Actual evapotranspiration constitutes a vital component of the exchange of energy and water vapour between the soil‐vegetation and atmospheric systems on terrestrial terrain. Nevertheless, the Tibetan Plateau, owing to its austere environmental conditions, harbours a scarcity of terrestrial monitoring stations. This circumstance presents a formidable challenge in attaining precise estimations of actual evapotranspiration. The complementary relationship method is a potential approach because it requires only routine meteorological data to estimate actual evapotranspiration on a regional or global scale. However, the suitability of the complementary relationship model across diverse ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau necessitates further investigation. In this study, we scrutinized the simulation of daily and monthly actual evapotranspiration across 18 observation sites spanning eight distinct land use categories on the Tibetan Plateau. We employed the polynomial generalized complementary function introduced by Brutsaert (B2015), alongside its enhanced rendition proposed by Szilagyi (S2017) and Crago (C2018). The outcomes reveal that all three models adeptly replicate the fluctuations in actual evapotranspiration, irrespective of land use category or temporal scale—whether daily or monthly. This is true regardless of whether original or calibrated parameter values are applied. However, there exist significant variations in the performance of these models. In general, the C2018 model demonstrates superior performance across most ecosystems when original parameters are employed. Following parameter calibration, the simulation efficacy of the models experienced marked enhancement. Post parameter calibration, the B2015 model outperforms the other two models notably in desert and wetland environments. Furthermore, the simulation outputs from all three models display heightened sensitivity to parameter α, particularly in the context of the C2018 and S2017 models. These findings suggest that accurate estimation of parameter values is critical to improving the accuracy of estimating actual evapotranspiration. Remote sensing precipitation products provide rich data for ungauged basins. Evaluating the accuracy and detection capability of remote sensing precipitation products is crucial before application. In this study, an index system in terms of quantitative differences, capturing capacity and precipitation distribution was constructed to evaluate three precipitation products, TRMM 3B42 V7, GPM IMERGE Final and CMORPH V1.0, at various temporal and spatial scales on the Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2016. The results show that the correlations among the three products were larger at the monthly scale than at the annual scale. The lowest correlations between the products and observation data were found in December. GPM performed the best at the monthly and annual scales. Particularly, the GPM product presented the best capability of detection of both precipitation and non-precipitation events among the three products. All three precipitation products overestimated 0.1~1 mm/day precipitation, which occurred most frequently. An underestimation of precipitation at 10~20 mm/day was observed, and this intensity accounted for the majority of the precipitation. All three precipitation products showed an underestimation in terms of the annual maximum daily precipitation. The accuracy of the same product varied in different regions of the Tibetan Plateau, such as the south, the southeast, eastern–central region and the northeast, and there was a certain clustering of the accuracies of neighboring stations. The uplift of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) dramatically changed the topography and climate of Asia and affected the biodiversity of the plateau and its adjacent areas. However, the effects of the uplift on the dispersal, differentiation and adaptation of plants remain a puzzle when the date and processes of the uplift cannot be determined with certainty and the impacts of the Quaternary glaciations on plants on the QTP are unknown. To clarify the relationships among plants on the QTP with the plateau uplift and the Quaternary glaciations, the cpDNA trnT- trnF regions of 891 individuals from 37 populations of Hippophae tibetana, endemic to the QTP, were sequenced in the present study. A total of 50 haplotypes were found and a strong phylogeographic structure was revealed ( NST = 0.854, GST = 0.611, NST > GST, P < 0.01). The results show that three main lineages of the present populations of H. tibetana occupy the western, the middle, and the eastern geographical range, respectively, and their divergence time dates back to 3.15 Ma before present. Of 50 haplotypes, 33 (66%) are private haplotypes, which are restricted to single populations. These private haplotypes are scattered throughout the present geographical range of H. tibetana and originated from multiple differentiations in many lineages during more than 1.0 Ma period, strongly suggesting that multiple microrefugia of H. tibetana existed throughout the present geographical range during the last glacial maximum (LGM) and even earlier glaciations. Additionally, the average elevation of present populations is over 4500 m in the west and the equilibrium-line of glaciers in the LGM was 500–300 m lower than present in the major interior part of the plateau suggesting that at most sites in the west, LGM microrefugia of H. tibetana may have been above 4000 m above sea level, the highest of all known refugia. Moreover, the divergence times among and within the three lineages and their distinct distributions as well as dispersal barriers support the theory of the recent and rapid uplift of the QTP. The rapid uplift of the plateau within the last 3.4 Ma and the associated environmental changes may have affected the dispersal and differentiation of H .tibetana and shaped its phylogeographic structure. • Permafrost has a stronger influence on runoff process than seasonally frozen ground. • Soil warming trends show a turning point around 4800 m in the permafrost region. • A longer freezing zero-curtain period often leads to discontinuous runoff recession. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a region rich in extensive frozen ground and the source of many major Asian rivers. However, how soil freeze/thaw (F/T) dynamics influence runoff production at the catchment scale in the TP is poorly understood. This study employs a process-based permafrost hydrology model with a new soil parameterization to investigate soil F/T dynamics and their impact on runoff in a TP permafrost watershed, i.e., the source region of Yangtze River (SRYR). The revised model separates soil evaporation and plant transpiration, and accounts for the influence of soil gravel and organic carbon content, as well as variation in saturated hydraulic conductivity along the soil profile. Validation results demonstrate that the revised model accurately simulates daily soil temperature (mean RMSE of 1.3 °C), soil moisture (mean ubRMSE of 0.05 cm3 cm−3), and runoff discharge (NSE = 0.82). The results reveal different altitudinal patterns of warming trend between permafrost and seasonally frozen ground (SFG). Warming rates in SFG area increase monotonously with elevation, while a turning point is observed in permafrost region around 4800 m. With active layer deepening, deep-soil water content increases but primarily replenishes soil water storage rather than directly contributing to runoff recharge, while rootzone and the middle part of the active layer become drier. Soil F/T cycles in the permafrost region exert stronger influences on runoff process compared to SFG. Delayed soil thaw onset generally results in higher spring runoff coefficient, while delayed soil freeze onset is related to slower runoff recession. The freezing zero-curtain period is likely to impact the continuity of runoff recession processes by affecting the connectivity of groundwater flow channels. These findings uncover the regulatory mechanisms of soil F/T dynamics on runoff production and river discharge characteristics, providing a fundamental basis for predicting permafrost hydrology responses to future climate change in the TP.
