Objective: To discuss the effects of acupuncture combining with Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (Peach Kernel and Carthamus Four Substances Decoction) washing on nerve conduction velocity, Toronto score and glycolipid metabolism in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Methods: A total of 60 cases of diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients were selected in this study. The selected patients were assigned into the western medicine group and the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment group randomly. There were 30 cases in the western medicine group (n = 30), and 30 cases in the TCM treatment group (n = 30). Patients in the western medicine group were treated with intramuscular injection of Vitamin B1 for Injection and Adenosine Cobamamide for Injection. Patients in the TCM treatment group were treated with acupuncture on the base of routine treatment in the western medicine group. The selected acupoints include ST36 (Zusanli), SP6 (Sanyinjiao), SP10 (Xuehai), LI11 (Quchi), GB34 (Yanglingquan), EX-B3 (Weiwanxiashu) and RN6 (Qihai). After needles inserted into the acupoints, it should give even supplementation and drainage manipulation method until there was sensation of qi arrival. Then, after there was sensation of qi arrival, the needles should be retained and time needle retention was about 20 min. The acupuncture treatment should be given once a day, and consecutive 5 days of treatment in a week. After the 5-day treatment, patients should take rest for 2 days. One course of treatment included 4 weeks. The patients should be treated for 2 courses of treatment in all. At the same time, patients in the TCM treatment group should take four limbs washing treatment by using self-made Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (Peach Kernel and Carthamus Four Substances Decoction). The Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (Peach Kernel and Carthamus Four Substances Decoction) Chinese medicinal washing treatment also should be given once a day, and consecutive 5 days of treatment in a week. After the 5-day treatment, patients should take rest for 2 days. One course of treatment included 4 weeks. The patients should be treated for 2 courses of treatment in all. After treatment, the changes of nerve conduction velocity, Toronto score, glycolipid metabolism and curative effect of patients in the two groups were compared. Results: After treatment, total effective rate of the western medicine group and the TCM treatment group were 93.33 and 70.00%, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, nerve conduction velocity, Toronto scores, glycolipid metabolism of patients in the two groups obviously improved comparing with those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). After treatment, the nerve conduction velocity, Toronto score, fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) of patients in the TCM treatment group improved significantly comparing with those of patients in the western medicine group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The curative effect of acupuncture combining with Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (Peach Kernel and Carthamus Four Substances Decoction) washing treatment was significant in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The therapeutic method is worthy of clinical popularization and application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
