Abstract

The Ohio Entrepreneurs Survey was conducted during the winter of 1988 to learn more about the vocational background of Ohio's business owners. A secondary purpose was to identify the opinions the business owners held about high school vocational graduates and their abilities as entry-level employees. The four-page questionnaire was completed by 9,100 business owners. Survey respondents were mostly male, predominantly white, and mainly middle-aged. Two out of three started their businesses before age 35 and generally in an urban setting. Business owners with a vocational education background, especially high school vocational education, were generally younger, started their businesses at significantly earlier ages, and were more evenly dispersed between urban and rural settings. Ohio business owners reported considerable involvement with vocational education. The percentage of Ohio business owners with some vocational education was nearly three times the national percentage. Those respondents having high school education started their businesses at substantially earlier ages, reported higher than expected levels of education, and were more likely to operate in a rural setting. Ohio business owners generally held high school vocational graduates in high regard. Implications for future curriculum and program development for vocational education were suggested. (YLB)

Abstract

This publication contains a synthesis of information collected by the National Entrepreneurship Education Consortium on the efforts of local vocational education programs in the area of entrepreneurship education. The programs described represent all instructional levels and all areas of the country. A directory of programs listed by state is provided. This is followed by a directory that lists programs in accordance with the five stages of the National Center for Research in Vocational Education's lifelong entrepreneurship model, i.e., programs focusing on basic skills, competency awareness, creative applications, start-up, and growth. Also included in this directory is a brief section on pertinent teacher education programs. A set of program abstracts constitutes the next sections; 103 programs in 20 states and 2 foreign countries (Jamaica and Canada) are presented. Each abstract contains information on the organization sponsoring the program, a contact person, and a description of the program's goals and curriculum. A 13-page section on curriculum and resources used covers the following materials: books and texts, curriculum guides, publications, films and videotapes, computers, transparencies, and programs. Twelve 1987 and eighteen 1988 state leadership activity reports are included. The entrepreneurship program questionnaire used to collect the data in this guide has also been provided. (MN)

4. Entrepreneurship as a Career Choice.

Abstract

This curriculum guide is designed to provide some basic materials to assist in developing an introductory approach to entrepreneurship as a career option. Chapter 1 presents an overview of entrepreneurship education and possible teaching strategies, including a topical outline, resource suggestions, detailed descriptions of available curriculum materials, and a list of ideas that are helpful in planning infusion of entrepreneurship education into a vocational curriculum. Chapters 2 through 5 provide learning activities designed as handouts for easy duplication in the classroom. They provide a variety of learning experiences related to becoming an entrepreneur in these areas: Can I be an entrepreneur?, What experiences have I had?, What type of business could I start?, and How can I prepare to be my own boss? Chapter 6 (more than half of the document) contains the stories of 50 young vocational education graduates who started a business of their own. They are grouped to correspond to the four areas of chapters 2-5. Each case study provides name of entrepreneur; business name, address, and phone; type of business; a narrative description; and case study questions and answers. (YLB)
