In painful operations like invasive procedures, it is aimed to analyze the effect of making the new-born listen to white noise CD by using the NIPS pain scale. This is a randomized control trial of research made on 60 new-borns, ranging from 0–28 day-old, 28 gestational weeks and over, and coming to the intensive care unit in Gaziantep Cengiz Gokcek Maternity and Children Hospital in Turkey. New-borns in the experimental group on invasive procedures were exposed to white noise CD. New-borns were recorded while they were listening to white noise during an invasive procedure. Then, the NIPS pain scale on the questionnaire form and efficiency of white noise have been evaluated by comparing the new-borns' duration of crying. New-borns' duration of crying has been found statistically significant in the Independent Samples T-test (p <.05) which was performed between two independent groups with a 95% confidence interval. Duration of crying in the group being exposed to white noise (18.20 sec) has been determined lower than that of the control group (44.96 sec). In the end, the use of white noise CD on new-born during the invasive procedure has been determined to be applicable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of white noise on anxiety levels and breastfeeding success of primipara mothers having vaginal delivery. Design: The research was conducted using a randomized controlled experimental design. Setting: The research was conducted at a public hospital located in western Turkey. Participants: Sixty primipara mothers, who were between 37 and 42 weeks of gestation, who had a vaginal delivery, and who gave birth to a healthy newborn weighing 2,500-4,000 g, were included in the study as participants. İnterventions: The mothers and their babies in the study group (30) were made to listen to white noise with a CD player during breastfeeding in the first hour after delivery and 24 hours after delivery. Measurements: Measurements were performed before, during, and after breastfeeding. A descriptive information form, the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Scale, and the "LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic and Evaluation Scale" were applied to the mothers by the researcher and the observer. In this way, breastfeeding success and anxiety levels were measured. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the study group listening to white noise and the control group in terms of the mean STAI-I, observation 2, and observation 4 scores ( p < 0.001). Also, it was found that the mean LATCH, observation 1, and observation 2 scores in the control group were significantly lower than the mean LATCH, observation 1, and observation 2 scores in the study group ( p < 0.001). Conclusions: As a result of the research, it was determined that white noise was an effective method in increasing breastfeeding success and reducing anxiety levels. In this direction, white noise can be used by health care professionals as a supportive method for breastfeeding.

This paper intends, on the example of Urla station, to explore unit root nonstationary behavior of daily mean SP time series driven by infinite variance α-stable white noise. The two complete daily mean SP time series datasets, each of two years long, derived from 10-min digital recordings at the two channels of Urla station are used. It is found that both time series data exhibit a first-order differencing (d = 1) and well can be described by an Autoregressive-Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA(2,1,0)) model. Numerical results of the Autoregressive unit root tests of Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests showed that the null hypothesis of a unit root in the SP time series cannot be rejected. This issue is further checked based upon the Modified Log-periodogram Regression (LPR) and Local Whittle (LW) estimators of the differencing parameter d. Non-stability of the SP data is assessed through four diagnostic checking procedures. Stability (or tail) indexes estimated using Nolan's Maximum Likelihood (ML) procedure were ranging around 1.12–1.13 for the first differences and 1.15–1.16 for the ARIMA(2,1,0) residuals. Numerical results of this study revealed that the SP time series observed at Urla station can be considered as realizations from an order-one integrated autoregressive process driven by nearly symmetrical, infinite variance (α-stable) white noise. It is recommended to take into account for these two crucial properties of the SP time series data in multivariate statistical models where the SP data will be used as a precursory covariate. Aims and objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of swinging and playing of white noise on the crying and sleeping durations of colicky babies. Background: Infantile colic (IC) is one of the most common reasons for doctor visits among babies younger than 3 months. One of five babies older than 3 months also experiences IC. IC, unlike gastrointestinal problems, is regarded as an individual differentiation and maturation of the central nervous system. Providing a warm bath, breastfeeding, swinging and playing of white noise are nonpharmacological methods. The efficiency of these methods has been proven by various studies independently of one another. Design: The study is a prospective, multicentre, paired randomised controlled trial. Methods: The study was conducted between April–December 2016. The study sample consisted of 40 1-month-old babies with gas pains who passed a hearing screening and their mothers. The total daily crying and sleeping durations of the babies were determined without any intervention on the first week. On the second week, 20 randomly selected babies (first group) were swung each time they cried, and on the third week, they were made to listen to white noise. The other 20 babies (second group) were made to listen to white noise on the second week and were swung on the third week. Swinging and playing of white noise were performed until the babies stopped crying. After every intervention, the total crying and sleeping durations of the babies were evaluated using a “Colicky Baby’s Diary.” Results: Playing of white noise significantly decreased the daily crying durations (p < .05) and increased the sleeping durations of the colicky babies (p < .05) compared to swinging in both groups. Conclusion: Playing of white noise was found to be a more effective nonpharmaco-logical method on crying and sleeping durations of colicky babies than swinging. Relevance to clinical practice: Playing of white noise may be helpful for parents and healthcare personnel in reducing the gas pains of babies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
