This article provides an overview of a snow avalanche that took place in Tibet on January 17, 2023. The avalanche occurred unexpectedly near the Duoxiongla Tunnel on the Pai-Mo highway, burying approximately 7 km of the road and causing a three-day blockage. The avalanche was particularly significant due to its magnitude and impact, which were unprecedented in the region. The causes of the avalanche included heavy snowfall, temperature fluctuations, snow and ice melt, and strong winds. The article emphasizes the importance of prioritizing measures to prevent and mitigate avalanches on roads in the future. It also highlights the need for enhanced monitoring and early warning systems, the establishment of refuge points in secure areas, and the improvement of scientific knowledge and awareness regarding snow avalanche prevention.
