Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between fatalism and level of hope in surgical cancer patients. Material and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of 314 patients from the surgical clinics and oncology department of the Ondokuz Mayıs University Health Practice and Research Hospital between October 2021 and March 2023 in Turkey. All patients aged 18 and over who did not have communication problems, had cancer surgery, spread or radiation therapy, and did not agree to participate in the study were included in the study. Personal Information Form, Fatalism Tendency Scale, and Dispositional Hope Scale were used to collect data. Results: The mean age of participants was 59.45±10.16 (minmax: 27-80). The mean Fatalism Tendency total score of patients was 82.8 ± 12.2, and the mean Dispositional Hope total score was 52.3 ± 7.2. It was determined that there was a significant difference between the Fatalism Tendency total score average, and the marital status, education level, place of residence, person living with, and seeing spirituality as important (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between fatalism tendency and continuous hope levels in oncology patients (r: 0.124, p<0.05). Conclusion: Understanding the significance of surgical cancer patients' hope levels and fatalistic tendencies during surgical treatment and care can provide support to patients for treatment decisions, psychosocial assistance, experienced quality of life, and care planning. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between midwifery students' health fatalism, epilepsy knowledge, attitudes, and some sociodemographic variables. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 270 midwifery department students who were studying at a state university and who agreed to participate in the study in eastern Turkey during the 2021--2022 academic year. The data were collected using a Sociodemographic Information Form, the Health Fatalism Scale (HFS), the Epilepsy Knowledge Scale (EKS), and the Epilepsy Attitude Scale (EAS). Results: The midwifery students had total mean scores of 49.69±13.25, 7.71±3.69, and 54,87±8.13 for the HFS, EKS, and EAS, respectively. It was found that those who had social contact with epilepsy patients had significantly higher EKS and EAS scores, but no correlation with HFS. Conclusion: The study of midwifery students in Eastern Turkey shows that close contact with epilepsy patients is associated with better knowledge of and attitude to epilepsy, although the high health fatalism remains. This study explores the tourism behavior of an underdeveloped destination-Yozgat located in Turkey using different techniques of ethnographic research approach. We use longitudinal data, gathered sequentially from the same place over time for the data analysis. Three main factors (18 themes including 58 indicators) that identify characteristics of an underdeveloped destination are determined and illustrated. In recent decades, particularly since 2002, relations between Iran and Turkey have been on the rise and generally expanding. The aim of this paper is to analyse and clarify the reasons for the sustainability of the two countries' relations while undergoing intermittent eruptions of disputes over the years. In other words, the main question is: why have Iran and Turkey, with their political frictions, routinely embraced rapprochement and collaboration in recent decades? Accordingly, the hypothesis proposed is that a key reason for the ongoing cooperation between Tehran and Ankara in different fields, is the rationale of geopolitical complementarity engendering their security needs in broad meaning, particularly energy security and natural gas. Whilst the logic also applies to water security, both states attach greater importance to border security and energy. In short, their common geopolitical destiny over-rides individual state preferences. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted to compare health fatalism and factors affecting it in individuals who had and did not have the disease during the Covid-19 pandemic period. The population of the study consisted of individuals registered to the Family Health Center unit of a province in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (N=1094). In order to determine the sample of the study, the sample calculation formula was used from groups with known population and the study was completed with 247 individuals. Data were collected face-to-face using the Sociodemographic Data Form and Health Fatalism Scale. As a result of the study, individuals with Covid-19 scored 54.12±17.88 and individuals without Covid-19 scored 56.73±17.62 on the Health Fatalism Scale. The difference in the mean score of Health Fatalism between the two groups was found to be statistically insignificant (p>0.05). In the Covid-19 group, the difference in the mean score of the Health Fatalism Scale according to marital status and education level was statistically significant (p<0.05). In the group without Covid-19, the difference in the mean score of the Health Fatalism Scale according to marital status, education level and employment status was statistically significant (p<0.05). In the study, the Health Fatalism score was found to be above the middle level in all individuals with and without Covid-19. Having or not having the disease did not affect health fatalism. In the comparison made, the health fatalism score in both groups was higher in married people and those with lower education level. While the fatalism score increased with increasing age in the Covid-19 group, there was no such relationship between age and health fatalism in the non-Covid-19 group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Republic of Türkiye is an organization resulting from thousands of years of historical accumulation and a thousand years of nationalization experience in the geography of Türkiye where it was founded. In this respect, Türkiye has gained its identity with the historical accumulation of the states named after the ruling dynasties of the Huns, Gokturks, Oghuzs, Seljuks and Ottomans, and the cultural and civilizational accumulation of the Seljuks and Ottomans of Türkiye. The Republic of Türkiye was founded on these values of historical accumulation, culture and civilization. The 1808 Sened-i İttifak, the First Constitutional Assembly and the Constitution of 1876, the Second Constitutional Assembly and the Constitution of 1909, and finally the opening of the Grand National Assembly on 23 April 1920 and the Constitution of 1921 were the building blocks of this historical accumulation. The first article of the 1921 Constitution states: "The sovereignty belongs to the nation unconditionally". Therefore, after the Turkish War of Independence, the abolition of the Ottoman Sultanate on 1 November 1922 and the inclusion of (Art.1) "The sovereignty belongs to the nation unconditionally. The method of administration is based on the principle of the people's personal and active management of their destiny. The form of government of the State of Türkiye is a republic" into the 1921 Constitution on 29 October 1923 and the election of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the Commander-in-Chief of the National Struggle, as the "president-republic" of the Republic of Türkiye were not found odd by anyone. In this respect, this study will examine the elections of Mustafa İsmet İnönü, who was elected as the second president on 11 November 1938 after the "Eternal Chief" who died on 10 November 1938 and was elected as the president of the republic three more times after the first election. Background. Turkey is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes in Europe, with about one in every seven adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. By 2035, Turkey will have the highest number of people with type 2 diabetes in Europe, at almost 12 million. Mortality rates have increased with the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes, especially in the younger population, such that half of the deaths come from those under sixty. The beliefs and mental state of patients with chronic illnesses like diabetes can affect disease outcomes and the patients’ self-management. Self-care and diabetes medications are important components in improving the disease outcome, though many studies have shown that these activities can be negatively related to fatalism about the disease state. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Diabetes Fatalism Scale (DFS), which was developed by Dr. Leonard Egede. Materials and methods. This was a methodological study. The scales were administered to a total of 139 patients with type 2 diabetes. The content and construct validity of the scale were assessed. The construct validity was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis, and the reliability was assessed in terms of internal consistency. Results. In terms of the population tested, 54.7 % of the participants were men, 73.4 % were married, 54 % had one additional disease other than diabetes, 18 % were high school graduates, the mean age was 50.20 ± 16.82 years, the average duration of diabetes was 19.31 ± 14.25 years, and mean glycated hemoglobin level was 7.06 ± 0.65 %. It was found that the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling-size adequacy was 0.770, indicating an adequate size, and the chi-square value was 1078.402. When the fifth item was excluded from the study and the analysis was repeated, the KMO coefficient was 0.802 and the chisquare value was 1020.244, p = 0.000. The Cronbach’s alpha value reached 0.806, indicating a good internal consistency. The Cronbach’s alpha values of the other subscales also seemed to be at a very good level. Conclusions. Our study showed that the DFS is a valid and reliable scale for the Turkish society. Metamorphism is a motif that depends on transformations. One of the narrative genres in which this motif is seen is legends. In this study, metamorphism motif in the legends is discussed in the context of wars, is presented with the help of the sample texts selected from the Turkish legends of the Anatolian area. This study aims to reveal how the phenomenon of war, which determines the destiny of humanity contributes to the shaping of the metamorphism motif. Purpose - Turkey has undergone a major market transformation during the recent decades. This chapter seeks to explore the role of religious politics in some Turkish informal workers' pro-capitalistic change of heart as a response to that transformation. Methodology/approach - The study is based on participant observation and interviews in a squatter district in Istanbul, Sultanbeyli. This is a two- phase ethnography, consisting of first-hand observations first during 2000-2002, and then in 2006. The fleidnotes are supplemented by 90 interviews. Findings - Islamic mobilization eases the transformation of habitus in a liberalizing society and the transition from the predominance of social capital to the predominance of economic capital. I contend that the sub- proletariat's dispositions depend on (urban as well as national) historical context and articulation to political and religious movements. Originality/value of paper - I discuss Bourdieu `s study of the transition from subsistence-driven economies to market economies. The chapter points out that Bourdieu's approach to the problem of transition is more satisfactory in comparison to modernization theory and resistance studies. However, I will show that the problems Bourdieu identifies in Kabylia and Beam (such as `fatalism of despair") are less salient in Istanbul because of a sociopolitical movement (Islamism) that garners consent among the sub-proletarians by using religion as a disciplining force. In Turkish culture, different meanings, related or unrelated with each other made of to 'Felek' as a metaphorical term. 'Felek' with meanings such as sky, space, heaven, world, universe, luck, fortune, chance, timeserver, fate, a layer for each planet and etc. has also an important position in folk literature. The understanding of 'Felek' in Turkish folk literature is a little different from other areas. While 'Felek' is an imagination of sky as a nested bowl or port of sky with seven or nine layers in mysticism and in Divan poetry (tent, dome, roof, cupola, castle, cup, pot, bottle, seven seas, dragon with seven heads, mill, cabinet, furnace, shelter, violin, 'cevsen', helmet, dervish, juggler, planet etc.) it is imagined as world, fate, time, sky, Allah or the divinity that determines the destiny in folk literature. In some texts, 'Felek' is presented as an old man or as a hag who determines the fate of people by turning the wheel of fortune, in others it is presented as a relentless Azrail (the angel of death) who makes any kind of badness to people -especially to minstrels and poets - by separating them from their lovers, by sending them to foreign lands, by fighting with them or by taking their lives. • Individuals with epilepsy have high levels of health fatalism. • Polytherapy affects individuals' levels of health fatalism. • Frequency of seizures and level of education affects health fatalism. In individuals with epilepsy, health fatalism can affect their perceptions of health and their responses to solutions offered, both positively and negatively. This study aimed to investigate health fatalism in people with epilepsy in Turkey and the factors that influence their health fatalism. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2019 and April 2020 with 100 epilepsy patients who were referred to a neurology outpatient clinic in the North of Turkey. The data for the study were collected using a descriptive information form and the Health Fatalism Scale (HES). The total mean score on the Health Fatalism Scale for the study participants was found to be 56,16 ± 15,71. Significant association was found between health fatalism and educational status (p < 0,05), polytherapy (p < 0,05), and frequency of seizures (p < 0,001). In this study, individuals with epilepsy expressed high levels of fatalism in their health beliefs. It was found that illiterate individuals with epilepsy held more fatalistic beliefs. In addition, it was found that participants who used polytherapy and those who had frequent seizures also had higher levels of fatalistic health beliefs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was carried out to identify the attitudes toward epilepsy, health fatalism, and the factors affecting these in individuals living in Artvin in the northeast of Turkey. This descriptive and cross-sectional study involved 1443 healthy individuals at a hospital in Artvin in northeastern Turkey between January and March 2020. An individual information form, an epilepsy attitude scale, and a religious health fatalism scale were used to assess their views. An independent sample t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. The mean score of participants' attitudes on epilepsy was 48.17 (standard deviation (SD) = 12.93), while the mean of their health fatalism score was 48.43 (SD = 17.41). There was a significant negative correlation between attitude scores and health fatalism (r = − 0.084, p = 0.001). Significant differences were found among attitude, health fatalism mean scores, and misconceptions associated with religion about epilepsy being a contagious, psychiatric, and incurable disease that should be hidden. Significant differences were additionally observed among attitude, health fatalism mean scores, and education, marital status, income, employment status, and presence of chronic disease (p < 0.05). It was found that most individuals had moderate level attitude toward epilepsy and had high health fatalism. Individuals with a high degree of health fatalism were found to have more negative attitude toward epilepsy. Attitude was found to be more negative, and health fatalism was found to be higher in individuals with low education level, low-income level, who were married, who were unemployed, who had a chronic disease, and in those who thought epilepsy was a contagious, psychiatric, and incurable disease associated with religion that should be hidden. It is recommended that health professionals organize training programs to increase public understanding of epilepsy, improving individual attitudes toward the condition, and minimizing health fatalism. • The attitudes that prevail in society about epilepsy affect the quality of life of individuals who suffer from the disease. • Health fatalism is not conducive to good health habits and should be minimized. • The participants interviewed in this study were found to have high health fatalism, which was closely associated with negative attitudes toward epilepsy. • Individuals' attitudes toward epilepsy and health fatalism are influenced by their misconceptions about the disease.
