Bakırçay is one of the important rivers of Western Anatolia, Türkiye. The objectives of this study are (a) to determine the diversity of benthic invertebrates distributed in Bakırçay, (b) to evaluate the obtained data using various biological indices, (c) to determine the interactions of species with environmental variables, and (d) to estimate the water quality level of the river using BMWP and ASPT analyses. Samplings were carried out at 15 stations between October 2017 and July 2018, seasonally. A total of 11,897 specimens belonging to 136 benthic macroinvertebrate taxa were determined. Diptera and Oligochaeta were the dominant groups with 32 (24%) and 25 taxa (18%), respectively. Station 4 has the highest species richness with 49 taxa (36%). The highest individual number (3421) was at the 14th station. Tubifex tubifex and Physella acuta have the highest dominancy (25.76%) and frequency (51.67) values, respectively. Diversity (H') values of the stations fluctuated between 1.367 (st. 13) and 3.154 (st. 12). Similarity analysis showed that the 3rd and 11th stations have the highest similarity (> 90%), while the 14th station was an outgroup and has 28% similarity ratio. BMWP and ASPT scores gave similar results, and there was no 1st class water quality in the river. On the other hand, the results of the TR-BMWP score suggested that the 1st, 4th, and 6th stations had 1st class water quality. Although some stations are classified as "good conditions," the adverse effects of pollution were mainly observed in the main channel and downstream of the river. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted in a portion of the Tunca River within Turkey's borders. Its aim is to investigate possible differences in Oligochaeta colonization in different leaf packages and to determine the impact of leaf litter on the distribution of aquatic oligochaetes. Simultaneously, the reasons for differences in Oligochaeta species colonization were investigated, and it was concluded that these differences were linked to the mesohabitat structure. Three stations were selected on the river for the study. Leaves from five different trees in the vicinity of these stations were gathered, packaged, and thrown into the water. When packing leaves, a 20 kg sack of potatoes was used, and a total of 25 packs were placed in localities. In addition, Oligochaeta samples were collected between May and October 2012 using a hand net. A total of 79 samples were obtained in areas of six different mesohabitats: Platanus orientalis leaf litter, Ulmus leavis leaf litter, Morus alba leaf litter, Juglans regia leaf litter, Buxus sp. leaf litter, and hand net samples. In the mesohabitats sampled, 751 specimens were identified, among them of 17 taxa and nine genera belonging to the family Naididae. Principal components analysis revealed the first two axes explained 89.3% of the total variance of the data. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was associated with the J. regia leaf litter, and Psammoryctides albicola was associated with the P. orientalis leaf litter. Many large and small lakes of varying depths are present in the Eastern Black Sea Range of Turkey, the nation's third most important glacial region following the Ağğğrıand Cilo-Sat mountain ranges. During the present study, 6 expeditions to collect aquatic oligochaetes from these lakes were conducted in July and August of 2005, 2006, and 2007; qualitative and quantitative samples were collected from 59 glacial lakes. We present and analyze the dominancy and distribution of aquatic oligochaete assemblages and their relation to environmental factors (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, salinity, turbidity, PO4 -3-P, HCO3- , organic carbon, hardness, Ca2+, Mg2+, Si, water depth, and altitude) using classifi cation and ordination techniques. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to characterize the relationship between oligochaetes and the environmental variables. As a result, we determined the 4 most important environmental variables (elevation, water depth, dissolved oxygen, and temperature) aff ecting species distribution in general. Sampling localities were clustered into 8 groups with the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) based on physicochemical characteristics. The relationships between the total number of individuals and environmental measurements were determined by a simple analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The results of our analyses suggest a significant positive correlation between altitude (P < 0.05; F = 2.994) and the total number of individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two expeditions were carried out during July 1996 and July 1997 in order to determine the Oligochaeta fauna of 16 high altitude lakes located in the Taurus Mountains in south-west Anatolia (Turkey). No previous faunistic studies exist from the Taurus Mountains regarding physico-chemical features and Oligochaeta fauna. Fifteen species were identified, comprised of the families Tubificidae (11 species), Naididae (3 species), and Lumbriculidae (1 species). Among the samples, Tubificidae were the most dominant (73% of the specimens), followed by Naididae (20%) and Lumbriculidae (7%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim of identifying the oligochaeta fauna of Topçam Dam-Lake, located on the north-western slopes of the East Menteşe Mountains (Aegean region, Turkey), a number of samples were collected monthly between June 1999 and June 2000. Having no previous faunistic studies, some physico-chemical features and oligochaeta fauna of the dam-lake were determined for the first time in this research. Consequently, 11 species were determined, 9 species from Tubificidae, and 2 species from Naididae. Tubificid Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was the dominant Oligochaeta species and represented 64.64% of the total Oligochaeta community in the dam-lake. In order to determine the macrobenthic invertebrate fauna of Lake Egrigöl, located at 2000 m in the central Taurus Mountains, 4 field studies were conducted between June and September, 2000, and June and September, 2001. The specimens were obtained by collection of mud samples using an Ekman-Birge grab and by sifting with a fine 500 µm sieve, and were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. Additional samplings were also performed from the shore with hand nets with a mesh size of 180 µm. On average, 1036 benthic invertebrate specimens were found per square meter in Lake Egrigöl; 939 of these specimens were oligochaets, 95 were chironomid larvae and 2 were chaoborid larvae. With regard to the rational distribution of these groups, oligochaets were the predominant group with 90.64%, followed by chironomid larvae (9.17%) and chaoborid larvae (0.19%). With regard to the rational distribution of these groups by station, Station 4 (25.90%) was the richest and Station 3 (15.05%) the poorest. Since all, the mollusk specimens from the mud samples were already dead and their shells were decalcified, mollusk species are not included in the averages. Amphipod specimens were sampled from a spring just beyond the lake, and Decapoda specimens sampled from the shore are also not included in the averages. As a result of samplings performed from each meter from the shore to 9 m in depth in the first station, the maximum number of specimens was found at the seventh meter. It was also noticed that oligochaets were abundant at the seventh and eighth meters, whereas chironomids were abundant at the second and sixth meters. The abundances of the groups in respect of months were analyzed using the chi-square test and differences between distributions of the groups according to depths were analyzed using 2-way variance analysis. The specimens were collected from 16 stations between February 1998 and May 1999 with the aim of seasonally determining the Oligochaeta and Aphanoneura fauna of the Gediz Delta. The specimens obtained by collection of mud samples with an Ekman grab and elimination with a fine 500 µm sieve were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. A total of 47 species were determined, comprising 25 species from Tubificidae, 17 species from Naididae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae and 2 species from Aeolosomatidae.
