This study employs a phenomenological approach to investigate the experiences of individuals who access services at a community mental health center (CHMC) in Türkiye The aim of this study is to comprehend the experiences of individuals who participate in psychosocial skills training at the CHMC. Thematic analysis of data from sixteen in-depth interviews revealed three main themes and eight sub-themes. Functionality theme emphasizes the positive impact of CHMC services and training on daily life and social functioning. Effective Factors theme encompasses the elements that improve the effectiveness of CHMC services. Participants have provided suggestions for the content of the training under the theme of Recommendations. Study results show that CHMC services and psychosocial skills training benefit individuals' daily lives and functioning, but that opportunities for improvement exist. It is crucial to incorporate participant feedback, and further research should be conducted to investigate the effectiveness of these services in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between upper extremity functionality, pain intensity, muscle strength, and symptom severity among patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) who underwent mini-open release surgery. Material and Method: This retrospective study entailed the review of medical records of 70 patients diagnosed with CTS who underwent mini-open release surgery between January 2021 and January 2023. Data were collected from preoperative assessments and routine follow-up evaluations conducted at 3 months post-surgery. Upper extremity functionality was assessed utilizing the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, pain severity was determined using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), muscle strength was evaluated through hand grip strength, and disease severity was measured using the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). Results: A statistically significant improvement was observed in DASH questionnaire scores, VAS scores, hand grip strength, and BCTQ scores at the 3-month follow-up compared to preoperative values (p<0.05). Furthermore, significant correlations were found between DASH questionnaire scores and VAS scores, hand grip strength, and BCTQ scores during postoperative assessments (p<0.05). Conclusion: Mini-open-release surgery demonstrates effectiveness as a surgical approach for achieving favorable clinical outcomes in patients with CTS. Furthermore, our findings suggest that postoperative upper extremity functionality may be influenced by factors such as pain intensity, symptom severity, and hand grip strength. Therefore, we advocate for the integration of these factors into postoperative patient evaluation protocols and treatment programs to optimize patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On February 6th, 2023, an earthquake sequence with moment magnitudes (Mw) of 7.8 and 7.5 rocked southern and eastern Turkiye, affecting 15 million-residents and a significant portion of Turkiye's industrial community. In the days following the earthquake sequence, a reconnaissance team was organized to visit the industrial districts in the five provinces of the earthquake region. While performance and functionality of 131 industrial facilities were inspected using the proposed data-collection protocols, 18 interviews with industrial representatives were conducted. The inspection and interview results show that the earthquake sequence had a significant impact on industrial facilities, resulting in enormous economic losses and business disruptions lasting three months to two years. While the sequence imposed severe demands on the facilities, their poor performance is mostly due to discrepancies between seismic design code requirements and building practice. The most affected facilities were found to be those built before 2000, as well as precast reinforced concrete structures with pin-supported roofs. As a result, these types of facilities in earthquake-prone areas are strongly advised to be re-evaluated. Furthermore, various nonstructural building components, such as claddings and equipment/machinery, were substantially damaged at the majority of the assessed sites, causing lengthy interruptions. To reduce future seismic losses and disruptions to industry, the proposed protocols and findings of this field study can be utilized to support further resilience studies on the development of business continuity plans and risk management approaches for industrial facilities. The study aimed to investigate and analyze the suitability of urban furniture at the Topkapı Earthquake Park, which was designed as a venue, where people could take shelter and their basic needs could be met in case of a potential disaster, against universal earthquake park standards. Turkey is located in one of the most active earthquake zones, exposed to devastating effects of this natural disaster on both human lives, nature, and built environment. It is of great importance to effectively design and manage earthquake parks and urban furniture in order to minimize the loss of life that may occur before, during and after the disaster. Accordingly, the urban furniture included in Topkapı Earthquake Park was compared to Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park, an international example, in terms of sitting area, lighting, cover element, garbage bins, signboards, support service elements, and social activity areas based on given criteria and expectations. In addition to the literature review, the similarities and differences between the two earthquake park examples were investigated upon review of data obtained through on-site discovery, observation, and measurement studies, and a detailed comparison was made in a tabular format, supported by visuals. The comparative study helped identify the inadequate elements and problems of the park. In conclusion, although the use of urban furniture in Topkapı Earthquake Park provided a suitable environment for regular daily life, there were inadequate elements with regard to readiness to disaster situations and Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park was at a much better level in terms of planning and design compared to the Topkapı Earthquake Park. Aim: This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the negative automatic thoughts of patients with schizophrenia and their levels of social functionality. Design and Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted 142 patients with schizophrenia. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Negative Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (NATQ) and Social Functioning Assessment Scale (SFAS). Findings: There was a strong negative correlation between the mean scores obtained from the overall NATQ and SFAS. In addition, negative automatic thoughts of the patients with schizophrenia had a negative effect of 47.2% on their social functionality. Practice Implications: It was found that the patients had moderate levels negative automatic thoughts and social functionality; and that their negative automatic thoughts affected their social functionality negatively. Aim: This study was conducted to determine the negative effects on the lives, functioning and marital adjustment of patients with substance use disorder. Method: The sample of the research consisted of 309 patients. The data were collected by using an Information Form, and the Short Functional Rating Scale (SFRS) and Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). Results: It was found that 19.4% of the patients had their education adversely affected, their divorce rate increased and 44% had their economic position negatively affected. It was also determined that physical health deteriorated in 41.7% of patients, 49.2% of them had attempted suicide, 25.2% had the negative sexual experiences and 69.6% were prone to violent behavior, while 19.1% had contracted a contagious disease. The DAS total score of patients was found to be 76.65 ± 32.48 and the total SFRS score was 1.93 ± 0.80. Conclusion: As a result, it has been determined that substance use disorder negatively affects the lives of patients in many ways, and patients' functionalities and marital adjustment are low. Objectives: The purpose was to investigate effects of an in-service training for secondary special education teachers in Turkey. The study was to serve as an initial analysis of the basic knowledge of educators about transition mandates, transition planning and components of quality goals. Methods: Twenty-two teachers of students with DD completed the in-service training. TSTA model was used to structure the training. To assess differences between teachers' knowledge from pre-test to the post-test, paired sample t-tests were employed. Results: A significant increase in knowledge of general transition and goal functionality was observed from pre-test to post-test. Results indicated that the training was effective in both increasing teachers' knowledge and generalization of functional goal writing across content areas. Conclusions: The study revealed the dearth of research related to transition knowledge and generation of high quality transition goals for students with DD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disability is utmost important on an aging population's health. Obesity is associated with increased risk for disability. On-the-other-hand, higher-BMI is reported as associated with better functionality in older people in some reports defined as “obesity paradox”. There is some evidence on differential relationship between body weight status and functionality by living setting gender, and different populations. We studied the relation between body mass index and functionality in Turkish community dwelling older males accounting for the most confounding factors: age, multimorbidity, polypharmacy and nutritional status. This is a cross-sectional study in a geriatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital. Functionality was assessed with evaluation of activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scales. Nutrition was assessed by mini-nutritional assessment test. Two hundred seventy-four subjects comprised our study cohort. Mean age was 74.4 ± 7.1 years, BMI was 25.8 ± 4.4 kg/m2. Linear regression analysis revealed significant and independent association of lower BMI with higher ADL and IADL scores (B = 0.047 and B = 0.128, respectively) (p < 0.05) and better nutritional status (B = 1.94 and B = 3.05, respectively) (p < 0.001) but not with the total number of medications. Higher IADL score was associated with younger age and lower total number of diseases (B = 0.121, B = 0.595, respectively) (p < 0.05) while ADL was not. We suggest that lower BMI is associated with better functional status in Turkish community-dwelling male older people. Our study recommends longitudinal studies with higher participants from different populations, genders and living settings are needed to comment more. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objective: The concepts of functionality and remission in schizophrenia are being subject for a substantial amount of research. At the same time, an increasing number of scales are developed in our country and worldwide, which are intended to measure the level of functionality in severe mental disorders. Functional remission is an important goal of treatment, which provides possibility of an autonomous lifestyle for schizophrenia patients, allowing them to readapt to their relationships with parents, work life, other interpersonal communications and social environments. The "Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia" (FROGS) Scale was developed in French and is suitable for use in research as well as for clinical evaluation of patients. We intended to carry out a validity and reliability study on this scale in order to make it eligible for use in the conditions within Turkey. Methods: 102 schizophrenia patients, either inpatients or outpatients, receiving treatment in the Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Psychiatry Department, were included in the study. In this research, reliability of the "Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia" (FROGS) Scale was assessed by investigating the internal consistency coefficients and item analysis procedures of every subscale and interrater reliability coefficient, whereas validity was evaluated by factor analysis, content validity and criterion validity. In order to test the criterion and content validities in addition to the FROGS Scale, the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS) was used and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was aplied to determine the symptom severity. Results: Within the reliability analysis, the highest internal consistency coefficient of the scale (0.89) was found using Cronbach's Alpha method. The lowest internal consistency coefficient (0.86) was obtained with Guttman's split-half technique. The investigation of the item analysis results of the "Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia" (FROGS) Scale has shown that all of the items which the scale consists of are significant at 0.01 level when they are assessed using all three methods of item total, item remainder and distinctiveness (p<0.01). Therefore, it was decided that those items are excellent and they should be included in the scale. Criterion validity analysis was carried out between the FROGS Scale and the Quality of Life Scale and a high level of correlation was observed (r=0.82, p<0.0001). A good level of correlation was found between the FROGS Scale and PANSS, as well (r =- 0.51, p<0.001). Conclusion: The Turkish version of the "Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia" (FROGS) Scale is a tool which can assess the functional remission of schizophrenia patients in a reliable and valid level. Red lentils (Lens culinaris) present an attractive raw material for meat mimics due to its red-coloured proteins, abundance, high protein and low cost. However, data on its functional properties at various pH remain scarce. In this study, the physicochemical and functional properties of red lentil proteins (RLP) from three origins (USA, Nepal and Turkey), isolated by isoelectric precipitation, were evaluated. Amino acid profiles, water holding (ranging from 3.1 to 3.5 g/g) and oil absorption (ranging from 5.8 to 7.3 g/g) capacities of RLP samples were significantly different (p < 0.05). RLP consisted of legumin and vicilin, and comprised predominantly glutamine/glutamic acid (ranging from 8.72 to 10.55 g/100 g). Surface charge, protein solubility, foaming and emulsifying properties were the lowest and poorest at pH 5.2 (isoelectric point). Overall, good functional properties of RLP under high acidity and alkalinity conditions make it a promising protein for mimicking a wide range of meats., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
