Aims: To determine the relationship between perception of COVID‐19, fear of COVID‐19 and self‐care management in individuals with chronic diseases during the pandemic process. Background: Individuals with chronic diseases are a sensitive group during the COVID‐19 pandemic process; it is thought that self‐care management may be adversely affected as a result of their more intense exposure to the psychological, physiological and economic effects of the pandemic. In the literature, there is no study examining the effect of perception of COVID‐19 and fear of COVID‐19 on self‐care management in individuals with chronic diseases. Design: Descriptive study. Methods: The study was conducted with 322 individuals who applied to the internal medicine outpatient clinics of a university's Health Practice and Research Center, met the inclusion criteria, agreed to participate in the study and had a chronic disease. Questionnaire form, Perception of COVID‐19 Scale (P‐COVID‐19), The Fear of COVID‐19 Scale (FCV‐19S) and Self‐Care Management Process in Chronic Illness Scale (SCMP‐G) were used to collect data. STROBE checklist was used to report the present study. Results: In the study, it can be stated that individuals with chronic diseases had a moderate to the high perception of contagiousness and dangerousness of COVID‐19, they had a moderate‐high level of fear of COVID‐19 and their self‐care care management was above moderate level. There was a significant positive correlation between P‐COVID‐19, FCV‐19S and SCMP‐G in the study. Conclusions: It was found that the perception of COVID‐19 contagiousness and the fear of COVID‐19 had a positive effect on the self‐care management of individuals with chronic diseases. Relevance to clinical practice: Determining the level of COVID‐19 perception and fear of COVID‐19 and their effects on the life of the individual, and evaluating self‐care management during the difficult pandemic process will increase the success in the holistic nursing care and management of chronic diseases. Objective Neonatal bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to drug-resistant pathogens are a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, data regarding the pathogens and their resistance profile are limited in developing countries. The aim of this study was to determine the bacteriological profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in neonatal BSI at a university hospital in Türkiye. Methods Medical records of neonates with suspected sepsis were retrospectively reviewed during the study period (between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020) for demographic data, blood culture, and antimicrobial susceptibility test results. Results During the study period, 117 BSI episodes were encountered in 106 neonates. The most common pathogen isolated was Staphylococcus epidermidis (n = 86, 73.5%), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 11, 9.4%). Methicillin resistance among staphylococci (77/93, 82.8%) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production among Enterobacterales (14/17, 82.4%) were common. Gentamicin resistance was detected in 70.1% (54/77) of methicillin-resistant staphylococci and 78.6% (11/14) of ESBL (+) Enterobacterales. Vancomycin and colistin resistance were not detected. Conclusion The high rate of resistant pathogens encountered in neonatal BSIs underline the importance of constant surveillance of the local pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, which is crucial for implementing appropriate therapy that could save lives and lower the burden of antimicrobial resistance. APPLIED linguistics ,FOREIGN language education ,EDUCATION research ,MULTICULTURALISM ,CULTURALLY relevant education - Abstract
This systematic review of 170+ journal articles showcases the current trends and developments in Turkey-based applied linguistics and language education research between 2016–2022. The current review presents similarities to the previous reviews (Alptekin & Tatar, 2011; Aydınlı & Ortaçtepe, 2018) in terms of trends and practices that indicate a vibrant research scene and a community of practice in Turkey within language education and applied linguistics research. While certain research areas such as instructional technologies remain widely popular among Turkey-based scholars, there has been growing interest in multiculturalism, social justice language education, critical pedagogy, and culturally responsive teaching. It was also clear in our analysis that the demands by the Higher Education Council for academic promotion exacerbated some of the already-existing challenges also noted in the previous reviews. Some of the concerns include pre- and post-test study designs that focus on practical concerns and outcomes rather than on processes that would lead to conceptual or theoretical development; and lack of engagement with broader (inter)disciplinary debates. We hope that this review will help establish conversations among fellow scholars in terms of future directions that applied linguistics and language education research in Turkey can take in order to contribute to the larger discussions in the field. Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive study is to determine the relationship between nurses' compassion level and emotional intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from a sample of 218 nurses who volunteered to participate. Data were collected using the descriptive information form, the compassion scale (CS), and the revised Schutte emotional intelligence scale (RSEIS). Findings: The nurses' total CS score was 97.51 ± 1, and their total RSEIS score was 152.1 ± 14.8. In our study, a moderate, positive, and significant relationship was found between nurses' compassion level and emotional intelligence levels. Conclusions: It was determined that nurses within the scope of the study had a high level of compassion and a medium–high level of emotional intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic process. Initiatives should be planned to develop emotional intelligence, which helps to minimize the negative effects of the pandemic on nurses and prevent negative emotions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this state-of-the-art review, we aim to build on Alptekin & Tatar's (2011) article covering research conducted in Turkey between 2005 and 2009, and survey published research in 31 Turkey-based journals between 2010 and 2016. As the second review paper on Turkey's English language teaching (ELT) agenda, our goal is twofold: first, to introduce the research of those researchers whose high-quality, Turkey-based work may not be known outside Turkish academia; and second, to point to recent scholarly developments that have occurred in Turkey and set these in the context of recent shifts in language teaching research worldwide. This paper presents approximately 140 articles that appeared in locally published peer-reviewed academic journals, and clearly demonstrates that Turkey as an English as a foreign language (EFL) context presents a vibrant research scene in language teaching. The reviewed works cover a wide spectrum of timely topics (e.g., computer-assisted language learning (CALL), the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL), language assessment, affective factors), and present findings that have much to contribute to current discussions in the field. Nevertheless, our review also reveals some concerning trends, including an almost exclusive emphasis on practical concerns over conceptual development; shortcomings in locating research within broader disciplinary debates; and few efforts to bring together and build on local research in a manner that might allow for original and creative influences on the broader discipline. It is therefore the further aim of this article to spark debates on these issues among Turkish scholars and contribute to the strengthening of the local disciplinary community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aims to retrospectively evaluate pediatric Guillain-Barré syndrome cases in a tertiary center in Istanbul, Turkey. Materials and Methods: The data of 40 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome who had been admitted to the Department of Pediatrics at the Istanbul University Medical Faculty between 2005 and 2011 were collected. Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: Mean patient age was 5.4 ± 3.0 years; 20 out of 40 patients (50%) were female and 20 (50%) were male. Preceding infection was detected in 32 cases (80%). Six patients had speech impairment. Out of eight patients with respiratory distress (20%), five required respiratory support (12.5%) of which three of them had speech impairment as well. According to nerve conduction studies, 21 patients (52.5%) had acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, 14 (35%) had acute motor axonal neuropathy, and five (12.5%) had acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy. Thirty-three patients (82.5%) received intravenous immunglobulin, 3 (7.5%) underwent plasmapheresis and 4 (10%) received both. Time until recovery (P = 0.022) and time until aided (P = 0.036) and unaided (P = 0.027) walking were longer in patients with acute gastrointestinal infection than in those with upper respiratory tract infection (P < 0.05). Time until response to treatment (P = 0.001), time until aided (P = 0.001) and unaided (P = 0.002) walking, and time until complete recovery (P = 0.002) were longer in acute motor axonal neuropathy cases as compared to acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy cases. Conclusion: Recovery was longer with acute gastrointestinal infection and acute motor axonal neuropathy. Speech impairment could be a clinical clue for the need of mechanical ventilation. Aim Quantitative changes of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma as an indicator for impending pre-eclampsia was reported in different studies. Cell-free fetal nucleic acids can be detected in maternal circulation during pregnancy. Our aim was to determine the higher rate of fetal DNA levels in maternal blood in pre-eclampsia compared to normal pregnancies and the clinical use of real-time polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) in the Turkish population as a marker. Material and Methods According to their gestational ages, the plasma levels of 30 pre-eclamptic women at 26-40 weeks of pregnancy were matched with 18 healthy pregnant women. Cell-free fetal DNA levels in maternal plasma were compared using real-time PCR technology. For the quantitative measurement of fetal DNA from maternal blood, the relative quantification PCR process was applied to all samples, using SRY and GAPDH genes. These patients were classified as pre-eclamptic and control groups and were matched according to weeks of pregnancy. Results Free fetal DNA levels of 30 pre-eclamptic patients were compared to healthy pregnant women and an average 3.06-fold increase was observed. During the second trimester, free fetal DNA levels were 1.5 times higher in pre-eclamptic patients. This increase was 3.5-fold during the third trimester. The DNA increase of pre-eclamptic patients was 4.1-fold and 3.4-fold during 29th-33rd and 34th-40th weeks, respectively. Conclusions Cell-free fetal DNA in maternal blood could be used as a marker for identifying subjects at increased risk of developing pre-eclampsia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The main object of the present study is to assess neuromotor development of high-risk infants by using three tests, and to determine inter-test concordance and the feasibility of these tests. Materials and Methods: One-hundred and nine patients aged between 0 and 6 months and identified as "high-risk infant" according to the Kliegman's criteria were enrolled to the study. Three different tests were used to assess neuromotor development of the patients: Bayley scales of infant development-II (BSID-II), Alberta infant motor scale (AIMS), and Milani Comparetti Motor Development Screening Test (MCMDST). Results: Correlation analysis was performed between pure scores of BSID-II motor scale and total scores of AIMS. These two tests were highly correlated (r:0.92). Moderate concordance was found between BSID-II and AIMS (k:0.35). Slight concordance was found between BSID-II and MCMDST; and the concordance was slight again for AIMS and MCMDST (k:0.11 and k:0.16, respectively) too. Conclusion: AIMS has a high correlation and consistency with BSID-II and can be used with routine neurological examination as it is based on observations, has few items, and requires less time to complete. The aim of this study was to demonstrate demographics of 39 consecutive Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 1 patients diagnosed genetically in a tertiary center between June 2006 and June 2009. There was history of consanguineous marriage in 27 (69%) patients. The average patient lifespan was 251 days (30-726 days). The average patient age at diagnosis was 129 days (33-297 days). A statistically significant correlation was found between the age at diagnosis and the lifespan ( p = 0.00). No significant correlation was found between the time spent in intensive care and the lifespan ( p = 0.43). Routine physical therapy was found to have no significant impact on the lifespan average ( p = 0.17). The cause of death in all of our patients was respiratory issues. Genetic counseling was given to 35 families. A second child with SMA was born in three out of the 14 families who declined prenatal diagnosis. Conclusion: A national program is needed in Turkey for SMA prevention and creation of expert teams for the management of these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the Turkish civil-military relations. Senior military officers evinced a desire to stay above politics and politicians in the sense both of remaining unsullied by them and of retaining control over them. In 1970, the military gravely disappointed left-wing revolutionary groups by deserting them and intervening in politics on the side of the center-right status quo and the Western alliance. Absolutism among the Turkish military appears to be in irreversible decline, and the gradualists seem to have won.

Purpose: Mutations of the α-1 subunit sodium channel gene (SCN1A) cause severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (SMEI). To date, over 300 mutations related to SMEI have been described. In the present study, we report new SCN1A mutations and the clinical features of SMEI cases. Materials and Methods: We studied the clinical and genetic features of nine patients diagnosed with SMEI at the Pediatric Neurology Department of Istanbul Medical Faculty. Results: Five patients had nonsense mutations, two had missense mutations, one had a splice site mutation and one had a deletion mutation of the SCN1A gene. Mutations at c.3705+5G splice site, p.trip153X nonsense mutation and deletion at c.2416_2946 have not been previously described. The seizures started following whole cell pertussis vaccination in all patients. The seizures ceased in one patient and continued in the other eight patients. Developmental regression was severe in three patients, with frequent status epilepticus. The type of mutation was not predictive for the severity of the disease. Two of the three patients with severe regression had nonsense and missense mutations. Conclusions: Dravet syndrome can be result of several different types of mutation in SCN1A gene. Onset of the seizures after pertussis vaccination is an important clue for the diagnosis and neuro- developmental delay should be expected in all patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is a comparative examination of human resource management (HRM) in Turkey, as an EU candidate country, and Hungary, as a recent member of the EU. After a brief review of the literature on the convergence and divergence debate in HRM, the similarities and differences in HRM in Turkey and Hungary are empirically investigated. In the research, HRM in the two countries is compared in four dimensions: the HR departments' structure; the top HR managers' characteristics and qualifications; the strategic nature of HRM; and HR practices. The research was conducted in the banking sector. In total 50 banks (32 banks from Turkey and 18 banks from Hungary) participated in the research with an overall response rate of 53%. The data obtained are analyzed via the Mann-Whitney U test. The results are descriptive in nature. Except for the differences observed, especially in HR departments' organizational structures, the findings provide evidence for convergence of HRM in the two countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To define clinical features of patients with alternating hemiplegia of childhood. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical presentation and course of the disease in patients diagnosed between January 2003 and December 2008 at the Pediatric Neurology Department of the Istanbul Medical Faculty. Results: The nine patients had a mean age of 6.6 months (2-15 months) at the onset of symptoms. Paroxysmal eye movements were the early symptom of five patients. All patients had recurrent alternating hemiplegic episodes and relief of symptoms while sleeping. Duration of events varied widely from few minutes to several days and was associated with slowly progressive neurological deterioration. Flunarizine might decrease frequency of events but is not effective to neurological deterioration. Amantadine as an alternative agent is used in add-on therapy, but epileptogenic side effect prevented the evaluation of long-term efficacy. Conclusion: Trials on new agents like amantadine are necessary for more effective control of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To identify the frequency of epilepsy and whether the association of epilepsy with clinical and neuroimaging findings in children with presumed perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PPAIS). We performed a retrospective analysis of 37 children with PPAIS followed-up at a tertiary referral center between January 1, 2000, and October 31, 2016. Clinical data including demographic features, age at onset of symptoms and seizures, initial clinical presentation, epilepsy features, used antiepileptic drugs, and thrombophilia screening results were abstracted from medical records. Brain magnetic resonance imaging scans were assessed for infarct laterality, location and affected brain regions. The median age of the patients was 12 years (range 2–17.9 years) at last assessment. The initial symptom of PPAIS was early hand preference in 33 children (89%) and seizure in 4 children (11%). A total of 20 children (54%) developed epilepsy at a median age of 0.9 years. There were two peaks of epilepsy onset in infancy and adolescence. Fifteen children (41%) had focal epilepsy and 5 children (14%) had epileptic spasms. Twelve out of 20 children (60%) with epilepsy had drug resistant epilepsy. Cortical involvement was a statistically significant predictor of epilepsy (p = 0.021, relative risk 4.4, 95% confidence interval 0.7–27.7). More than half of the children with PPAIS suffered from epilepsy during childhood, of whom developed drug resistant epilepsy in majority. Children with cortical lesion may have a higher risk to develop epilepsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of this study is to assess the results of inspections in the last three years of drug abuse testing in medical laboratories according to the latest regulations in Turkey. The on-site inspections of medical laboratories for drugs abuse testing performed in Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Centers during 2014-2016 are described, and laboratory processes and performance evaluated. The performance of 35 laboratories in 2014, 62 laboratories in 2015, and 94 laboratories in 2016 were scored as the sum of the scores for all answers on the inspection form. An inspected laboratory was considered to have an unconformity if the total score was less than 2/3 of maximum score. The total scores of inspections and the number of laboratories with between years were compared using one-way analysis of variance and slope Chi-square for trend test, respectively. Total scores increased statistically significantly from 35.9 ± 16.2 in 2014, to 43.5 ± 16.3 in 2015 and 49.1 ± 1.3 in 2016 (p < 0.001). The laboratories with unconformities decreased statistically significantly from 57% in 2014 to 37% in 2015 and 22% in 2016 (p < 0.001). The published legislation and the inspections contributed to national standardization and improved quality of service in medical laboratories for drug abuse testing., (© 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)
