1. Proposal for the New Language Media Laboratory in Clemens Hall, Amherst Campus.

Abstract

The language media laboratory described in this proposal is intended to provide for the implementation of broader instructional objectives than language laboratories of previous years, including the dial access type. The proposal is divided into three main sections: (1) program rationale; (2) programs and services; and (3) design of the language media laboratory. The first section compares the dial access and the language media laboratories, with emphasis on the opportunity the latter offers for development of communication skills. The second part treats the function of the language media laboratory, the use of space, curriculum development, tests and tapes, testing, films, cassettes, and shortwave radio. Part three presents the proposed design of the laboratory including descriptions of the classrooms, studios, and libraries. Included in the appendices are documents representing research, department requirements and recommendations, program descriptions, a resource reference guide, and floor plans for the language media laboratory. Abstract

Rapidly changing social, economic, and political conditions, declining enrollments, fiscal restraints, and decline in teacher turnover are factors that affect curriculum development. Staff development may be considered the most important instrument available for providing educational personnel with the skills and knowledge necessary to adjust to the accelerating demands for change. A review of pertinent literature leads to the conclusion that inservice education might address itself to providing teachers and supervisors with skills for assessing and solving problems. This essay identifies the steps, strategies, and questions needed "to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things." Practical suggestions on how to accomplish change include a discussion of curriculum change models, characteristics contributing to successful diffusion of innovations, the change agents, and the development of an overall plan for chanqe. Staff development strategies can be adapted from various models or programs. Each of these involve the interrelationship of school personnel, students, parents and other community members. Finally, questions on beliefs, attitudes, and values and a personal assessment inventory for teachers may facilitate change. (AMH)

3. A Global Perspective and Second Language Study - An Action Plan.

Abstract

Strategies for integrating second language instruction with a global perspective are described. The first strategy is a framework of skills for global interaction that teachers can apply to selecting instructional materials and setting educational goals. According to this framework, the goals of education for a global perspective include decreasing ethnocentric and stereotypic perceptions and developing constructive attitudes toward diversity and change. The second strategy is to organize lessons and materials around cultural universals related to material culture, the arts, recreation, language, social organization, social control, economic organization, and world view. Such organization promotes those elements of society which unite humanity. Teachers should establish files for the collection of potential classroom materials about cultural universals. The third strategy is to plan lessons around conceptual themes such as nationalism or interdependence. (RW)
