In this study, two endemic species belonging to the genus Linum distributed in Türkiye were investigated. The outermost layer of the Linum flavum subsp. scabrinerve (P.H.Davis) P.H.Davis root, according to its cross-section, is covered with epidermis cells. In the stem cross-section, the vascular bundles are in the form of a continuous ring, upon which are sclerenchyma cells. The leaf mesophyll of the taxon is bifacial. The lower surface and the upper surfaces of the leaf have 88 and 51 stomata in order of. Leaf has a few glandular hairs. The root of Linum hirsutum subsp. pseudoanatolicum P.H. Davis has secondary growth. Periderm cells on the outside are oval or isodiametric in shape. In the stem cross-section, vascular bundles are in the form of a continuous ring. The cortex layer consists of 9-10 rows of oval or rectangular-shaped parenchymatous cells. The leaf mesophyll of the taxon is equifacial. The lower surface and the upper surfaces of the leaf have 48 and 46 stomata, respectively. No glandular or non-glandular hairs are found on the epidermis. As a result, an anatomic comparison of two different taxa belonging to the same genus was made with this study. According to the results, the root structures of the species, the presence of sclerenchyma on the stem, the size of the stomata of the leaf, mesophyll types, and the presence of glandular hairs are different from each other. Objectives: Morus alba L., Morus nigra L., and Morus rubra L. are widely cultivated in many countries due to their nutritive, economic, and medicinal value. In this study, comparative morphological and anatomical studies on three common Morus L. species found in Turkey were carried out. According to the results, differences regarding the morphological and anatomical features of these species were described, and the data were displayed in detailed photographs. Materials and Methods: Specimens collected from different provinces of Turkey were studied. In the anatomical studies, investigations were performed on transversal and superficial sections of the leaves. All sections were stained with chloral hydrate and Sartur solution and were then examined using an Olympus BH2 light microscope. Results: Significant diagnostic characteristics were found, such as trichome types, stomatal measurements, the stomatal index, and the density ratio of the parenchyma and collenchyma layers. Some morphological features of the leaves also showed prominent differences. Conclusion: Our results may contribute to the taxonomy of Morus species for future work and be helpful in species diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study includes on the taxonomic evaluation of morphological and anatomical features of seeds belonging to Iris taxa, which are I. suaveolens, I. sintenisii, I. foetidissima and I. germanica scattered in Turkey. Morphological features like dimension, shape, colour, and surface ornamentation types of seeds have studied by light and scanning electron microscopes. The structure and thicknesses of testa and parenchyma layers in seeds have examined anatomically. The obtained results show that the color, shape, testa structure and thickness of the seeds of the examined taxa are different in some respects. Furthermore, the surface ornamentations are somewhat diverse for the studied taxa at the interspecific level. As a result, it has been determined that the examined morphological and anatomical characteristics of the seeds show variations with some exceptions, and this situation has a taxonomic importance. T. minus L. is a complex species which has been divided into three varieties in Turkey. These are var. minus, var. majus (Crantz) Crepin and var. microphyllum Boiss. In this study, stem and leaf anatomial features of the varieties were described, compared and some differences have been determined in between the varieties. In transverse sections of stems; the shape of stems, presence or absence of trichomes, the number of vascular bundles and in leaf sections; the structure of the mesophyll and the shape of the epidermal cells were identified as possible differential characters. Salvia wiedemannii Boiss. (Lamiaceae) is an endemic plant of the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region. Morphological, anatomical and trichomes properties of the plant were examined in this study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to describe the micromorphology of trichomes. Two types of glandular trichome were found: peltate and capitate. Morphological properties of various organs of the plant such as stem, leaf and flower were described in detail. As a result, trichomes on stem, pinnatisect leaves, properties of calyx and corolla and type of stamens (A type) were found to be helpful to distinguish Salvia species. In anatomical studies, transverse sections of the stem and leaf were examined and supported by photographs. Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn. is represented by 2 subspecies in Turkey, namely subsp. incanum (Nábělek) Melderis and subsp. pectinatum (M. Bieb.) Tzvelev. This study examines the taxonomic significance of the leaf properties of the taxa of Agropyron Gaertn., comprising diagnostic anatomical features obtained from leaf transverse sections as well as leaf surface micromorphology. Results of the study show that most of the characters, such as the shape of the leaf blades; the size and number of stomata; the density, arrangement, and lengthof macro hairs; and the presence or absence of midrib and bulliform cells are different in the studied samples of Agropyron cristatum. The morphological and anatomical characteristics of Crocus reticulatus subsp. hittiticus and Crocus cancellatus subsp. lycius, which are under the danger of extinction, have been investigated. The distributions of the two endemic subspecies are limited in Turkey. The plant samples were collected from the South Anatolia Region. The subsp. hittiticus flowers in the early spring whereas subsp. lycius flowers in the autumn. Their corm tunics are coarsely reticulate-fibrous. The subsp. hittiticus has blackish anthers and purple striped outer segments. The subsp. lycius has flowers with very pale lilac coloured and veined. Also, the style of this subsp. is equal to their anthers. These morphological properties are characteristics for two the subspecies investigated. The transverse-sections of the root, stem and leaf parts of these subspecies have been examined and revealed. Their morphologic and anatomic structures are illustrated. The anatomic properties of the two subspecies have been determined to be similar to the anatomic properties of other species of the genus Crocus. The taxonomical status of Campanula tomentosa Lam. and C. vardariana Bocquet, belonging to the section Quinqueloculares (Boiss.) Phitos, which have important taxonomical problems, was reviewed in this study. Furthermore, morphological, anatomical leaf surface, and palynological features of these 2 species were examined in detail. Habit, shape of leaves, calyx, corolla, stamen, pistil, and seed micromorphological features as morphological characters; and pollen diameter, pore diameter, spinule length, and number, ornamentation, etc. as palynological characters, were examined and discussed. An identification key for the species is presented according to the results obtained. Following this extensive study, the mentioned problems of C. tomentosa and C. vardariana in the flora of Turkey were solved, and it was verified that they were 2 different species. In this study, relationships among the 15 taxa of the genus Crocus L. distributed in Turkey were analysed using 29 morphological and 4 anatomical characters. Analysis of the data set utilising maximum parsimony criterion with Branchand- Bound search algorithm yielded 32 most parsimonious trees. Bootstrap analysis with the majority rule consensus algorithm generated a consensus tree supporting some branches. Our data mostly did not agree with the previous sectional and serial treatments. The most interesting result was the condition of Crocus pallasii, which was previously included in the section Crocus. C. pallasii showed a sister group relationship with C. cancellatus from the section Nudiscapus series Reticulati in this work. Previously described sections Flavi and Reticulati did not show monophyly for their taxa based on our analysis (e.g., C. gargaricus and C. cancellatus of the section Reticulati were not monophyletic based on our data set). Interestingly, C. gargaricus of the section Reticulati was sister to the section Nudiscapus series Biflori members, specifically with C. leichtlinii. Sectional and serial treatment of C. fleischeri was consistent with our results. Our data suggest that more morphological data along with molecular data are needed for reliable conclusions on the studied taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sideritis L. (Lamiaceae) includes approximately 150 species of annual and perennial plants distributed mainly in the Mediterranean region. In Turkey, 44 species (55 taxa) are native. Three of these species (5 taxa) are annual and these taxa are included in Burgsdorfia and Hesiodia sections. This study was undertaken to investigate the morphological and anatomical properties of 5 annual taxa of Sideritis. Full descriptions and illustrations of these taxa are given, along with some additional information regarding their ecology and phytogeography. The aims of this article were to introduce a booklet entitled Harîta-i Vücûd-i Beşer (The Map of the Human Body), which was probably published in İstanbul around 1911-12, and to present its color anatomical pictures, transcriptions of its anatomical terms and a vocabulary containing Latin explanations of these anatomical terms. The booklet contained 12 color pages, with 16 color pictures in total. The pictures in the booklet were quoted from a Western country and the anatomical explanations were adapted to Ottoman Turkish. It would be difficult to describe this booklet as an atlas of anatomy; however, we may refer to it as an information booklet on the human body, which may be of particular interest to medical school students. In this study, comparative morphological, anatomical and palynological studies of Stachys L. sect. Ambleia Bentham species (Lamiaceae) in Turkey are carried out on the plants collected from their type localities. These species are Stachys cydni Kotschy ex Gemici & Leblebici and S. yildirimlii M. Dinç, which are highly local endemics. Morphologically, micromorphological features of the trichomes are studied. Trichome morphology appears to have a taxonomic value with respect to the results. The anatomical studies on cross-sections of stems, leaves, and surface sections of leaves are presented. According to the anatomical comparison between the 2 species, the pith structure of the stems, the cuticle thickness of the leaves, and stomatal distribution on the leaves are the distinguishing features of the species. Scanning electron microscope studies on the pollen grains show that exine ornamentation is clearly different in the 2 species. Whereas the pollen grains of S. yildirimlii have a retipilate exine ornamentation, those of S. cydni have a reticulate ornamentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, species of Thymus, growing in Eskisehir, have been anatomically investigated. Four Thymus species and altogether five taxa of which one is endemic were found to be native to the area. These are: T. sibthorpii Bentham, T. sipyleus Boiss., T. leucostomus Hausskn. & Velen. var. argillaceus Jalas and T. longicaulis C.Presl subsp. longicaulis var. subisophyllus (Borbas) Jalas, subsp. chaubardii (Boiss. & Heldr. ex Reichb. fil) Jalas var. chaubardii. T. leucostomus is an endemic species for Turkey. In anatomical studies, internal structures of herbaceus stems and leaves of each species have been investigated. In all species collenchyma is found on the corner of herbaceus stems. Xylem and phloem are continuous tissues, and leaves are dorsiventral and amphystomatic. In all species, there are a difference between the cell numbers of covering hairs of stems and leaves. Cross-section studies have shown that the leaf tissue of T. leucostomus var. argillaceus is at least two fold wider than that of other species. In addition, the V shape of leaves cross-section in T. sipyleus and the sinusoidal appearance of lower and upper epidermis of leaves in T. sibthorpii are the diverse characteristics of these species. Hymenocrater bituminosusFisch. & C.A.Mey. is the only species of the genus HymenocraterFisch. & C.A.Mey. in Turkey. In this study, the morphological features of the species, such as stem, leaf, flower, and nutlet, are described in detail. The morphological results were compared to the Flora of Turkey, Flora Iranica, and Flora of the USSR. As a result of this study, the description of this species has been expanded, contributing to the knowledge of the flora of Turkey. In anatomical studies, transverse sections of stems and leaves were examined and are supported by illustrations and photographs. Furthermore, trichomes in stems, leaves, and calyces were investigated. Anatomical characters of the species were observed to be similar to the usual features of Lamiaceae anatomy. In this study, Sonchus erzincanicusMatthews (Asteraceae) collected from Erzincan (Turkey) has been investigated by its leaf and stem anatomical features, pollen grain characteristics and ecological features. It is an endemic perennial herbs growing in slightly basic with low organic content soil. Stem cortex seen transparently is composed of parenchyma cells. The leaves are bifacial and have stomata cells that are anomocytic. The pollen type of the species is trizonocolporate.
