Diarrhoea still ranks among the top causes of the deaths of children under five years old in the world. In solving this important health problem, it is necessary and imperative to know the health-related knowledge levels of mothers who take care of the child individually and the traditional practices they perform when their children are sick, in order to provide effective health education. This study aims to examine the knowledge levels and traditional practices of mothers with children younger than 5 years old regarding diarrhoea in relation to their education levels. We conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey. The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of mothers with children under the age of 5 who lived in the metropolitan city Bursa in the South Marmara Region of Turkey. The survey was applied among the mothers of children under the age of 5 using the snowball sampling method via mobile platforms. The data were collected via Google Forms using a "Socio-Demographic Data Collection Form", an "Information Form on Measuring the Knowledge Level of Mothers on Diarrhoea" and a "Form on Main Traditional Practices Used When Children Have Diarrhoea in Turkey" prepared by the researchers after a review of the relevant literature. In the study, the mean total diarrhoea knowledge score of the participating mothers was found to be 22.01 ± 3.72 (high). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the total diarrhoea knowledge scores of the participants and other variables. The difference in the knowledge scores based on education levels was statistically significant (p <.001). The most prevalently preferred traditional practice in the case of children's diarrhoea was "feeding the child banana" (92.5%). Maternal education level is determined to be a significant variable that positively affects diarrhoea knowledge levels. Diarrhoea continues to be among the top five preventable causes of death in the world and Turkey among children under the age of 5. The knowledge level of mothers about diarrhoea plays an important role in diarrhoea management. The level of knowledge about diarrhoea differs according to the education level of mothers. AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the level of knowledge of students on traditional practices related to pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period and the newborn in Turkey and present the geographical regions of Turkey where traditional practices are more common. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed with the participation of 375 students enrolled at the Midwifery and Nursing Departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences of a university in the Marmara Region located in northwestern Turkey. The data were collected through a Personal Information Form and a Traditional Beliefs and Practices Form created by the researchers. Means, standard deviations, minimum and maximum values, frequencies, and percentages were utilized in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 20.51 ± 2.44 years, 44.5% of them lived in the Marmara Region of Turkey, and most of their parents were primary school graduates. In this study, it was found that most students were not familiar with traditional practices in relation to pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborns in Turkey. It was also ascertained that the beliefs held by the students about pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborns differed across regions. It was found that most students did not know the harmful traditional practices performed for making childbirth easier. Most students were knowledgeable about harmful traditional practices about postpartum. Some of the harmful traditional practices applied to the newborn were determined to be unknown to the students. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, in this study, it was identified that most students were not familiar with traditional practices related to pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period and newborns in Turkey. Before student midwives and nurses have started their careers, they should be informed about traditional beliefs and practices of the society in which they live, and they should be capable of making holistic and comprehensive evaluations. Because of this study, it is recommended that traditional beliefs and practices be included in the curricula of midwifery and nursing schools with particular emphasis on the geographical regions of Turkey. Medicinal plants used in the treatment of animals in Rize province in northeast of Türkiye were recorded through semi-structured interviews with farmers and shepherds. The collected data were analyzed using the quantitative indices informant consensus factor (FIC) and fidelity level (FL). It was identified that a total of 38 plants belonging to 30 families were found used in ethnoveterinary. The most cited families were Fabaceae and Asteraceae. The highest FIC was recorded for digestive system diseases (0.93), followed by skin diseases (0.88) and milk production (0.85). The high FL values were Datisca cannabina L. for varroa, Malva sylvestris L. for wound healing, and Sambucus ebulus L. for external parasite (respectively 100%). Ethnoveterinary uses of Datisca cannabina L., Caltha palustris L., Bryum schleicheri Schwägr., Adiantum capillus-veneris L., Solidago virgaurea L. were recorded for the first time. Background: Many traditional practices related to pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period are used around the world. Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare traditional methods used by women of different cultures during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. Material and methods: This descriptive study was conducted in a maternity hospital in Turkey and gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics in Poland. The study sample consisted of 235 women from Turkey and 230 women from Poland. A self-administrated questionnaire was used to collect the data. Results: It was found that pregnancy-related traditional methods using an increase in skin changes were perceived by 40.3% of the women in Turkey as a pregnancy indicator and a predictor of gender of the infant by the shape of the abdomen in 90.8% of women. Delivery-related traditional methods of burying the umbilical cord were used by 80.1% of women, and postpartum-related traditional methods using depilatory agents for perineal care were endorsed by 42.1% of women. Praying for protection from the evil eye and other evil situations was reported by 62.3% of women. It was found that pregnancy-related traditional methods using intuition were reported by 43.8% of the women in Poland, and the prediction of the gender of an infant was also based on intuitions. Delivery-related traditional methods to prevent the retention of the placenta with massage were reported by 66.7% of women. Postpartum-related traditional methods of taking a shower for perineal care were practiced by 92.2% of women in addition to using red items for protection from the evil eye and other evil situations. Conclusions: It was found that there are various traditional practices during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period in both countries that are similar, but differences also exist between the two countries. Each society exhibits traditions related to their culture. Traditions composed of different rituals are a part of societies' socialization processes. Culture passes down from generation to generation through learned behaviors. Each culture has its own unique daily rituals. Daily rituals are observed in every stage of life from birth to death. These cultural traditions and rituals affect societies' practices even in health and illness.. Humans go through physiological changes during their life cycle. A few important stages in women's life cycle are premenstruation, menstruation and menapause. There are different cultural practices to increase women's comfort in these periods. This study is conducted to find out cultural practices of Uzbek Afghans living in Hatay which is located east of the Mediterranian Region of Turkey. In this study, resource persons were reached and folk medicine practices in the region were tried to be put forward by interview method. Women from different age groups who know the cultural values of the region are the source of the study. 50 Afghan immigrant women were interviewed in the study. This group of Afghans settled in a town called Ovakent in the 1980s and have been preserving their culture by practicing their traditions since then. The focus of this study is to examine traditional practices of women, which comprise half the Afghan population, related to premenstruation, menstruation and menapause. It is culturally important for women to use the herbal and animal drugs that they make with their home facilities in order to relieve the symptoms experienced during these periods and to spend this period comfortably. It was found that women use natural herbal and animal cures during this period of their life cycle to ease their discomfort. It is seen that these products are used in different forms such as crushing, heating and cooking. Sometimes it is seen that mixtures are made from these products. Massages with various oils are preferred by the locals. The most used goods for remedies are legumes, herbal teas and yoghurt. One of the eyecatching practices is using animal hide in relieving pain. In addition, massages using different oils is a commonly used practice. In conclusion, these Afghan women utilize natural goods used daily in relieving their symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of intestinal parasitic diseases (IPD) and associated factors in primary school students and to assess the knowledge and practices of mothers about these diseases.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in January-March 2014 in 471 students aged 5-11 years, studying at 3 schools randomly selected from the city centre regions with different socioeconomic levels. Stratified sampling method was used in the present study and the data were collected in two stages. In the first stage, parents were informed about the study and pre-prepared questionnaire forms were used to collect the data about the students and parents. In the second stage, laboratory analyses of collected stool samples were performed.Results: The total prevalence of IPD was 18.3%, it was higher in the primary school located in a region with a lower socioeconomic level compared to other two schools (27.6% vs. 14.4%, and 10%, respectively). Most commonly detected parasite was E. vermicularis (12.1%). The prevalence of IPD was not associated with the classroom, gender, number of siblings, and the use of purified drinking water at home, while it was found to decrease with the increasing maternal education level. The maternal knowledge level score was 12.01±4.29 vs. 13.41±3.94 in students with and without IPD, respectively. With regard to the methods used to treat IPD, 23% of the mothers reported that they are using conventional methods.Conclusion: The health education programmes about the associated risk factors are of great importance for early detection and treatment of childhood parasitic infections. Background/aim: The purpose of the present study was to identify traditional practices and the extent to which they are practiced by mothers during pregnancy, birth, the postpartum period, and newborn care. Materials and methods: This study was conducted in the city center of Konya (Turkey). Data were collected through questionnaires completed by volunteers. The research sample comprised 450 mothers, all of whom had given birth to at least one live baby. The forms were completed during face-to-face interviews. Results: Some traditional pregnancy practices were followed by 70.7% of the participants. Of the women who performed these practices, 57.4% consciously chose foods they craved, tried not to take nutrients believed to be unsuitable in pregnancy, and took nutrients believed to influence the sex of the baby; 85.6% reported breastfeeding their babies in the first 4 h after birth and 9.7% waited for the first call to prayer (azan) to start breastfeeding. Additionally, 72.2% of the mothers reported performing kırklama (making the forties), a ceremony performed to celebrate the 40th day after a baby's birth. Conclusion: Most of the women who participated in the study still followed some traditional practices and rituals during pregnancy and the postpartum period. This descriptive study was conducted to determine the traditional practices used by 1410 mothers in the care of their babies in Eskisehir, Turkey. The results of the present study suggest that traditional practices, which sometimes may be hazardous or beneficial, are widely used by Turkish mothers. We recommend that families should be informed about the possible hazardous effects of some traditional practices, however the non-hazardous and beneficial practices providing spiritual well-being may be supported. The purpose of this study was to determine the use of traditional practices to ease labour among Turkish women. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 809 women by using an investigator-designed questionnaire. The mean age of the women was 28.9 ± 8.33 years (min = 15, max = 74), 49.4% were between 20-29 years of age and more than half (56.2%) of the women had had one to two pregnancies. The results showed that traditional practices were known and applied mostly by the women who were at an advanced age, less educated and who lived in rural areas. In addition, the knowledge and application status of traditional practices related to religious beliefs were found to be very high compared with superstitious practices. It was suggested that nurses provide culturally competent care that requires a commitment by the individual nurse to develop, refine and use specific skills in the care of women. In Turkey, as in many other countries, infertility is generally regarded as a negative phenomenon in a woman's life and is associated with a lot of stigma by society. In other words, female infertility and having a baby using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have to be taken into consideration with respect to gender, motherhood, social factors, religion and law. Yet if a woman chooses to use ART she has to deal with the consequences of her decision, such as being ostracized by society. Other types of procedures in this area, such as sperm and ova donation or surrogate motherhood, are not permitted in law. However, both before and after the development of this techonology, society has been finding its own solutions which are rarely questioned and are still performed. This article will discuss what these practices are and try to reach some pragmatic conclusions concerning female infertility, the concept of motherhood and some traditional practices in Turkey. Aim: Researchers used descriptive study design to examine the traditional practices of women in relation to maternal and newborn care in the postpartum period., Methods: 523 postpartum women included who were between 15 and 49years of age, had at least one child, and had no medical complications that affect the mother-infant health. A questionnaire was used to collect data. Comparisons were made between the responses about the women's knowledge of traditional practices and other variables., Results: We found that women widely used traditional practices such as putting Koran (Holy book for Muslims) and packing needle under the mother's pillow to prevent mother from "al basması", pouring lead in a cup over the head of the newborn to repel evil spirits, and covering the baby's face with a piece of yellow cloth to prevent neonatal jaundice. The rate of using postpartum traditional practices increased with age and number of pregnancies and decreased with education (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Educational activities are recommended to increase awareness of harmful traditional practices in the field of reproductive health for nurses and midwives. Health professionals should pay special attention to less educated, older and primiparous women from rural areas enable them to reinforce positive cultural practices, and discourage them from using harmful ones by providing non-critical scientific explanations., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc.
