This descriptive qualitative study aimed to understand the feelings and thoughts experienced by 4th year midwifery students during the first birth they attended during clinical practice. Focus group interviews were conducted with 22 final year midwifery students in Istanbul, Türkiye December 2020. The transcribed data were analyzed by the descriptive qualitative analysis method. The students experienced not only negative feelings such as fear, torment, anxiety but also positive feelings such as hope, excitement, and curiosity during the first birth practice. The situations that caused negative feelings and thoughts were not only the feelings of the students but also the conditions that negatively affected the care provided to the patient in the clinic. The clinical practice environment affects the feelings and thoughts of midwifery students about the birth process. For this reason, improving the clinical practice environment and supporting students throughout the education process may contribute to the development of positive feelings and thoughts when attending as a student for their first birth suite placement. Objective:The study aims to examine the childbirth experiences of Syrian refugee mothers living in Turkey. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted with 12 mothers who had a vaginal birth and were assisted by midwives. The data were collected using an in-depth interview form and analyzed with the thematic analysis technique. Results: The childbirth experiences of the mothers were grouped under two main headings as negative and positive experiences. "Negative childbirth experiences" were divided into 4 main themes as "negative emotions experienced during childbirth, lack of effective communication due to the language barrier, difficulties experienced related to hospital policies and dissatisfaction with midwives". "Positive birth experiences", were categorized under three main themes as "satisfaction with the midwife, finding the country safe to give birth, and mother' s positive attitude towards birth process". The mothers were satisfied with "the attitudes and behaviors of the midwives and their professional practices", and the positive attitude of mothers towards birth in religious and cultural terms contributed to the positive birth perception. Conclusion: Refugee mothers were found to have both positive and negative childbirth experiences. Individualized, empathic communication-based, culturally sensitive and evidence-based care may contribute to the positive childbirth experiences of refugee women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A negative birth experience affects the woman's subsequent pregnancy, and delivery processes negatively, decreases patient satisfaction, and the high anxiety/stress experienced during pregnancy/delivery is transferred to the next generations by epigenetic transmission. In this study, women's birth experiences of Syrian refugees in Turkey aimed to describe in-depth. It was designed as a descriptive phenomenological qualitative study. Fifteen refugee women included in the sample gave birth in Turkey, living in Turkey's southern city. In-depth interviews were conducted with women. Six themes were formed in the results: "quantitatively enough but unsatisfactory service," "not providing autonomy," "think that she was neglected," "no respect to privacy," "feeling loneliness/fear in the delivery room," and "prejudice." The factors that negatively affect the pregnancy and birth experiences of Syrian refugee women are language/communication barriers, the provision of care services that are incompatible with their religious and cultural values, and their prejudice regarding discrimination. Background: Although primarily stemming from research conducted in high-income countries, culturally sensitive knowledge of women's experiences with and needs during childbirth, as well as how such experiences affect their psychological health and wellbeing, is important to add to the big picture of women's experiences with childbirth worldwide., Aim: The aim of the study was to clarify how primiparous women in Turkey experience childbirth and intrapartum care., Methods: Grounded theory guided depth-interviews with 12 women, whose data were analysed according to the constant comparative method., Findings: Participants reported wanting vaginal birth without interventions (i.e. normal birth), which required their empowerment as well as support from others. Although they recognised their readiness for the birth process as a decisive factor in coping with childbirth, they prioritised quality of care from healthcare professionals during birth, which most participants found unsatisfactory. They also highlighted the importance of giving birth in a health-promoting environment offering privacy, silence and comfort., Discussion: To support normal birth, the World Health Organization's intrapartum care model prioritises continuity of care, respectful labour and childbirth care, effective communication from healthcare personnel and emotional support from a companion of choice. Salutogenesis can also guide clinical birth practices to promote normal birth and positive birth experiences., Conclusion: All women strove to experience normal birth, which required antenatal education and emotional support from a partner or family and from healthcare professionals. Introduction: Approximately 21% of Germany's inhabitants have been born abroad or are of direct descent of immigrants. A positive birth experience has an effect on a woman's mental health and her future family planning choices. While international studies showed that immigrant women are less satisfied with their birth experience, no such study has been conducted in Germany until now., Methods: At our center of tertiary care in Berlin, with approximately 50% immigrants among patients, pregnant women of at least 18 years of age were offered participation in this study. A modified version of the Migrant Friendly Maternity Care Questionnaire (MFMCQ) designed by Gagnon et al. in German, English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish was used. We compared non-immigrant women to immigrant women and women with direct descent of immigrants. For certain analysis, the latter two groups were included together under the category "migration background"., Results: During the study period, 184 non-immigrant, 214 immigrant women and 62 direct descendants of immigrants were included. The most frequent countries of origin were Syria (19%), Turkey (17%), and Lebanon (9%). We found a slight difference between groups regarding age (non-immigrants: mean 33 years versus women with any migration background: mean 31) as well as parity with more non-immigrants delivering their first child. No difference in the satisfaction with care was observed between immigrant and any migration background groups (p ≥ 0.093 in the two-sided Fisher's exact test). At least 75.8% of all participating women reported complete satisfaction with care during labor, birth and after birth. Interestingly, the level of German language proficiency did not influence the immigrant patient's satisfaction with care., Conclusion: The study results show no difference regarding overall satisfaction with care during labor and birth despite a relevant language barrier. We are for the first time providing the MFMCQ in German and Turkish. Further future analyses on the impact of patient expectations on satisfaction with care will be conducted.

Aim: This definitive and cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the relation between mothers' types of labor, birth interventions, birth experiences and postpartum depression., Methods: A total of 1010 mothers who gave birth in four different provinces of Turkey were chosen to participate in the study via purposive sampling method Results: The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale score was determined to be 13 and over in 36.4% of the women. In this study, it was determined that the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale scores for women in the 18-24 age group who had a vaginal birth, did not have health insurance, experienced health problems during pregnancy and were not trained about type of labor during pregnancy were statistically higher. There was no significant correlation between the birth experiences and postpartum depression. The linear regression model showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between enema and amniotomy interventions practised during the birth and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale scores., Conclusion: In conclusion, it is thought that preparing the mothers for birth with birth preparation training in the antenatal period and imposing the necessary regulations in the delivery room for the mothers to have a positive birth experience are important in reducing postpartum depression risk., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
