The study investigates the intra-population and inter-population genetic variations of the domestic goose populations of Türkiye and the commercial Chinese - Embden cross genotypes using microsatellite markers. DNA samples were collected from 110 geese of four different populations. The populations' genetic diversity is assessed using the Ans02, Ans17, Ans25, Aalκ1b, Aph19b, and TTUCG5 microsatellite loci. The highest number of alleles were detected at the Ans25 (28) locus, while the Aph19b (14) locus had the lowest. Wright's F-statistics are calculated separately for each locus without discriminating against the populations. The FST value varied between 0.038 and 0.105 and had positive values in all loci. The number of migrants (Nm) ranged from 2.12 to 6.34. Structure and principal coordinates analysis indicated that the Native population had distinct characteristics from the other populations. The number of shared alleles among populations is accepted as an indicator of genetic erosion in native goose populations. Twenty four honey samples of eight distinct botanical origins obtained from different regions of Turkey were analyzed in this study. Various physicochemical (glucose and fructose content, color, diastase activity, electrical conductivity, optical rotation, moisture and proline content), biochemical (total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, FRAP antioxidant capacity and DPPH radical scavenging activity) and volatile analytical methods were used for floral authentication of the honeys. Identification of 103 volatile compounds from different chemical classes was carried out using SPME/GC/MS. The availability of physicochemical and volatile identification methods, instead of melissopalynology which is dependent on the researcher's ability and judgment regarding honey classification, was investigated. The results were statistically processed, and principal component analysis (PCA) was applied. The first two principal components explained 98.10% of the total variance, and the PCA produced eight different groups rhododendron, chestnut, lavandula, astragalus, chaste tree, polyfloral, oak, and pine honeys, each corresponding to a distinct botanical origin. Polyfloral honeys formed a cluster, although those samples were rather widespread. The studied honeys exhibited specific volatile compounds and biochemical properties which may be capable of use as floral markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Owing to its mysterious etiology, pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE) remains controversial. Here we aimed to compare the levels of an angiogenesis marker, split and hairy related protein-1 (SHARP1), in PE vs. normal pregnancy. Methods: Thirty-one patients with early-onset PE (EOPE), 26 patients with late-onset PE (LOPE), and 33 patients as a control group were recruited for this study in a tertiary referral center in Ankara, Turkey. Maternal venous SHARP1 levels and individual characteristics of the three groups were compared. Results: Age and body mass indices were similar among the three groups. SHARP1 levels in patients with PE (27.7 ± 13.2 ng/mL) were significantly lower than in the control group (34.7 ± 17 ng/mL) (P ± 0.006). Additionally, SHARP1 levels were significantly different among patients in EOPE, LOPE, and control groups (P ± 0.022). Birth weights and Apgar scores in patients in EOPE group were significantly lower than the other two groups and showed a gradual increase from the EOPE group to the LOPE and the control group. Binary logistic regression method demonstrated that maternal venous SHARP1 level was a risk factor for PE. Conclusions: Maternal venous SHARP1 levels in PE are lower than a normal pregnancy. Its clinical applicability and role as a candidate for making sense of the distinctive pathogenesis of the EOPE and LOPE remain to be elucidated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular DNA markers are valuable tools for analyzing genetic variation among yeast from different populations to reveal the genetically different autochthonous strains. In this study, we employed inter-primer binding site (iPBS) retrotransposon polymorphism to assess the genetic variation and population structure of 96 Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolates from four different regions in Turkey. The nine selected iPBS primers amplified 102 reproducible and scorable bands, of which 95.10% were polymorphic with an average of 10.78 polymorphic fragments per primer. The average polymorphism information content and the resolving power were 0.26-3.58, respectively. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed significant (P < 0.001) genetic differences within populations (88%) and between populations (12%). The unweighted pair group mean with arithmetic (UPGMA) dendrogram grouped 96 S. cerevisiae strains into two main clusters, where the highest probability of the data elucidating the population structure was obtained at ΔK = 2. There was not an obvious genetic discrimination of the populations according to geographical regions on UPGMA, supported by principal coordinate analysis. However, the individuals of the closer provinces in each population were more likely to group together or closely. The results indicate that iPBS polymorphism is a useful tool to reveal the genetically diverse autochthonous S. cerevisiae strains that may be important for the production of sourdough or baked goods., (© 2022. The inorganic component of hazelnuts was considered as a possible marker for geographical allocation and for the assessment of technological impact on their quality. The analyzed samples were Italian hazelnuts of the cultivar Tonda Gentile Romana and Turkish hazelnuts of the cultivars Tombul , Palaz and Çakildak . The hazelnuts were subjected to different drying procedures and different conservative methods. The concentration of 13 elements, namely Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Sn, Sr and Zn, were quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). All the samples were previously digested in a microwave oven. Before proceeding with the analysis of the samples, the whole procedure was optimized and tested on a certified reference material. The results show that the inorganic component: (i) can represent a fingerprint, able to identify the geographical origin of hazelnuts, becoming an important quality marker for consumer protection; (ii) is strongly influenced by the treatments undergone by the investigated product during all the processing stages. A pilot study was also carried out on hazelnuts of the cultivar Tonda Gentile Trilobata Piemontese , directly harvested from the plant during early development to maturity and analyzed to monitor the element concentration over time., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
