Based on the view that children have special needs that must be recognized and attended to by the adults who care for them, this book explores the stressful experiences faced by children on a daily basis and presents advice and techniques for protecting children during those challenging experiences. Part 1 of the book focuses on children's experiences with and perceptions of stress, and Part 2 looks at professionals who work with children. The book's prologue, "The Undefeated: Lessons from Autobiographical Accounts" (Marilyn M. Maxson), reminds teachers of the hope that they will enhance students' individual dignity and worth and allow them to make their own contributions to humankind. The introduction then notes that although many stressful experiences are shared with others, the coping and healing will be individual and that the task of nurturance and guidance rests with adults. The chapters are: (1) "Stress: The View from the Inside" (Kaoru Yamamoto); (2) "The Impact of Family Stress upon School-Age Children" (Beth M. Mahlios); (6) "Mediating Stress: Personal Growth for Student Teachers" (Gail McEachron); (7) "Experienced Teachers: Seeing Children Whole" (Beverly Hardcastle Stanford); and (8) "From the Therapy Room" (Sherry Lawry Young). The book's epilogue reminds professionals working with children of the fundamental requirements for children's healthy development and that they have a powerful ally in the almost limitless sense of trust and hope that young children bring to the world.
