We investigated whether and how different aspects of ingroup positivity (collective narcissism which is the belief that one's ingroup is exceptional but not sufficiently recognized by the others and ingroup satisfaction which is the belief that the ingroup is of high value) would predict collective action tendencies among LGBTI individuals in Turkey (N = 123). We proposed that both constructs would uniquely predict greater collective action tendencies, but through two distinct pathways suggested in social ıdentity model of collective action (SIMCA). As expected, collective narcissism predicted greater collective action tendencies mainly through greater relative deprivation (injustice pathway), whereas ingroup satisfaction was associated with greater collective action tendencies mainly through stronger group efficacy beliefs (efficacy pathway). Both collective narcissism and ingroup satisfaction also directly predicted greater collective action tendencies. We concluded that ingroup satisfaction and collective narcissism may not necessarily lead to disparate outcomes as regards disadvantaged group members' social change motivation. Attitudes toward immigrants are typically investigated from the perspective of the dominant native majority group versus the subordinate ethnic minority group, but there are no apparent reasons why established minority groups would be exempt of negative attitudes towards new immigrant groups. This article investigates the roots of anti-immigrant attitudes among Belgians of Turkish and Moroccan descent. For that purpose, we analyze survey data from the Belgian Ethnic Minorities Elections Study 2014. Our results confirm that negative predispositions toward the arrival of new immigrants in general and Eastern Europeans in particular are also present among Turkish and Moroccan Belgians. Furthermore, we find that feelings of unfair treatment shape anti-immigrant attitudes in important ways. However, the direction of the relationship (positive vs. negative) depends crucially on the specific setting of unfair treatment. While perceived unfair treatment in the labor market arouses interminority hostility, experiences of unfair treatment by the government or in daily life lead to positive attitudes towards newcomers. Identification with the nation rather than with the ethnic group is significantly linked to more negative attitudes towards new immigrants in general (but not towards Eastern European immigrants). We furthermore find that the strength of the relationship between unfair treatment/identity and interminority attitudes depends on the particular immigrant group being evaluated. Using comprehensive and original data derived from a recent major public opinion survey, this study examines an under-investigated aspect of the Kurdish issue in Turkey: the dynamics and factors behind Kurdish ethno-nationalism at a mass level. The empirical findings disprove the conventional socio-economic peace and Islamic-peace hypotheses around this issue, and our statistical analyses provide strong support for the relative deprivation hypothesis, i.e. that those who think the Turkish state discriminates against Kurds are more likely to have ethno-nationalist orientations. Multivariate analyses further show that religious sectarian differences among Kurds (i.e. the Hanefi- Shafi division) matter: the more religious Shafi Kurds have a stronger ethnic consciousness and a higher degree of ethno-nationalism. The study also provides a discussion of the broader theoretical and practical implications of the empirical findings, which may provide insights into conflict resolution prospects in countries with a Kurdish population. This study deals with the question of why the religiosity of visiting, which is only centered around the tombs of saints, is performed and maintained. Phenomenological and Weberian and relative deprivation theories in sociology are used in order to analyze the problem of religiosity of visiting. Convictions and practices of the religiosity of visiting, which are structured around the tombs of saints and dervishes, are examined in a multidimensional way and in terms of typology. The charismatic power magnetizing the religiosity of visiting is the source of an abundance, fertility, purification and remedy which is believed to appease the various feelings of deprivation. Individuals who are incapable of coping with the economic, social, physical and psychological deprivations in social life perform a kind of religiosity of visiting in order to benefit from charismatic powers of saints and to submit their various wishes and demands and to make a vow. Consequently, religiosity accorded to visiting the tombs of saints and dervishes functions as a solution to various deprivations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper develops a concept, a measure and an index of relative labour deprivation and applies these tools to measure deprivation in urban areas of South-East Turkey. It is shown how a Yitzhaki-type of relative deprivation index can be applied to the labor domain and be extended to take into account the notion of reference group derived from modern theories of social justice. In the absence of panel or longitudinal data, such measure results particularly useful to derive policy recommendations for areas characterized by heterogeneous communities. Contrary to what conventional statistics and wisdom would suggest, we find migrants from Eastern Turkey to be less relatively labour deprived than other groups of migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research on the links between income inequality and health and socioeconomic differences in health suggests that relative differences in affluence impact health and well-being more than absolute affluence. This study explored whether self-reported psychosomatic symptoms in adolescents relate more closely to relative affluence (i.e., relative deprivation or rank affluence within regions or schools) than to absolute affluence. Data on family material assets and psychosomatic symptoms were collected from 48,523 adolescents in eight countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Norway, Scotland, Poland, Turkey, and Ukraine) as part of the 2009/10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study. Multilevel regression analyses of the data showed that relative deprivation (Yitzhaki Index, calculated in regions and in schools) and rank affluence (in regions) (1) related more closely to symptoms than absolute affluence, and (2) related to symptoms after differences in absolute affluence were held constant. However, differences in family material assets, whether they are measured in absolute or relative terms, account for a significant variation in adolescent psychosomatic symptoms.
