Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are crucial parameters reflecting soil C and N sequestration. Concerns about how artificial activities disturb alpine meadow ecosystem are increasing, but the knowledge of variances in microbial CUE and NUE in response to turf storage remains scarce. Here, we conducted a turf storage experiment on the Tibetan Plateau with two common storage methods, laying turfs method (LT) and stacking turfs method (ST). Plant litter, aboveground and belowground biomass declined considerably in the LT and ST than those in natural meadow. Soil pH and available phosphorus were significantly lower, but soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and available nitrogen were substantially higher in stored turfs (both ST and LT) than in natural meadow. These results led to a differentiation in nutrient status among treatments. Vetor model indicated a stronger C limitation (vector length > 0.61) in ST than that in the LT and a shift from N to P limitation (vector angle >55°) in all stored turfs. Microbial CUE was prominently higher in the LT than those in the ST, signifying that microbes allocated more exogenous C to self-growth in the LT. Microbial NUE declined considerably in stored turfs, indicating a great proportion of N used for catabolic process instead of anabolic process. Microbial CUE and NUE were tightly linked to nutrient content and availability, enzymatic stoichiometry, microbial traits and plant biomass. Rapid social-economic development introduces modern lifestyles into rural areas, not only bringing numerous modern products but also new pollutants, such as chlorinated paraffins (CPs). The rural Tibetan Plateau has limited industrial activities and is a unique place to investigate this issue. Herein we collected 90 free-range chicken egg pool samples across the rural Tibetan Plateau to evaluate the pollution status of CPs. Meanwhile, CPs in related soils, free-range chicken eggs from Jiangxi, and farmed eggs from markets were also analyzed. The median concentrations of SCCPs (159 ng g -1 wet weight (ww)) and MCCPs (1390 ng g -1 ww) in Tibetan free-range chicken eggs were comparable to those from Jiangxi (259 and 938 ng g -1 ww) and significantly higher than those in farmed eggs (22.0 and 81.7 ng g -1 ww). In the rural Tibetan Plateau, the median EDI of CPs via egg consumption by adults and children were estimated to be 81.6 and 220.2 ng kg -1 bw day -1 for SCCPs and 483.4 and 1291 ng kg -1 bw day -1 for MCCPs, respectively. MCCPs might pose potential health risks for both adults and children in the worst scenario. Our study demonstrates that new pollutants should not be ignored and need further attention in remote rural areas.

Microbial fermentation, a key step in Tibetan tea production, plays a pivotal role in forming the tea's unique quality. In our study, we mapped out the landscapes of major components, metabolomic signatures, and microbial features of Tibetan tea using component content determination, untargeted metabolomic analysis, and ITS and 16S rRNA sequencing. The results reveal that theabrownin content demonstrated a consistent growth trend post-fermentation, increasing from 41.96 ± 1.64 mg/g to 68.75 ± 2.58 mg/g. However, the content of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) significantly dwindled from 80.02 ± 0.51 mg/g to 8.12 ± 0.07 mg/g. Additionally, 518 metabolites were pinpointed as pivotal to the metabolic variation induced by microbial fermentation. The microbiome analysis exhibited a considerable shift in the microbiota signature, with Aspergillus emerging as the dominant microorganism. Polysaccharides as a functional prebiotic have numerous activities such as regulating intestinal microorganisms and polysaccharide is one of the functional active components in tea has been known. In this study, we aimed to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of polysaccharides from four kinds of Tibetan teas at simulated digestion stages and the effect on the microbiota of fecal fermentation stages in vitro. The results revealed that Tibetan tea polysaccharides were partially digested during digestion. Additionally, during in vitro fecal microbial fermentation, Tibetan tea polysaccharides can promote the growth of some beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, Prevotella and Phascolarctobacterium to change the composition of intestinal microorganisms and promote the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Finally, a strong correlation was found between the production of SCFAs and microorganisms including Bacteroides, Bifidobacterium and Lachnoclostridium. Tibetan tea is not only a national product of geographical identity, but also a traditional beverage inherits Chinese tradition. This study evaluated the metabolic profiles and biological activity in four Tibetan teas. 83 non-volatile metabolites were identified as differentially expressed metabolites, including amino acids and their derivatives, phenolic acids, flavonoids, nucleotides and their derivatives, terpenes, alkaloids, organic acids, lipids and others. CC and 131 were rich in terpenoids and lipids. MZ contained the highest contents of amino acids and their derivatives, phenolic acids and flavonoids. 26 key volatile compounds were considered as odor-active compounds. MZ showed the highest level of antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity. Statistics analysis indicated that polyphenols, flavonoids and catechins were significantly correlated (|r| ≥ 0.7, P < 0.05) with biological activities. This study indicated significant differences in the metabolic profiles of various types of Tibetan tea, which provided a clear database for quality detection of Tibetan tea., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Cerebral stroke, a common clinical problem, is the predominant cause of disability and death worldwide. Its prevalence increases and infarctions exacerbate with age. A Tibetan plant, Brassica rapa L., possesses multiple medicinal effects, such as anti-altitude sickness, anti-hyperlipidemia and anti-fatigue, as mentioned in the noted ancient Tibet pharmacopeia "The Four Medical Tantras". Our preliminary studies also showed the anti-hypoxia protection mechanism of B. rapa L., implying its possible relationship with anti-ischemic neuroprotection. However, the potential molecular mechanism of the active constituent of turnip against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion remains unclear. In our study, oxidative stress markers, including LDH, ROS, SOD, GPx and CAT were assayed. In controlled in vitro assays, we found that the turnip's active constituent had remarkable anti-hypoxia capability. We further showed the profound effects of the active constituent of turnip on the levels of apoptosis-related proteins, including Bax, Bcl-2 and caspase-3, which contributed to its anti-inflammatory activity. Western blot analysis results also implied that active-constituent pretreatment reversed the diminished expression of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway mediated by oxygen glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R); further experimental evidence showed that the protective role was limited in the PI3K inhibitor (LY294002) treatment group. Our results demonstrated that the functional monomer of B. rapa L. exerted a neuroprotective effect against OGD/R-induced HT22 cell injury, and its potential mechanism provides a scientific basis for future clinical applications and its use as a functional food.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a region with high altitudes and complicated terrain conditions. Due to the special conditions of this region, it is also regarded as the third pole of the Earth. The land cover and vegetation in this region have not been extensively studied, so this study investigated the possibility of using a combined classifier that was established based on D-S evidence theory to extract the land cover of the TP. Multiple feature images were obtained based on a single classification rule, and the feature images were normalized to obtain the basic probability assignment (BPA). The BPA was used as the evidence source to represent the belief level of each type of land cover. The information for the different belief levels was combined based on the D-S evidence theory. The maximum belief level of the combination results was used to identify the land cover types on the TP. The results of this study indicate that based on the D-S evidence theory, multiple classifiers can effectively be combined to improve the classification results. This study has also revealed that more classifiers fused together to make a combined classifier did not result in the combined classifier's accuracy being higher than those of the original classifiers. Higher accuracies were only obtained when more high accuracy evidence theory was used in the classifier combination, in which case, the combined classifier's classification accuracy was also high.

Aims: To measure the number of days of enamel formation between periodic striae of Retzius growth lines, the Retzius periodicity (RP), and to compare this multi-day, or multidien rhythm, to body height and weight among people from Beijing, China and Lhasa, Tibet/China., Subjects and Methods: Subjects requiring dental extractions from clinics in Beijing, China ( N  = 338) and Lhasa, Tibet/China ( N  = 227) provided a tooth and body size information. Multiple observers examined histological sections of the teeth and recorded RP. RP values were statistically compared to body height and weight., Results: In Beijing and Lhasa samples, respectively, average height was 166.38 and 165.70 cm, average weight was 59.53 and 66.53 kg, and average RP was 7.47 and 7.69 d. Statistically significant differences were found between Beijing and Lhasa weight and RP means. Correlations for height and weight against RP were significant, but only comparatively strong for height., Conclusions: Supporting the negative correlation presented in previous studies, RP is negatively associated with height and weight among a large intraspecific sample of people from Beijing and Lhasa. RP represents a metabolic-mediated multidien biological timing mechanism responsible for the rate of cell proliferation and maintenance of the body.

Gymnocypris namensis, the only commercial fish in Namtso Lake of Tibet in China, is rated as nearly threatened species in the Red List of China's Vertebrates. As one of the highest-altitude schizothorax fish in China, G. namensis has strong adaptability to the plateau harsh environment. Although being an indigenous economic fish with high value in research, the biological characterization, genetic diversity, and plateau adaptability of G. namensis are still unclear. Here, we used Pacific Biosciences single molecular real time long read sequencing technology to generate full-length transcripts of G. namensis. Sequences clustering analysis and error correction with Illumina-produced short reads to obtain 319,044 polished isoforms. After removing redundant reads, 125,396 non-redundant isoforms were obtained. Among all transcripts, 103,286 were annotated to public databases. Natural selection has acted on 42 genes for G. namensis, which were enriched on the functions of mismatch repair and Glutathione metabolism. Total 89,736 open reading frames, 95,947 microsatellites, and 21,360 long non-coding RNAs were identified across all transcripts. This is the first study of transcriptome in G. namensis by using PacBio Iso-seq. The acquisition of full-length transcript isoforms might accelerate the transcriptome research of G. namensis and provide basis for further research.

Since 2008, we have been studying a saline lake, Dalangtan (DLT) Playa, and its surroundings in a hyperarid region of the Qaidam Basin on the Tibetan Plateau as a potential Mars analog site. We describe the evolution of saline deposits in the Qaidam Basin (including DLT), based on investigative findings accumulated over the course of 60 years of geological surveys. In addition, we report regional meteorological patterns recorded for the past 32 years along with meteorological station recorded data at DLT since 2012. Overall, the DLT area on the Tibetan Plateau has low atmospheric pressure, high ultraviolet radiation, low annual mean temperatures (T) but large seasonal and diurnal T cycles, and extremely low relative humidity, all of which bear some similarities with the equatorial region on Mars. In addition, salt types similar to those found on Mars, such as magnesium-sulfates, chlorides, and perchlorates, are found at the surface and subsurface in the DLT area (and the other two playas in the Qaidam Basin), thus supporting DLT as a Mars analog in terms of mineralogy and geochemistry.
