in the ability of clinical pharmacists to minimize medication errors. Although slightly more than half of the respondents (53%) reported that they did not have clinical pharmacy services in their institutions, there was substantial willingness among physicians and nurses to cooperate with clinical pharmacists. The majority of physicians (92%) and nurses (87%) expressed the view that the clinical pharmacist is an important integral part of the healthcare team. Conclusion: The HCPs and medical students in the study setting valued the role of clinical pharmacists in healthcare delivery. However, new developments in pharmacy services in the UAE hospital setting is recommended for adoption in hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
