Objective: More and more children experience sleep problems, which are believed to be exacerbated by the Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and digital screen exposure. This descriptive and cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between sleep problems and digital screen exposure and temperament in children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 122 parents of children aged 3-6 years. Data were collected using a descriptive characteristics questionnaire, the children's sleep habits questionnaire, and the short temperament scale for children. Results: Most children have been watching more TV (77.9%) and spending more time on computers/tablets/smartphones (89.3%) since the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a relationship between screen time and sleep duration (<0.05), sleep anxiety (<0.05), daytime sleepiness (<0.05), and total sleep score (<0.05). Conclusion: There is also a relationship between sleep problems and digital screen exposure and temperament during the COVID-19 pandemic. Policymakers and educators should take measures to promote children's health and education during the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GAMES , *PRESCHOOL teachers , *RAPID prototyping , *STUDENT teachers , *WEB-based user interfaces , *PRESCHOOL children - Abstract
This study aimed to enable pre-school teacher candidates to identify traditional children's games in Turkey with their research skills. The study sought to create a national digital atlas of children's games that can transfer culture for social studies and Turkish education lessons in this framework. In this context, the web mapping application named Seyyah (İneç, 2012), developed according to the ADDIE instructional design model was modified following the Rapid Prototyping Instructional Design Model (tRPidm). Seyyah was transformed into a geo-media-based digital atlas of Turkey, where multimedia elements can be configured and shared. Following tRPidm, content analyses were conducted in the first stage, and a prototype design was created with the algorithm created on the findings obtained in the second stage. In the next step, the working condition of the prototype was tested. In the final stage of tRPidm, action research was conducted for the study. The study was carried out in the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year, and fifty-eight pre-school undergraduate students selected according to the maximum variation sampling participated in the study. The students transformed the data they obtained with their research skills into multimedia by constructing them with the creative drama method and uploaded the content to the Seyyah. The uploads made according to the cities were evaluated, and the data was subjected to descriptive and content analysis. Findings showed that traditional children's games mainly address sociaI and emotional development. The games were mostly compiIed from students' peers and the Eastern Anatolia Region, and the games were played with six people with natural objects, during the daytime and in open areas. Some implications were provided based on the study findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EARLY childhood education , *MIXED methods research , *QUANTITATIVE research , *QUALITATIVE research , *RESEARCH methodology - Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the researches on the Montessori method in the field of early childhood education in Turkey and to analyze the studies conducted until April 2020, without any starting date limitation, according to the study group, the pattern, the year of publication, the data collection tools used, the purposes and the subjects studied. 22 articles were analyzed within the scope of the research. There are 15 articles using quantitative research method, 6 articles using qualitative research method and 1 article using mixed research method in the analyzed studies. The samples of the studies were grouped under four headings as child, teacher, teacher candidate and family. It was observed that 16 out of 22 articles examined in the study used a scale or test whose validity and reliability were made, an interview form in 5 studies and an observation report in one study. Most of the studies conducted as quantitative researches and the used scales have shown that the studies are result-oriented not process-oriented. In the study, it was observed that the studies on the Montessori approach were more in 2019 (n = 7) and 2016 (n = 6) compared to other years. Research results showed that researches focus more on visual perception and cognitive development. Studies can be made on all areas of child development rather than focusing on a few areas, and the Montessori approach applied in Turkey can be evaluated with a general view. It is expected that this research will contribute to the determination of the gaps in the field related to the Montessori method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCHOOL children , *SCIENCE education , *EDUCATION - Abstract
Pre-school science education is one of the most important educational processes that enables inquiry, problem-solving, exploring and commenting in children. With a qualified science education, children can develop their curiosity and appreciation for nature while becoming science literate. Furthermore, children who learn to transfer their knowledge of daily life also develop scientific process skills and problem-solving abilities. These competencies are acquired through pre-school education when the child actively participates in the process. The child solves and explains the complex activities surrounding him/her with the support of science activities he/she sees as a game in the science education process. Thus, it is recommended to gain an individual who has developed a sense of research and interpretation. In this study, the aim is to examine the Pre-School Education Program of the Ministry of National Education which is being taught in Turkish Republic of North Cyprus and Republic of Turkey with a specific focus on science activities. In the study, the activities in the program are examined in terms of number, subject, scope, achievement and applicability in accordance with qualitative research and document analysis. Additionally, alternative science activities have been proposed in parallel with the topics in the study. As a result, it has been determined that the number of science activities is kept low in both programs, the subjects which are important outcomes of contemporary life such as environment, animal, soil are not included in programs too much, and the activities are not able to respond to all of the determined achievements. PARENT-child relationships , *INTERPERSONAL relations , *FACTOR analysis , *STATISTICAL correlation - Abstract
Problem: Identifying the quality of mother-child relationship is important for the development of interaction. The studies carried out so far on mother-child relationship have focused mostly on infancy and particularly on the newborn. The number of studies related with further ages of childhood is limited. Given the available scales that identify the quality of parent-child interaction, it is observed that the scales in our country mainly aim to identify the attitudes of parents. Research Aim: It was decided to adapt the Child-Parent Relationship Scale (Pianta, 1992) in order to meet the need for a scale identifying the behaviors related with mutual relationship. The purpose of this study is to adapt into Turkish the scale that identifies mother-child relationship. Method: 234 mothers who have children in the age group of 4 to 6 took part in the adaptation process of the Child-Parent Relationship Scale. Factor analysis, Cronbach alpha and simple linear correlation were the techniques used for the analysis of data. As a result of the analysis, the value of factor loads was found to be .30 and the significance level for the interpretation of the statistical results was .01. Results: The Turkish version of the scale has two factors. The load values of items in the first factor range between .38 and. 72. The values are between .42 and .72 in the second factor. The testretest reliability coefficient of the scale is .98 (p<.01) for the dimension of conflict, .96 (p<.01) for the dimension of positive relationship and .85 for the total score. The internal consistency coefficients (cronbach alpha) of the scale are .85 for the dimension of conflict, .73 for the dimension of positive relationship and .73 for the total score. The Spearman Brown split half coefficients are .84, .73 and .72, respectively. The values found are at a sufficient level to prove the reliability of the scale. Discussion and Conclusions: It is believed that a scale that is reliable and valid enough to measure mother-child relationship will contribute to the field and pave the way for developing other scales in this field. According to the results of this study, it is suggested to conduct confirmatory factor analysis to provide further evidence for construct validity of the scale, and to test validity and reliability in samples of mother and father groups in further studies. EARLY childhood educators , *MALE teachers , *PRESCHOOL education , *EDUCATIONAL quality , *WORK environment , *SOCIAL conditions of teachers - Abstract
Preschool education is accepted as an important part of national education in many countries. Turkey is one of the countries in which preschool education including education of its staff is still in the process of developing. Since importance of the preschool education is not much understood fully, it is not developed as much as primary education in Turkey. Accordingly, teacher education programs are also not appeared well enough to educate preschool teachers. Quantity and quality of education and related teacher education programs in Turkey is still in the process of getting developed. The current interpretive study aims to examine and present the difficulties and problems 'male' teacher candidates face with and their perceptions of man being a preschool teacher. The study conducted in 2008-9 involved 11 male teacher candidates studying in the field of preschool education in Turkey. This interpretive study opted to utilize a qualitative data collection method, namely interview. The researchers are opted to examine problems experienced by male teacher candidates, because it is essential to understand the difficulties male preschool teacher candidates experience in the field in order to reach better quality preschool education and provide better education to young children. The results of the study showed that male teacher candidates complained about similar problems, such as not having many male friends in preschool teacher education programs at the university and the society accepting their job as women's job.
