The article describes the violent events that occurred in East Timor and offers insight on why attempts at justice have failed and why the leadership favors reconciliation over retribution, despite popular preference for accountability. According to the author, violent events plagued the region following the withdrawal of United Nation (UN) peacekeepers in 2005. However, its new prime minister, Jose Ramos-Horta, who is also a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, restored hope as he promised to restore political stability.
