Heritage places represent the identities of communities, but they often become contested due to their meanings or associations with competing identities, making them targets for destruction during political and armed conflicts. Reconstruction is one way of dealing with the demolition of symbolic heritage places to enable collective healing after traumatic events. However, it can also be manipulated, prioritising national identities. Originally intended to prevent the deliberate demolition of heritage places, reconstruction as a preservation approach in Turkey has become an ideological tool, recreating an idealised Ottoman past in the service of neo-Ottomanist heritage policies. This paper aims to discuss the political uses and abuses of reconstruction in Turkey through three former Ottoman capitals: Istanbul, Bursa, and Edirne. By outlining the motives behind selected cases, the paper argues that reconstructions in multi-layered and multicultural heritage places select, emphasise, and recreate a particular past from a multitude of pasts in Turkey. Objective: Craniopharyngiomas (CPG) have complex treatment challenges due to their proximity to vital structures, surgical and radiotherapeutic complexities, and the tendency for recurrence. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of endocrine and metabolic comorbidities observed during initial diagnosis and long-term follow-up in a nationwide cohort of pediatric CPG patients. A further aim was to highlight the difficulties associated with CPG management. Methods: Sixteen centers entered CPG patients into the ÇEDD NET data system. The clinical and laboratory characteristics at presentation, administered treatments, accompanying endocrine, metabolic, and other system involvements, and the patient's follow-up features were evaluated. Results: Of the 152 evaluated patients, 64 (42.1%) were female. At presentation, the mean age was 9.1±3.67, ranging from 1.46 to 16.92, years. The most common complaints at presentation were headache (68.4%), vision problems (42%), short stature (15%), and nausea and vomiting (7%). The surgical procedures were gross total resection (GTR) in 97 (63.8%) and subtotal resection in 55 (36.2%). Radiotherapy (RT) was initiated in 11.8% of the patients. Histopathological examination reported 92% were adamantinamatous type and 8% were papillary type. Postoperatively, hormone abnormalities consisted of thyroid-stimulating hormone (92.1%), adrenocorticotropic hormone (81%), antidiuretic hormone (79%), growth hormone (65.1%), and gonadotropin (43.4%) deficiencies. Recombinant growth hormone treatment (rhGH) was initiated in 27 (17.8%). The study showed hesitancy among physicians regarding rhGH. The median survival without relapse was 2.2 years. Median (range) time of relapse was 1.82 (0.13-10.35) years. Relapse was related to longer followups and reduced GTR rates. The median follow-up time was 3.13 years. Among the last follow-up visits, the prevalence of obesity was 38%, but of these, 46.5% were already obese at diagnosis. However, 20% who were not obese at baseline became obese on follow-up. Permanent visual impairment was observed in 26 (17.1%), neurological deficits in 13 (8.5%) and diabetes mellitus in 5 (3.3%) patients. Conclusion: Recurrence was predominantly due to incomplete resection and the low rate of postoperative RT. Challenges emerged for multidisciplinary regular follow ups. It is suggested that early interventions, such as dietary restrictions and increased exercise to prevent obesity, be implemented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: While the Thrombite device differs from the Solitare stent with its Helical open-side structure feature, it shows great similarity with its other features. We assessed the Thrombite device's effectiveness and safety in this study. Materials and methods: The study was a retrospective analysis of patients who were included in the Turkish Interventional Neurology database and who had mechanical thrombectomy with the Thrombite device as the first choice between January 2020 and January 2023. The type of study is descriptive research. Result: Using the Thrombite thrombectomy device, 525 patients received treatment. The median baseline National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score was 13, the median initial Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography (ASPECT) score was 8, and the mean patient age was 68.6+11.7 years. Between the groin puncture and the successful recanalization, the median time was 34 minutes (interquartile range [IQR]: 15-45). 48.2% (modified treatment in cerebral infarction; mTICI) 2b/3% and 33.9% (mTICI 2c/3) were the first-pass recanalization rates. In the end, 87.7% of patients had effective recanalization (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 2b/3). In the "first-pass" subgroup, the favorable functional result (modified Rankin Scale 0-2) was 51.8%, while it was 41.6% for the entire patient population. The rate of embolization into new territory/different territory were 2.1/0.1%. 23 patients (4.5%) had symptomatic hemorrhage. Conclusion: The Thrombite device showed a good safety profile and high overall successful recanalization rates in our experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Birch tree Betula pendula Roth. is an important ornamental and forest plant, which has a distribution in many parts of the world and has about 40 species. In Turkey, it is frequently encountered in North Anatolia and East Anatolia regions. There are many harmful insect species known to damage birch trees. Samples of the pest species that are the subject of this study were taken from Erzurum Center, Atatürk University Campus, Merkez Teke Stream and Aziziye Campus. The aim of the study is to determine the biology and damage of Nematus (=Croesus) septentrionalis (L., 1758) on birch trees. Samples were collected between 20 June and 20 September 2019 and 2020. A preliminary assessment study was conducted in 2018 to determine the pest's ecology. The adult specimen of the insect was collected from birch trees on sunny days. The larvae were collected by cutting with the help of pruning shears together with the leaves of the branches they ate. Pupae were obtained by digging the soil to a depth of 4 fingers (10-15 cm) with the help of a hoe. The collected adults were placed in jars and killed with ethyl acetate. Dead samples were transferred to a small cardboard box, brought to the laboratory, taped and labeled with the location, size and date of sample collection written on the box. The larvae were placed in a desiccator with the soil at the bottom together with the leaves they will feed on, absorbent cotton moistened with water was left on the ground and fresh leaves were brought to the laboratory every other day to feed and mature the larvae. As a result of the research, spawning time, larval stage and number of generations of Nematus (=Croesus) septentrionalis were determined under natural living conditions. While the number of damaged trees was determined to obtain the parasitism ratio, the damaged leaves on the branches of randomly selected trees were also counted to determine the number of eggs and larvae on the leaves. In this study, the biology of Nematus (=Croesus) septentrionalis and its damage to birch trees were investigated. Useful information has been uncovered for future researchers working on this topic. It was determined that the pest gave one generation per year in Erzurum conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concerns about the integrity of Turkey's elections have increased with the recent transition from a parliamentary democracy to an executive presidency under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Election forensics tools are used to identify statistical traces of certain types of electoral fraud, providing important information about the integrity and validity of democratic elections. Such analyses of the 2017 and 2018 Turkish elections revealed that malpractices such as ballot stuffing or voter manipulation may indeed have played a significant role in determining the election results. Here, we apply election forensic statistical tests for ballot stuffing and voter manipulation to the results of the 2023 presidential election in Turkey. We find that both rounds of the 2023 presidential election exhibit similar statistical irregularities to those observed in the 2018 presidential election, however the magnitude of these distortions has decreased. We estimate that 2.4% (SD 1.9%) and 1.9% (SD 1.7%) of electoral units may have been affected by ballot stuffing practices in favour of Erdoğan in the first and second rounds, respectively, compared to 8.5% (SD 3.9%) in 2018. Areas with smaller polling stations and fewer ballot boxes had significantly inflated votes and turnout, again, in favor of Erdoğan. Furthermore, electoral districts with two or fewer ballot boxes were more likely to show large swings in vote shares in favour of Erdoğan from the first to the second round. Based on a statistical model, it is estimated that these shifts account for 342,000 additional ballots (SD 4,900) or 0.64% for Erdoğan, which is lower than the 4.36% margin by which Erdoğan was victorious. Our results suggest that Turkish elections continue to be riddled with statistical irregularities, that may be indicative of electoral fraud. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2020, the waters of the Ilısu Dam Reservoir reached Hasankeyf, a historic town in the southeast of Turkey. Despite the public outcry, the 'New Hasankeyf' had already been constructed across the historic town, including an open-air museum. Comprising of a cultural park, a new museum building and an archaeological park, the open-air museum presents some of the monuments transferred from the historic town together with museum displays exhibiting Hasankeyf's architecture and everyday life. The main motive of the Turkish authorities was to 'presence' the once-living Hasankeyf through the urbanism and architecture, its open-air museum, and the narratives of museum displays. This article discusses how musealisation has been used as a strategy to conciliate the opposition for the loss of a once-living Hasankeyf and how the new open-air museum is in fact an absent presence, a constant reminder of what is being lost. By outlining the approaches and strategies used to transfer and present historic monuments, fragments, and artefacts in the open-air museum, the article argues that the musealisation of Hasankeyf is a clear manifestation of lost heritage, which should be regarded as 'absent heritage'. OBJECTIVE: Studies have investigated the effects of lockdowns on air quality around the world and found that fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide concentrations decreased due to reduced human activity, while ozone concentrations increased. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the correlation between daily stringency index values of our country and daily PM
10 , nitrogen dioxide, and ozone measurements in different districts of Istanbul between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2022. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and National Air Quality Monitoring Network data on Istanbul air quality monitoring stations were used. The analysis included 15 stations that can monitor at least 75% of the days in a year. PM10 , nitrogen dioxide, and ozone were the main pollutants analyzed. RESULTS: There was negative correlation between daily PM10 measurements and daily stringency index values in 3 stations; there was positive correlation in 6 stations. Between daily stringency index values and daily nitrogen dioxide measurements, there was a negative correlation in 3 stations and a positive correlation in 1 station. The daily measurements of 1 station showed a negative correlation with the daily values of stringency index for both PM10 and nitrogen dioxide. In 1 station, while PM10 measures were negatively correlated with stringency index, nitrogen dioxide measurements were positively correlated. CONCLUSION: This study showed that pandemic limitations could not improve Istanbul's air quality everywhere. For adequate evaluation of impact of the limitations on air quality, it may be more relevant to study the socioeconomic infrastructure of each living area, the sociospatial inequality, industrial employment, the number of households, the density of employee class, and so on with all influencing factors that could have contributed to these various changes. Objective: To evaluate the thiol-disulfide homeostasis in patients with a diagnosis of non-muscle invasive bladder tumor (NMIBC), which is a new oxidative stress marker, and to investigate the relationship between the development of NMIBC and native thiol, total thiol, and dynamic disulfide values. Materials and Methods: Fifty-three patients who were operated for bladder tumor in Karabük University Karabük Training and Research Hospital, Clinic of Urology between February and November 2020 and diagnosed with NMIBC in the pathological examination and 60 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Plasma native thiol, total thiol and disulfide levels of these two groups were measured and compared. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of native thiol, total thiol and disulfide values. In the subgroup analysis in those diagnosed with NMIBC, native thiol values were found to be 255,870 µmol/L in the low grade patient group and 169,420 µmol/L in the high grade patient group. This difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: The thiol disulfide homeostasis shifted to the disulfide side in the NMIBC group. It was determined that an increase in serum disulfide level and a decrease in native thiol level may have diagnostic value in predicting NMIBC. In addition, in the group diagnosed with NMIBC, there was a significant decrease in native thiol values as the pathological grade increased. This was interpreted as a shift of the equilibrium towards the oxidant side as the tumor showed an aggressive course. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because Islamism emerged as a local socio‐political movement in the Turkish modernisation history as an alternative solution to problems in addition to modern ideologies transferred from the West, Islamism has always been a subject of discussion as an important socio‐political movement in Turkish political life. However, this movement that emerged in the early periods of the Turkish modernisation history has gone through significant changes in the process to date. Domestic and foreign developments have had an important effect on these changes. Until recently, Islamism claimed to be an alternative to Western political understanding and civilisation, but as a result of being in power lately, it has sought to have a part in the system and to Islamise modernity. This situation constitutes the most important change the Islamic movement has gone through to date. This situation, that is, the transition from being an alternative to being within the system, has brought along debates about whether this can be considered as the end of the Islamic movement, or whether the emerging new situation represents a post‐Islamist period. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether the current era of Turkish Islamism indicates a post‐Islamist era considering the social and political changes it has undergone from its start to the present day, and to examine the main characteristics of this new era. After coming to power in 2002, the Justice and Development Party evoked the 'glory' of the Ottoman past, seeking to expand Turkey's cultural sphere of influence to the former territories of the Ottoman Empire – a phenomenon commonly referred to as neo-Ottomanism. While neo-Ottomanism is generally discussed as a component of foreign policy, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency's (TIKA) intervention in the heritage dynamics of foreign countries was intimately linked with domestic policies. This paper discusses how neo-Ottomanist policies selectively created transnational heritage sites, and how these sites have dialectically become instruments of domestic politics. This study aims to reveal the relationship between the COVID-19 mortality indicators and socioeconomic status (SES) and air pollution. In this ecological study, the focus was put on the relationship between COVID-19 mortality and both air quality and socioeconomic status at the district level in Istanbul. The mortality variables of the study are the excess deaths due to the pandemic, the proportion of deaths due to the pandemic among all deaths, COVID-19 mortality rate (per 100,000), and the proportion of COVID-19 deaths among older people (above the age of 65). The daily air quality measurements of PM
10 , SO2 , NO2 , and NOx of the pre-pandemic term were included in the research to avoid bias due to decreasing traffic burden during the pandemic. Partial correlation was applied to analyze the relationship between air quality and mortality measures by controlling socioeconomic status, the percentage of the older population, and household size. Every 20% deterioration in the SES stratum has contributed to a 4% increase in excess mortality at the district level. The elderly population ratio of over 10% in the districts was found to increase the COVID-19 deaths in the total population by 35% and the deaths in the population over 65 years old by 3%. Average household size was correlated with COVID-19 deaths in the population over 65. A moderate correlation was found between the COVID-19 mortality rate per 100,000 population and PM10 , SO2 , and NO2 (r = 0.413, 0.421, and 0.431, respectively). Mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Istanbul is related to an interaction of socioeconomic characteristics and air pollution as an environmental issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

However, as Massicard argues, I muhtarlik i still exists and I muhtar i s are still local "notables", elected by their communities to work as "intermediaries" between the state and the public. In this regard, two of the participating I muhtar i s were women, which is highly unusual because female I muhtar i s account for fewer than 1.95% of all I muhtar i s in Turkey (p. 16). COVID-19 pandemic , *TRANSPORTATION - Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that the social determinants of health play a fundamental role in the course of the pandemic. This article aims to reveal the class dynamics of the COVID-19 epidemic in İstanbul, Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Spatial analysis and geographic information system data provided by İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality for March and April 2020 were used. Public transport mobility and turnstile data were analyzed. The data obtained were collated into thematic maps. RESULTS: Between March 16 and 24, 2020, the use of public transportation declined with the tightening of movement restrictions. However, despite the restrictions, an increase in transportation density was observed between 6 and 9 AM and between 5 and 7 PM. Although the overall mobility toward outside the city has fallen due to travel restrictions, it has been observed that exit mobility continued between Gebze and Kocaeli, both industrial centers where blue-collar jobs dominate. Most of the mobility in the city is observed in Avcılar, Bahçelievler, Esenyurt, and Küçükçekmece, which are mostly blue-collar residential districts. On the Asian side, activity was observed in Kurtköy, Pendik, Şamandıra, Ümraniye, and Tuzla, areas where blue-collar workers predominantly reside. From March 25 to April 7, 2020, it was determined that the most intense activity areas of the blue-collar workers were Avcılar, Bahçelievler, Bağcılar, Çekmeköy, Esenyurt, Küçükçekmece, Ümraniye, and D-100 highway line. CONCLUSION: The density in the use of public transportation rose during the hours corresponding to the working hours of the workers who had to continue working despite the pandemic. In addition, the physical movement of blue-collar workers continued despite the travel restrictions imposed along the city borders where they worked and resided. Our data point to the importance of social protection measures for workers in general, and blue-collar workers in particular, for the management of the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The coronavirus disease pandemic is a major problem that the world has been facing since December 2019. It mainly affects the respiratory system; however, the disease can affect the kidneys to different degrees. This study aimed to determine the changes in tubular dysfunction and inflammation parameters in children with coronavirus disease using urine biomarkers. Materials and Methods: We included 36 children who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction using respiratory specimens. Coronavirus disease-positive and -negative period parameters were evaluated. For measurement of interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, and urine β2 microglobulin levels, patients' urine samples were collected at diagnosis and 1 month after discharge. Additionally, routine urine and hematological parameters were evaluated concurrently. Results: For all patients, the median urine β2 microglobulin, serum urea, and lactate dehydrogenase levels were significantly higher in the coronavirus disease-positive period than in the coronavirus disease-negative period (P < .05). Further, serum platelet count was signifi- cantly lower in the coronavirus disease-positive period than in the coronavirus disease-negative period (P < .05). However, there was no difference in serum creatinine, interleukin-6, or interleukin-1β levels between the 2 periods (P > .05). Conclusion: Our results suggest kidney involvement and tubular dysfunction in patients with asymptomatic, mild, and moderate infections. Furthermore, interleukin-1β and interleukin- 6 levels were high in the urine, even in non-critically ill patients. We believe that these findings contribute to the accumulation of evidence on continued inflammation in the kidney. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIR pollution , *PARTICULATE matter , *ENVIRONMENTAL monitoring , *RESEARCH methodology - Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Ambient air pollution is an important cause of morbidity and mortality for both individual and public health. The major contaminant that creates air pollution in Turkey is particulate matter. This study aims to demonstrate Turkey's air quality in terms of particulate matter in the last 4 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this descriptive study, the public data of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network between the years 2016 and 2019 were analyzed for particulate matter (PM10). Stations with less than 75% data throughout the year were excluded from the evaluation while calculating the annual average values. The averages of the years were compared statistically with each other. RESULTS: For 111 stations that made sufficient measurements for 4 years, the annual median value of particulate matter remained constant in 12 stations (10.8%), increased in 26 stations (23.4%), and decreased in 73 stations (65.7%). The level of air pollution at 18 stations has been sustained for 4 years. It has been observed that there is no significant improvement in the criterion that the daily average PM10 level should not be higher than 50 µg/m³ for more than 35 days, and pollution is detected above the limit value permitted by the World Health Organization in all provinces and stations except a few provinces every year. Finally, during the 4-year observation, the number of stations that did not make sufficient measurements throughout the year has been found to increase over the years. CONCLUSION: Our data reveal that the air pollution attributable to particulate matter in Turkey between the years 2016 and 2019 did not regress prominently. On the contrary, air pollution has been found to gain permanency in certain provinces, and air quality monitoring has been inadequate due to insufficient measurement activities of some of the stations. AGE distribution , *DEMOGRAPHIC characteristics , *CONSUMER profiling , *POPULATION aging , *DISCOUNT houses (Retail trade) - Abstract
The share of organized retailing within the sector continues to increase. One of the most important elements of organized retailing is the discount markets that compete against both the traditional channel and the big players in the organized channel. This business model which met with the consumers in Turkey in the '90s has succeeded to spread among the country by reaching 30 thousand stores by the end of 2019. The purpose of this study is to explore the demographic profile of consumers who prefer discount markets, as well as to investigate why they prefer them. The data were collected by using quota sampling method to the 1.291 individuals who reside in Sakarya, Kocaeli, and İstanbul cities considering Turkey's population in terms of age and gender distribution. As a result of the study, the main reasons for the preference of discount markets were determined as price (42,84%), proximity (36,87%), and quality (14,87%). When this situation is examined specifically for each Store, it is seen that price is the second priority for Store X and Store Z customers in terms of reason for preference. In addition, similarities and differences in customer profiles of discount markets are revealed, as well as whether there are differences in the reasons for preferences according to demographic characteristics. Objective: The Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology is an important document for anaesthesiologists. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and experiences of anaesthesiologists in Turkey on the “Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety.” Methods: After the ethics committee approval and participants’ consent, electronic questionnaires were sent to anesthetists working in Turkey. The questionnaire included 48 questions. Results: The mean age of the participants was 44.28±8.01 years, and 52.1% were women (n=142). The mean time spent in the field of anesthesiology was 12.83±7.76 years. The percentage of participants working in private hospitals was 13.4%. A total of 58.5% of the participants were educated on patient safety out of whom 57% said that their knowledge was sufficient, 37.3% said that it was limited, and 5.6% felt that it was insufficient. The knowledge of participants about the Helsinki Declaration was sufficient in 31.7%, limited in 39.4%, insufficient in 9.2%, and 19.7% had no knowledge. A total of 27% of participants believed that implementation of the Helsinki Declaration improved patient safety. It has been stated that the minimum patient monitoring standards recommended by the European Board of Anaesthesiology has been complied in operating rooms and recovery units (90.8% and 78.2%, respectively). Conclusion: The findings of this survey might guide not only the individual anesthetists but also hospital administrators to develop strategies to improve patient safety and thus quality of care in the light of the recommendations listed in the Helsinki Declaration. Aims: Limited data about disease management strategies are available for pediatric patients with coronavirus disease-2019, particularly in Turkey. This study aimed to share the data on patients aged under 18 years in our country to be beneficial for understanding the disease course in children. Methods: A retrospective review of the medical records of pediatric patients aged under 18 years who were confirmed as coronavirus disease-2019 between March 11, and June 23, 2020, and were admitted to our hospitals was conducted. Results: A total of 220 pediatric patients with coronavirus disease-2019 were evaluated, of which 48.2% were boys, with a median age of 10 years, and 9.5% had underlying diseases. Patients were classified according to severity, with the percentages of asymptomatic, mild, moderate, and critical/severe cases determined to be 25.5%, 45%, 26.8%, and 2.7%, respectively. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was required in two patients (0.9%) and mechanical ventilation in three (1.4%). Targeted therapies were used in six patients (2.7%), with hydroxychloroquine being the most commonly used agent either alone (one patient) or in combination with favipiravir (five patients). Two patients (0.9%) died, and nine (4.1%) were still hospitalized during the study period. Conclusion: Although the disease course of coronavirus disease-2019 seems to be mild in children, critical illness is significant, and the treatment strategy primarily should consist of supportive care according to our preliminary observations. This paper attempts to open a critical discussion of Tekeli’s graduate course discussing active citizenship and participation in extension with the labor and work of young professionals (as architects/urban planners/urban designers) in our era of urban crisis. With this aim, the fragments of a fictional scenario—which was the final task of the course—are analyzed within a twofold framework: First, the paper elaborates that there are both formal and non-formal agents playing roles in the production of urban space and knowledge of urban space. Not only a variety of formal institutions but also civil organizations and initiatives have emerged considerably since the 2010s in Turkey. Hence, the labor in the production of urban space is pluralized by diversified agents. Secondly, I point out that our generation has been witnessing an era of urban crisis with multiple dimensions such as urban resistance and repression, anti-participatory aggressive production processes of urban space, exploitation of young professionals’ labor in parallel with unemployment, and the diminishing capacity of the profession. Through this twofold framework, I argue (and the fictional scenario accordingly ends in such a way) that young professionals could overcome the limits of the profession and generate new critical processes through prompting active citizenship and participation, including multiple actors of the production of urban space. This is the potential of the experiences of the last decade that we have just passed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to show the changes in the sexual function of the male patients who underwent ureterorenoscopic (URS) and who had JJ stent (DJS) because of ureteral calculi and their spouses before and after the procedure. Methods: The male patients and their spouses who were admitted to the Urology Outpatient Clinic of Eskişehir State Hospital between May and August 2018 due to unilateral ureteral stones were included in the study. In order to determine sexual life, all of the male patients filled the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) form while their spouses filled the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) form. The patients with DJS and their spouses completed the forms just before the removal of DJS while the patients without DJS and their spouses filled the same forms 4 weeks after the procedure. The patients who were applied DJS after the operation of URS were defined as the study group, the patients who were not applied DJS after the operation of URS were defined as the control group. Results: Thirty one (34.4%) of 90 males who participated in the study were included in the study group. Fifty nine males (65.6%) without DJS included in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference between preoperational and post-operational scores of the male patients and their spouses on the scales of IIEF and FSFI, respectively (p>0.05). There was statistically significant decreases in the postoperational total and subscale scores of the male patients on the IIEF scale and the female patients on the FSFI scale compared to their total and subscale pre-operational scores (p<0.001). Conclusion: The male patients should be informed about their sexual life before endo-urologic procedures while their spouses should be informed about their sexual life after the procedure. DJSs should not be inserted except unavoidable circumstances; if they are inserted, they should be removed as soon as possible for minimizing their effects on the sexual lives of couples. Bibliographic studies provide experience of a long time in a special field to the researchers in a systematic and regular manner. These studies make it easy for researchers to work in the field and see the future. This study, as a bibliographic one, firstly aims to categorize and evaluate the master's theses written in Kurdish departments. The study covers master's theses prepared between the Kurdish Language and Culture with Kurdish Language and Literature Department in 2011 and 2018 in Turkey. As the given period include no PhD studies in Turkey, in this study there is not any section addressed in doctorate dissertations. This bibliographic article deals with what kind of studies are done in which field and which subjects are given importance in the field of Kurdology. Moreover, at the end of this bibliography, the thesis studies are categorically classified according to their subjects and listed according to the authors' surnames-names. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DRUG side effects , *MEDICAL personnel , *ADVERSE health care events , *CONSUMER attitudes , *PUBLIC health - Abstract
Background: Consumers are more inclined than healthcare professionals (HCPs) to submit adverse drug reaction (ADR) reports, usually because of first-hand experience with an ADR. As consumer ADR reporting has led to important findings in other countries, the Turkish Pharmacovigilance Center (TUFAM) started accepting ADR reports directly from consumers. Objective: The purpose of this study was to, for the first time in Turkey, review and compare ADR reports from consumers and HCPs.Methods: We identified and evaluated all ADR reports that were submitted by TUFAM to VigiBase between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2016 and fulfilled minimum reporting criteria. Minimum reporting criteria required an identifiable reporter, an identifiable patient, at least one suspected active substance/drug and at least one suspected adverse reaction. We compared ADRs submitted by either consumers or HCPs with respect to the reported sex of patients, the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities preferred terms (PTs) used, designated medical event (DME) terms, the seriousness of the ADRs and the suspect drugs. Results: We analyzed 9150 spontaneous ADR reports that fulfilled the minimum reporting criteria. Of these, 3141 were submitted by consumers and 6009 were submitted by HCPs. Annual reporting rates (RRs) and the number of consumer ADR reports showed an increasing trend over time. The male:female ratio was 0.85 for consumer reports and 0.76 for HCP reports. In total, 12 of the 20 most frequently used PTs were identical for both consumers and HCPs. For ADRs classified as serious, consumers submitted 33.3% and HCPs submitted 52.2%. Consumers used only ten Designated Medical Event (DME) terms while HCPs used 35 DME terms out of a total of 62 DME terms at least once. Consumers most frequently reported ADRs to nervous system drugs, whereas HCPs most frequently reported ADRs to anti-infective drugs for systemic use. Consumers most frequently reported ADRs linked to gastrointestinal disorders, whereas HCPs most frequently reported ADRs linked to skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders. Conclusions: This is the first study to compare spontaneous ADR reports from consumers and HCPs in Turkey. Our analysis indicates the reporting of ADRs by both consumers and HCPs is increasing. We found not only similarities in the two groups regarding suspect drugs and classification terms used, but also prominent differences. Consumers and HCPs had 12 of the 20 most frequently used PTs in common, but the remaining eight PTs used by consumers differed from those used by HCPs. This probably reflects the effect an ADR can have on a consumer’s daily life. HCPs also reported more serious ADRs than did consumers. Consumer reports have a secondary contribution to ADR reporting, which might then be used to improve existing pharmacovigilance systems with the consumer’s perspective in mind. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ISLAM & politics , *ISLAMISTS , *NATION-state , *LIBERALISM , *MODERNITY , *NATIONALISM - Abstract
This article deals with the Islamist movement and its ideology throughout the process of modernization and analyzes the political discourse of the Islamists about a world of consumption and the Islamic lifestyle. The article depicts the course of the Islamist political discourse from the beginning. The political discourse of the Islamists showed variations depending on the changing domestic and foreign conjunctions. Developed through a defensive understanding in the final period of the Ottoman State, the discourse of the Islamist movement underwent further changes in the following periods, which was influenced by the internal conditions of the country and developments outside. As the Islamist movement has always adapted to modern political life, political and intellectual changes in the modern period caused the Islamist discourse to change politically and acquire an appropriate language for the new situation. CHILD labor , *POOR families , *POOR children , *SOCIAL systems , *SOCIAL policy - Abstract
The debates and commitments to reduce and eliminate child labour have remained on the social policy agenda since the second half of the 20th century. In recent years, significant reductions have been recorded, while maintaining the presence of child labour both on a global scale and in our country. Poverty and socioeconomic shocks play an important role in helping children to work. Poor families have to send their children to work to meet their basic needs and cope with uncertainty. Social protection systems, and in particular social protection bases, are used as a means of saving families from poverty and reducing child labour. The effects of the social protection floors practices in reducing child labour in world and Turkey are discussed in line with the Sustainable Development 2030 Agenda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CURRICULUM , *PHARMACY education , *GLOBALIZATION - Abstract
The aim of this study is to compare pharmacy faculties in Turkey in terms of their curriculums, within itself and with some of the European countries, compare the distribution of pharmacist employment and student/staff/pharmacists distributions with EU (European Union). With this information, this study intends to provide information to students, academicians, foreign students and foreign academicians, accreditation boards and interested parties about pharmacy education in Turkey. Internationalization of higher education increased rapidly during the last decades. Both developed and developing country universities especially give importance to internationalization. With its young population, Turkey has a great potential for student and academic mobility to attract foreign students and improve its higher education. After pharmacy education duration has been adopted to 5 years, 11 new faculties of pharmacy began providing education in Turkey, until 2013-2014 academic year. Disharmonization of curriculums may lead to restrict mobility of students between faculties of pharmacy in or out of the country. In this study, 21 Turkish faculties of pharmacy's curriculums have been examined and compared with the Pharmacy Education in Europe (Pharmine)'s classification. When comparing faculties of pharmacy's curriculums with each other; there have been a negative correlation between CHEMSCI (chemical sciences) and MEDISCI (medicinal and therapeutical sciences) course groups and some of the course groups not distributed normally. To benefit from internationalization of higher education, faculty of pharmacies in Turkey should be accredited at national and international level. Design of the curriculum is one of the main parts of accreditation, therefore it should be prepared carefully by bearing in mind the other pharmacy curriculums in and out of the country. ANIMAL experimentation , *ANXIETY , *BEHAVIOR , *BIOLOGICAL models , *PSYCHOLOGICAL stress - Abstract
This review focuses on the methods of study that investigated the anxiolytic effects o f new drugs with animal models. In a research setting, researchers investigate inquiry and recognition behavior changes of animals with anxiety in response to drug therapy. This forms the basis of a research. Although, “anxious” behaviors of rats do not exactly match the actual human behavior, they are still used as a model of human behavior. Several different stressor agents have been used including electric shocks, tilting the cage, olfactory bulbectomy, elevation of the setup, changing the lighting situation, under water trauma or exposure to predator materials. In these studies, generally the reaction to the stress is tested by observing the changes in the “anxious” behavior, cognitive impairment, fear and decreased social interaction. Frequently used models are; open field test, forced swimming test, social isolation, conflict tests, repeated stress test, tail suspension test, elevated maze tests, single prolonged test, chronical mild stress and predator scent tests. We explain various rat models and their properties and show how they are used to create anxiety with different stressor agents. Ease and repeatability of these models suggest that they are effective for studying drugs for the prevention and treatment of anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
