The increase in intense tropical cyclone (TC) activity across the western North Pacific (WNP) has often been attributed to a warming ocean. However, it is essential to recognize that the tropical WNP region already boasts high temperatures, and a marginal increase in oceanic warmth due to global warming does not exert a significant impact on the potential for TCs to intensify. Here we report that the weakened vertical wind shear is the primary driver behind the escalating trend in TC intensity within the summer monsoon trough of the tropical WNP, while local ocean surface and subsurface thermodynamic factors play a minor role. Through observational diagnoses and numerical simulations, we establish that this weakening of the vertical wind shear is very likely due to the increase in temperature of the Tibetan Plateau. With further warming of the Tibetan Plateau under the Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 scenario, the projected TCs will likely become stronger. The weakened vertical wind shear is the primary driver behind increasing tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific monsoon trough. This study finds that the observed decrease in winter–spring Tibetan Plateau snow depth since 2000 has played an important role in weakening the correlation between rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Tibetan Plateau snow depth modulates convective activity through changes in the South Asian high. Increased Tibetan Plateau snow depth promotes basinwide tropical Indian Ocean cooling in spring through a Gill-type response. In the following seasons, downward latent heat flux anomalies associated with a weaker monsoon circulation contributes to warm SST anomalies over the western tropical Indian Ocean, thus favoring a positive phase of the Indian Ocean dipole. This evolution of tropical Indian Ocean SSTs associated with anomalously high Tibetan Plateau snow depth potentially weakens the relationship between rapidly intensifying tropical cyclone frequency and spring tropical Indian Ocean SSTs. When the effect of Tibetan Plateau snow depth is removed via partial correlation analysis, we find a significant relationship between spring tropical Indian Ocean SSTs and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones as well as corresponding large-scale environmental factors. The results of this study enhance understanding of changes in tropical cyclone intensity and have implications for seasonal forecasting of tropical cyclone intensity over the western North Pacific basin. The upper Yellow River basin over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important ecological barrier in northwestern China. Effective LULC products that enable the monitoring of changes in regional ecosystem types are of great importance for their environmental protection and macro-control. Here, we combined an 18-class LULC classification scheme based on ecosystem types with Sentinel-2 imagery, the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, and the random forest method to present new LULC products with a spatial resolution of 10 m in 2018 and 2020 for the upper Yellow River Basin over the TP and conducted monitoring of changes in ecosystem types. The results indicated that: (1) In 2018 and 2020, the overall accuracy (OA) of LULC maps ranged between 87.45% and 93.02%. (2) Grassland was the main LULC first-degree class in the research area, followed by wetland and water bodies and barren land. For the LULC second-degree class, the main LULC was grassland, followed by broadleaf shrub and marsh. (3) In the first-degree class of changes in ecosystem types, the largest area of progressive succession (positive) was grassland–shrubland (451.13 km2), whereas the largest area of retrogressive succession (negative) was grassland–barren (395.91 km2). In the second-degree class, the largest areas of progressive succession (positive) were grassland–broadleaf shrub (344.68 km2) and desert land–grassland (302.02 km2), whereas the largest areas of retrogressive succession (negative) were broadleaf shrubland–grassland (309.08 km2) and grassland–bare rock (193.89 km2). The northern and southwestern parts of the study area showed a trend towards positive succession, whereas the south-central Huangnan, northeastern Gannan, and central Aba Prefectures showed signs of retrogressive succession in their changes in ecosystem types. The Chuan-Dian Rhombus Block is the main channel for materials escaping southeastward from the Tibetan Plateau. Verifying the extent of the lower crustal flow and its impact on the lithospheric deformation, isostatic state, and seismicity in the Chuan-Dian Rhombus Block is of vital importance. Based on data from the China Seismic Experimental Site, the current study analyzes the rheological structure of the eastern boundary of the Chuan-Dian Rhombus Block (i.e., the Xianshuihe–Xiaojiang Fault System). The results reveal a low-viscosity zone of 1020 Pa∙s, with a thickness of approximately 20 km in the middle–lower crust beneath the Xianshuihe fault. The low-viscosity zone extends southward and gradually thins until it basically disappears at the Xiaojiang fault. Our results indicate that the extent of the lower crustal flow is restricted in the Xianshuihe fault and the northernmost part of the Anninghe–Zemuhe fault and does not extend to the Xiaojiang fault. The crust of the Xianshuihe fault is notably thickened and in an isostatic disequilibrium state. The Xiaojiang fault maintains a relatively thick seismogenic layer and isostatic equilibrium. • A 20-km-thick low-viscosity zone is revealed beneath Xianshuihe fault. • Xianshuihe fault features a low rheological strength and nonisostasy. • Low viscosity in mantle beneath Xiaojiang fault is due to deep material migration. • Lower crustal flow concentrates in Xianshuihe and Anninghe–Zemuhe faults. Seed germination is a crucial stage in the life history of a species because it represents the pathway from adult to offspring, and it can affect the distribution and abundance of species in communities. In this study, we examined the effects of phylogenetic, life history and environmental factors on seed germination of 134 common species from an alpine/subalpine meadow on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. In one-way ANOVAs, phylogenetic groups (at or above order) explained 13.0% and 25.9% of the variance in germination percentage and mean germination time, respectively; life history attributes, such as seed size, dispersal mode, explained 3.7%, 2.1% of the variance in germination percentage and 6.3%, 8.7% of the variance in mean germination time, respectively; the environmental factors temperature and habitat explained 4.7%, 1.0% of the variance in germination percentage and 13.5%, 1.7% of the variance in mean germination time, respectively. Our results demonstrated that elevated temperature would lead to a significant increase in germination percentage and an accelerated germination. Multi-factorial ANOVAs showed that the three major factors contributing to differences in germination percentage and mean germination time in this alpine/subalpine meadow were phylogenetic attributes, temperature and seed size (explained 10.5%, 4.7% and 1.4% of the variance in germination percentage independently, respectively; and explained 14.9%, 13.5% and 2.7% of the variance in mean germination time independently, respectively). In addition, there were strong associations between phylogenetic group and life history attributes, and between life history attributes and environmental factors. Therefore, germination variation are constrained mainly by phylogenetic inertia in a community, and seed germination variation correlated with phylogeny is also associated with life history attributes, suggesting a role of niche adaptation in the conservation of germination variation within lineages. Ecological security is a critical guarantor of human security and indeed human survival and is closely associated with sustainable development. Yet exploration of ecological security assessment in alpine pastoral regions is lacking, and many studies have failed to perform validation analyses on ecological security assessment results, weakening the reliability of their assessment results. In this study, an ecosystem health-risk-services framework is developed to assess the ecological security of the Gannan alpine pastoral region (GAPR) on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau from 2000 to 2020. Then, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and high-resolution images are then introduced to verify and compare the results' reliability. Our study results indicate: (1) The assessment framework can better reflect the actual ecological security state in GAPR, and the correlation coefficient (R 2) of the comprehensive ecological security index (CESI) and RSEI is between 0.426 and 0.555 (p < 0.001). (2) The CESI value of GAPR shows a fluctuating and increasing trend from 2000 to 2020, with a spatial distribution pattern of high values in the south and low values in the north. The ecological security levels in GAPR are dominated by medium, medium-high and high security levels. (3) The centers of gravity of low and medium-low security levels show a northward movement trend, while that of medium-high and high security levels show a southward movement. Our framework provides a new perspective for ecological security assessment methods, which can be extended to other regions, and the results contribute useful references to decision-makers for socioeconomic development and eco-environmental protection in GAPR. The water level of Lake Qinghai, the largest lake on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, has increased continuously, at an average speed of 0.21 m per year since 2005, causing a rapid expansion of the lake area. We investigated the hydrological processes of Lake Qinghai and the surrounding watershed that have influenced water level and lake area from 1956 to 2019. Relationships among water level, climate change and human activities were also assessed. Water level and lake area were positively correlated with precipitation and runoff into the lake, and negatively correlated with evaporation. Climate change factors including precipitation and runoff were the primary causes of lake level change, whereas human activities, including variation in a human footprint index, land use, and grassland irrigation, were secondary factors. A time series model forecasted that from 2020 to 2050 water levels will increase further by 2.45 m. Although this increase in water level may have some benefits, such as reduced local desertification, the expansion of lake area will continue to flood low beaches, pasture lands, near shore infrastructure and roads, and impact tourism locations. However, continued water level rise may also have negative ecological effects, such as reduce habitat of seasonal birds and reduced water quality due to erosion and sediment resuspension in shallow nearshore lake areas. Local stakeholders, government authorities, and scientists should give greater attention to anticipated changes in water level, and further ecological studies and infrastructure adaptation measures should be implemented. • The climate change, human activities and hydrological processes in the Lake Qinghai Basin were studied. • The trend of the water level for the future 30 years were predicted. • Climate change dominated the water level variation in the Lake Qinghai. • The ecological and environmental effects by the rising water level were emphasized.
