Remote sensing products are typically assessed using a single accuracy estimate for the entire map, despite significant variations in accuracy across different map areas or classes. Estimating per-pixel uncertainty is a major challenge for enhancing the usability and potential of remote sensing products. This paper introduces the dataDriven open access tool, a novel statistical design-based approach that specifically addresses this issue by estimating per-pixel uncertainty through a bootstrap resampling procedure. Leveraging Sentinel-2 remote sensing data as auxiliary information, the capabilities of the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform, and the R programming language, dataDriven can be applied in any world region and variables of interest. In this study, the dataDriven tool was tested in the Rincine forest estate study area—eastern Tuscany, Italy—focusing on volume density as the variable of interest. The average volume density was 0.042, corresponding to 420 m3 per hectare. The estimated pixel errors ranged between 93 m3 and 979 m3 per hectare and were 285 m3 per hectare on average. The ability to produce error estimates for each pixel in the map is a novel aspect in the context of the current advances in remote sensing and forest monitoring and assessment. It constitutes a significant support in forest management applications and also a powerful communication tool since it informs users about areas where map estimates are unreliable, at the same time highlighting the areas where the information provided via the map is more trustworthy. Although estimating forest disturbance area is essential in the context of carbon cycle assessments and for strategic forest planning projects, official statistics are currently not available in several countries. Remotely sensed data are an efficient source of auxiliary information for meeting these needs, and multiple algorithms are commonly used worldwide for this purpose. However, both more accurate maps and precise area estimates are strongly required, especially in Mediterranean ecosystems, and scientific research in this topic area is anything but concluded. In this study, we present the new Three Indices Three Dimensions (3I3D) algorithm for the automated prediction of forest disturbances using statistical analyses of Sentinel-2 data. We tested 3I3D in Tuscany, Italy, for the year 2016, and we compared the results to those obtained using the Global Forest Change Map (GFC), LandTrendr (LT), and the Two Thresholds Method (TTM). The 3I3D map was the most accurate (omissions = 27%, commissions = 30%) followed by TTM (omissions = 35%, commissions = 39%), LT (omissions = 41%, commissions = 43%) and lastly GFC with slightly fewer omissions than LT (39%) but with many more commissions (69%). We also presented a probability sampling framework to estimate the forest harvested area using a model-assisted estimator that can be used at an operational level to produce large-scale statistics. 3I3D and TTM produced the smallest standard errors of the area estimates (8%) followed by LT (13%) and GFC (17%). Forests play a prominent role in the battle against climate change, as they absorb a relevant part of human carbon emissions. However, precisely because of climate change, forest disturbances are expected to increase and alter forests' capacity to absorb carbon. In this context, forest monitoring using all available sources of information is crucial. We combined optical (Landsat) and photonic (GEDI) data to monitor four decades (1985–2019) of disturbances in Italian forests (11 Mha). Landsat data were confirmed as a relevant source of information for forest disturbance mapping, as forest harvestings in Tuscany were predicted with omission errors estimated between 29% (in 2012) and 65% (in 2001). GEDI was assessed using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data available for about 6 Mha of Italian forests. A good correlation (r2 = 0.75) between Above Ground Biomass Density GEDI estimates (AGBD) and canopy height ALS estimates was reported. GEDI data provided complementary information to Landsat. The Landsat mission is capable of mapping disturbances, but not retrieving the three-dimensional structure of forests, while our results indicate that GEDI is capable of capturing forest biomass changes due to disturbances. GEDI acquires useful information not only for biomass trend quantification in disturbance regimes but also for forest disturbance discrimination and characterization, which is crucial to further understanding the effect of climate change on forest ecosystems. Monitoring of tree traits and tree response to the environment can be integrated with sensor technology. High-resolution monitoring requires a frequent data acquisition, that generally results in hourly measurements for the definition of daily processes, then scaled at monthly, seasonal and annual levels, by producing very large databases. The TreeTalker (TT) technology is an example of a tool for forest monitoring that measures hourly and simultaneously tree parameters and environmental variables, by collecting 1032 attributes per tree per day (43 variables, such as sap flow and stem diameter variation measured every hour). Therefore, we present the TreeTalkersCheck R package built to facilitate the remote checking of the functioning of the TreeTalkers devices. This package contains functions to download, process raw data obtained with TreeTalker devices, and produces a report with all the alerts detected and a complete database with preliminary processing of the data. The package was tested on a database obtained by 60 TT installed on 60 trees in three sites in Tuscany (Central Italy). A Landsat time series has been recognized as a viable source of information for monitoring and assessing forest disturbances and for continuous reporting on forest dynamics. This study focused on developing automated procedures for detecting disturbances in Mediterranean coppice forests which are characterized by rapid regrowth after a cut. Specifically, new methods specific to Mediterranean coppice forests are needed for mapping clearcut disturbances over time and for estimating related indicators in the context of Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity International monitoring frameworks. The aim of this work was to develop a new change detection algorithm for mapping clearcut disturbances in Mediterranean coppice forests with Landsat time series (LTS) using a short time window. Accuracy for the new algorithm, characterized as the Two Thresholds Method (TTM), was evaluated using an independent clearcut reference dataset over a temporal period of the 13 years between 2001 and 2013. TTM was also evaluated against two benchmark approaches: (i) LandTrendr, and (ii) the forest loss category of the Global Forest Change Map. Overall Accuracy for LandTrendr and TTM were greater than 0.94. Meanwhile, smaller accuracies were always obtained for the GFC. In particular, Producer's Accuracy ranged between 0.45 and 0.84 for TTM and between 0.49 and 0.83 for LT, while for the GFC, PA ranged between 0 and 0.38. User's Accuracy ranged between 0.86 and 0.96 for TTM and between 0.73 and 0.91 for LT, while for the GFC UA ranged between 0.19 and 1.00. Moreover, to illustrate the utility of TTM for mapping clearcut disturbances in Mediterranean coppice forests, we applied TTM to a Landsat scene that covered almost the entirety of the Tuscany region in Italy.
