In this study, it was aimed to determine organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in three types of milk (cow's, buffalo's, and sheep's milk) produced in Afyonkarahisar province of Turkey. The results indicated that these milk specimens were found to be contaminated by 21 different pesticides. Sixteen OCP residues were detected in sheep's milk and it was followed with 14 pesticides in buffalo's milk and 11 pesticides in cow's milk. Dominant pesticides in all samples examined were beta-HCH in buffalo's, cow's, and sheep's milk in the concentrations of 63.36, 91.32, and 122.98 ng/ml, respectively. Total OCP levels were found to be 243.81 ng/ml in sheep's milk, 151.02 ng/ml in cow's milk, and 133.38 ng/ml in buffalo's milk. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in the milk of cows in the villages of Kayseri province, Turkey. Ninety milk samples were investigated for AFM1 contamination using the enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA). The mean value of AFM1 levels was 59.9 ng/L, 95% confidence interval was 54.4-65.5 ng/L, and standard deviation was 26.6 ng/L. For 63 samples (70%) the values were significantly above the limit permitted by European Union criteria (EU) and the Turkish Food Codex (TFC) (P < 0.05). However, the differences in AFM1 levels between villages were not significant (P > 0.05). In conclusion, since the level of AFM1 in the milk of cows was higher in Kayseri province, this must be seen as a significant public health problem. Milk is a very important content of the human diet. The present study was performed to determine the concentrations of trace and toxic trace elements in 21 different milk samples in Turkish supermarkets. We aimed to evaluate the potential health risks of toxic elements to humans through ingestion. The concentrations of 19 elements lithium (Li), beryllium (Be), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), molybdenum (Mo), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), lead (Pb), bismuth (Bi), mercury (Hg), thallium (Tl), and uranium (U) in milk samples were determined by using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The accuracy and precision of the method were verified by experiments. Nutritional trace elements were found to be below their reference intake levels. Although we found wide variation between the toxic element levels in the samples, none of the concentrations reached a health-threatening level. This is the first study presenting a wide range of elements including the toxic ones in a different variety of milk samples sold throughout the Turkish supermarkets.

Background: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is usually transient, with most children tolerating ingested cow's milk by 3 years of age. This study aimed to determine factors that promote or hindering the development of tolerance to CMPA., Methods: A logistic regression model was used to determine independent risk factors associated with tolerance and persistence of CMPA., Result: A total of 178 children diagnosed with CMPA were included in the study. The patients' median age was 32 months (minimum-maximum, 14 to 144 months), and their median follow-up period was 30 months (minimum-maximum, 12 to 54 months). In the follow-up, CMPA persisted in 62 (34.8%) patients. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to patient's age. Group I was <3 years old and group II was ≥3 years old. The factors independently associated with the persistence of CMPA for group I were as follows: comorbid food allergies (p = 0.021), the presence of an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated reaction (p = 0.001), and respiratory system symptoms (ie, tachypnea) (p = 0.036). The presence of gastrointestinal-related discomfort (p = 0.001) was an independent risk factor associated with the development of tolerance. The presence of comorbid food allergies (p = 0.03) was the only independent predictive factor for CMPA persistence for group II., Conclusion: The prognosis in cases of CMPA, a food allergy, is good, with tolerance developing over time. The presence of IgE-mediated CMPA, respiratory-related symptoms (ie, tachypnea), and the presence of comorbid food allergies have negative effects on tolerance., (© 2018 ARS-AAOA, LLC.)
