Four isolates tentatively identified as Pseudaegerita matsushimae on the basis of the morphology of bulbil-like propagules were collected from substrates submerged in water in Thailand and Japan. In culture studies the two Thai isolates were found to produce phialoconidia on conidiogenous cells and phialoconidiophores whose morphology was similar to that of Trichoderma. Phylogenetic analysis based on D1/D2 regions of LSU rDNA sequences showed that the four isolates were nested in Hypocrea/Trichoderma (Hypocreales) while P. corticalis, the type species of Pseudaegerita, belongs to Hyaloscypha (Helotiales). Preliminary analysis by ISTH Web tools based on 5.8S-ITS rDNA and phylogenetic analysis based on rpb2 and tef1-int4 genes showed that the isolates have specific sequences of Trichoderma (anchors 1-5) and belong to the Hamatum clade but they grouped apart from any known species of Trichoderma. The sequences of the tef1-int4 gene, which were amplified from the authentic specimen of P. matsushimae (IMI 266915), also showed that it belongs to the Hamatum clade closely clustering with T. yunnanense but separate from our four isolates. The morphology of P. matsushimae (IMI 266915), especially the sizes of phialides and phialoconidia, were different from T. yunnanense. Thus, we conclude that IMI 266915 and our isolates are to be assigned to two different species in the Hamatum clade of Trichoderma, although both species have similar morphology of bulbils and phialoconidia. Morphology and molecular data revealed that P. matsushimae should be assigned to the genus Trichoderma as 7: matsushimae and the Thai and Japanese isolates are placed in T. aeroaquaticum sp. nov. This finding supports the interpretation that aero-aquatic fungi have evolved from terrestrial fungi. We assume that these fungi probably were derived from typically soil-inhabiting species of Trichoderma; an adaptation to aquatic environments is shown by formation of bulbil-like propagules floating on water. The article presents a study which examines the two isolates ACT04T and AC05, isolated from the red ginger gathered from Chiang Mai, Thailand. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, the isolates were included within a group of different genera and were formed as an independent cluster along with a certain type of strain. The study suggests that based on the information obtained, the two isolates can be classified into a separate genus, the Ameyameae chiangmaiensis gen. nov., sp. nov.

Xylan is a major component of hemicellulose, which constitutes about 40 % of plant biomass. Hydrolysis of xylan into simple sugars is one of the important steps in the conversion of lignocellulosic material to value-added products. During an investigation of cellulose- and xylan-degrading yeasts, two yeast strains that were able to use cellulose and xylan as sole carbon source were found to represent a phylogenetically distinct species in the Spathaspora clade. The closest species in terms of pairwise sequence similarity in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene was Candida subhashii. The novel species can be distinguished from the other species in the Spathaspora clade based on the ability to assimilate methanol and raffinose, growth in medium containing 60 % glucose, and growth at 42 °C. It ferments glucose but not other carbohydrates. The name Candida xylanilytica sp. nov. is proposed for this species. The type strain is KU-Xn11(T) ( = NBRC 106499(T)  = BCC 34694(T)  = CBS 11761(T)).

A Gram-positive and catalase-negative coccus that formed chains, strain FP15-1(T), isolated from fermented tea leaves ('miang'), was studied systematically. The strain was facultatively anaerobic and produced l-lactic acid from glucose. Demethylmenaquinone (DMK-7) was the major menaquinone. Straight-chain unsaturated fatty acids C(16 : 1) and C(18 : 1) were the dominant components. The DNA G+C content was 37.8 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA and RNA polymerase alpha subunit (rpoA) gene sequence analysis, strain FP15-1(T) was closely related to Enterococcus italicus KCTC 5373(T), with 99.2 and 93.8 % similarity, respectively. The strain could be clearly distinguished from E. italicus ATCC 5373(T) by low DNA-DNA relatedness (< or =33.8 %) and phenotypic characteristics. Therefore, this strain represent a novel species of the genus Enterococcus, for which the name Enterococcus camelliae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FP15-1(T) (=KCTC 13133(T) =NBRC 101868(T) =NRIC 0105(T) =TISTR 932(T) =PCU 277(T)).

Two actinomycete strains, LK2-10T and LK2-5, which produced single, non-motile spores, were isolated from peat swamp forest soil in Yala Province, Thailand. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of these strains. Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of these strains coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences also indicated that these strains should be classified in the genus Micromonospora and clearly separated from their closest relative, Micromonospora nigra DSM 43818T. Furthermore, a combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and physiological and biochemical properties indicated that these strains were distinguished from all recognized Micromonospora species. These strains therefore represent a novel species, for which the name Micromonospora eburnea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LK2-10T (=JCM 12345T=PCU 238T=DSM 44814T=TISTR 1531T).
