Abstract

Highlights: [•] We infer the colonization history of finches to Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island. [•] Melanodera (Patagonia) is the closest relative to Nesospiza (Tristan) and Rowettia (Gough). [•] Melanodera typically was sister to Rowettia, but some genes linked it to Nesospiza. [•] There was no evidence that Rowettia and Nesospiza are sister taxa. [•] The South Atlantic finches thus evolved from separate colonization events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
