Objective: Attitudes of medical faculty students toward ageism are an important issue in terms of public health. In Turkey, there is not enough study to attract attention to ageism. In this study, it was aimed to determine some factors related to the attitudes of the first and last year students of Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine toward the elderly in the 2017-2018 academic year. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the data of 468 (71.6%) students studying in the first and last years were analyzed. As a data collection tool, a sociodemographic questionnaire and Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS) were used. The dependent variable of the study was the attitude toward ageism, independent variables were age, gender, grade, economic situation, family structure, the condition of staying with the elderly before and currently, and willingness to care for the elderly. Results: The average age of participants was 21.8±3.0 years, 51.0% were first grade and 51.5% were women. The total AAS score of the students was 84.9±8.8, the restricting the life of the elderly was 36.8±4.3, the positive ageism score was 30.3±5.0, and the negative ageism score was 17.8±3.0. The AAS total score and the restricting the life of the elderly score were significantly higher in women and last grade students (p<0.05). Conclusion: To develop students' attitudes toward the elderly in a positive way, elderly health and old age lessons should be included in the curriculum and students should be provided with spending time with the elderly. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine early cancer detection/screening behaviors of individuals and the influencing factors. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted in the center of Trabzon, Turkey. The study population comprised a total of 105.071 individuals aged ≥40 years living in the city center, and the sample size was determined as 1.200. To collect the data, a questionnaire form was used, and a chi-squared test and logistic regression were used to evaluate them. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 54.90±11.16 years. A total of 16.1% had a fecal occult blood test (FOBT), and 15.2% underwent colonoscopy. A total of 45.3% of women had a breast self-examination (BSE), 22.7% had clinical breast examination (CBE), 14.3% had mammography, 29.2% had a Pap smear, and 15.8% of men had a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. The effective variables on screening behaviors were found as the age, education level, health insurance, cancer history in first-degree relatives for BSE; income, monthly income, first-degree death from cancer for CBE; health assurance, first-degree relative death from cancer for mammography; age, cancer history in first-degree relatives for the Pap smear test; age, gender, income for FOBT; age, income, the place where the individuals lived the longest, first-degree relative death from cancer for colonoscopy; and cancer history in first-degree relatives and first-degree relative death from cancer for PSA. CONCLUSION The participants were determined to have low screening tests/examinations. Health literacy plays a critical role in chronic disease self-management. This study aimed to determine the relation between health literacy levels, hypertension awareness and control among primary-secondary school teachers in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional research was conducted among school teachers with the participation of 500 volunteer teachers of both genders. The response rate was 86.2%. To determine health literacy levels, the Newest Vital Sign Scale and Blood Pressure Concept Test were used. Results: The mean scores of all individuals were 2.12 ± 1.82 over six points although this showed 'limited' levels of health literacy. The mean scores obtained from the scale were 2.13 ± 1.83 in non-hypertensives, while it was 2.06 ± 1.77 in hypertensives. Nonetheless, disease knowledge and awareness were low in teachers. Adequate health literacy levels were low according to disease awareness and control. The measured health literacy levels of teachers didn't overlap with their own assessments about health literacy skills. Recommendations: Limited health literacy levels in educators gave an impression that our education system was poor in terms of health education programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, in Turkey, there has been an increase in the number of violent acts against healthcare workers, towards doctors in particular. This study aimed to investigate the extent of violence, the causes of violence and to evaluate proposed solutions to violence. Out of 597 physicians, 86.4% indicated that they were exposed to at least one type of violence (physical, verbal, sexual) throughout their careers. Among the physicians participating in the study, 27.5% suffered physical threats and 68.6% suffered verbal violence in the past year. Only 40.4% reported the physical violence to their institution. Physicians indicated that the top three causes of violent behavior were excessive demands of patients, the expectation that the issue will be solved immediately and blaming physicians for their problems. To stop violence against themselves, physicians need to raise their voices, along with those of their personal or professional organizations, and should report and follow up incidents. The aim of this study is to determine the attitudes and behaviors of religious scholars regarding organ donation and transplantation. In this study, 540 officials working in the Department of Religious Affairs in Kayseri, Turkey, were included. Overall, 86.6% response rate ( n = 468) was achieved. Although a majority of the officials of religion in this study stated that they believed in the importance of organ donation (90.8%), the rate of considering donation (57.9%) and the donation rate (1.1%) were found to be substantially low. There is a difference between the employment status and willingness to donate organs. The rate of willingness to donate was significantly high in men than women. And also was high in imams and preachers. Regarding the sources of information, the majority of the respondents (70.0%) cited mass media. Overall, 15.3% cited school education and 42.0% religious publications. The most common question (83.1%) that was asked was 'whether or not organ donation was suitable for Muslim religious'. Our study revealed that although the research groups have positive ideas about organ donation and transplantation, their role was low in informing and motivating people about organ donation and transplantation. AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the adult's perspective about family medicine and the status of service utilization. METHOD: This descriptive study was conducted on 485 adults aged 18 and over in the city center of Kayseri Province. RESULTS: The mean age of the study sample was 41.9±14.3 and 46.4% of the sample was male. Of the group, 50.1% of them thought that they had enough knowledge about family medicine practices. When family members or they have any health problem 49.7% of them usually prefer their family physicians. 23.9% of the study group didn't know if they had the right to choose and change their family physicians. The rate of people who had already changed their family physician was 12, 0% and 9.5% of them intended to change. The proportion of the women who knew their "family medicine personnel" was 27.2%, only 12.4% of them stated that they had been visited at home. The rate of the people who had found the family medicine practice as "successful" was 61.8 % and also 83.1 % mentioned that it is an appropriate health care system for our country. When the utilization status of 1693 family members from family physicians; the application rate was found to be 76.3%. This rate is significantly high in women, old age people and children. CONCLUSION: We found that people don't prefer family medicine as a place of first application although they have more or less knowledge about family medicine. AIM: Impairment and disability and handicap are most important problems all the world. This survey was conducted in centre of Kayseri province to obtain the prevalence of impairment, disability and handicap. METHOD: The survey also aimed to identify the causes of impairments and to analyse the nature and extent of the handicaps resulting from these impairments. WHO's impairment, disability and handicap classification was used and it was applied to those living in dwellings located in districts selected according to the population. RESULTS: 3443 person residing selected using a multistage cluster sampling method were screened. It was found that 10.5% of the population had impairment and 5.0% of the population had a disability and 4.2% of them had a handicapped. The prevalence of impairment, disability and handicap was higher in women (12.7-6.3-5.6%) than men (8.3-3.6-3.4%). CONCLUSION: Result of this study estimated, the educational and social levels were low among all the disables Educational problems and rehabilitation requirements were the major problems. A high proportion of person with impairment and handicap were not given any rehabilitation services. So that, the results of our study shows us that we have to give more importance to disables educational and occupational problems in our country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was planned in order to make good the lack of information about population-based data on the prevalence of brucellosis in the Kayseri region. This cross-sectional research was performed on 1850 individuals living in the rural region around Kayseri. People aged 15-85 in 9 districts in this rural areas were interviewed and blood samples were screened using the Rose Bengal Agglutination test. The overall prevalence of brucellosis was 3.4%. Although the rate was higher in females (3.7%) than in males (2.9%), there was no significant difference. The lowest prevalence (2.0%) was observed in the 25-34 age group, and the highest prevalence (4.3% and 4.1%) were in the 35-44 and 15-24 age groups, respectively. The highest prevalence was observed in the illiterate group. The prevalence was much higher among people in close contact with sheep and/or cattle, those making home made cheese, butter and cream and also in those who consumed butter and cream. It was concluded that although the seroposivity rate is low in Turkey, health education and screening of people in rural areas is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The awareness of health professionals about breast cancer prevention is of vital importance, since their beliefs and behaviors may have a major impact on other women. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge, and attitudes regarding risk factors for breast cancer as well as screening such as breast self-examination, clinical breast examination and mammography among different groups of female health professionals. In this cross- sectional study, 444 female health professionals in various health centers located in Corum Province, Turkey, were interviewed using a self-administered questionnaire. The mean age was 33.1 ± 6.1 and most were married (81.3%). The rate of feeling under risk regarding breast cancer among female health personnel was 31.3%. The majority (98.4 %) perceived breast self-examination as a beneficial method for the early detection of breast cancer. Although 81.3 % of the participants stated that they did breast self examination, only 27.3 % reported doing so on a regular basis (performed monthly or once per menstrual cycle). The most common reason for not doing breast self-examination was the belief that it was not necessary (45.8 %). Of the entire group, the rate of having a mammography was 10.1% and the rate of clinical breast examination was 24.8%. Health professionals are a direct source of medical information to the public. The use of breast self-examination and mammography was found lower than expected when considering the fact that participants were health care professionals.
