Background: Delta-8 THC is a federally unregulated psychoactive cannabis product rising in popularity. However, little is known regarding its retail availability. Method: We assessed Delta-8 THC retail by calling locations with alcohol, tobacco, and/or consumable hemp retail licenses in Fort Worth, Texas, before and after Texas announced ongoing litigation surrounding Delta-8 THC legality. We linked census block area deprivation index (ADI) scores (1–10; 10 = most disadvantaged) to locations. Logistic regression models examined associations between license type, ADI, ADI*license type interaction, and Delta-8 availability at each time. Results: Retail availability was 11% at Time 1 (n = 133/1,223) and 9% at Time 2 (n = 94/1,026). Alcohol (aORTime1 = 0.18, 95%CI = 0.12,0.28; aORTime2 = 0.14, 95%CI = 0.08,0.24), tobacco (aORTime1 = 15.13, 95%CI = 6.78,33.74; aORTime2 = 12.39, 95%CI = 4.97,30.91), and consumable hemp licenses (aORTime1 = 21.85, 95%CI = 7.91,60.39; aORTime2 = 22.93, 95%CI = 6.92,75.98) were associated with Delta-8 THC retail availability; ADI scores were borderline but not statistically significant. The multiplicative interaction at Time 2 indicated locations with both high ADI scores and alcohol retail licenses had higher odds of selling Delta-8 THC. Differential associations between ADI and Delta-8 THC availability were observed based on those with (b = 0.007) or without (b = −0.023) alcohol retail licenses. Conclusions: Both timepoints had similar proportions of Delta-8 THC retailers, indicating that despite the uncertain legal landscape in Texas, interest in Delta-8 did not appear to be declining. Geographic socioeconomic disparities were observed among locations with alcohol retail licenses. Future regulations may include minimum distances from specific locations (e.g., schools), particularly in more disadvantaged areas. Simple Summary: People with substance use disorders have extremely elevated rates of smoking and, therefore, are a priority population for lung cancer screening. This paper examines the lung cancer screening practices—determining patients' eligibility for lung cancer screening and making referrals to screening—of Texas healthcare organizations that provide services to people with substance use disorders. This work demonstrated that few organizations are determining patients' eligibility and even fewer are making referrals. While not all organizations have the capability to make referrals (i.e., no on-site prescriber), they each have a vital role to play in eligibility determination and patient education. There is a need for researchers to focus intervention and implementation efforts within these organizations to increase capacity and ensure that patients are being navigated to lung cancer screening at multiple touch points across the healthcare continuum. For people at elevated risk for lung cancer, lung cancer screening (LCS) reduces lung cancer mortality. People with non-nicotine substance use disorders (SUDs) have elevated rates of smoking compared with the general population, highlighting them as a priority population for LCS consideration. Although research has shown LCS is underutilized, there is little literature to inform whether organizations that serve individuals with SUDs have existing clinical protocols surrounding LCS. In the current study, we examine the LCS eligibility and referral practices among these organizations. We conducted a statewide needs assessment survey in 2021 to discern how tobacco use was being addressed at Texas organizations that provide treatment or services to individuals with SUDs. Respondents were asked to report on their center's LCS eligibility and referral practices. The analytic sample consists of 125 respondents who represented 23 federally qualified health centers, 29 global local mental health authorities (LMHAs), 12 substance use treatment programs in LMHAs, and 61 standalone substance use treatment centers. Very few respondents indicated that healthcare providers at their center made referrals to LCS for patients (8.8%); a few respondents indicated that their healthcare providers assessed patients' eligibility for LCS but did not make referrals (3.2%). Intervention and implementation efforts are needed in these and other SUD healthcare settings to bolster organizational capacity and ensure that patients are being navigated to lung cancer screening at multiple touch points across the care continuum. • We examined latent classes of tobacco and marijuana co-use over three years. • Two classes had high probabilities of marijuana, blunt, cigarette, and spliff use. • Class stability was high over three years suggesting a need for early intervention. Co-use, including concurrent use or co-administration, of cannabis and tobacco is most prevalent in young adulthood and associated with worse health outcomes than use of either substance alone. This study examined latent classes of tobacco and cannabis concurrent use and co-administration, and transitions between classes from 2016 to 2019, among a sample of young adult college students in Texas. Participants included 4,448 young adults (64.2% female, 64.7% non-white, mean age = 20.5) in a longitudinal cohort study. Measures included past 30-day use of cigarettes. hookah, cigars, ENDS, cannabis, and cannabis and tobacco co-administration. Latent Markov models were used to estimate latent class membership and transitions between classes from 2016 to 2017 and 2017 to 2019. Four latent classes emerged: non-use (58% of students) characterized by low/no probability of any use; general use (19%) characterized by some level of use of all behaviors; blunt and cannabis use class (13%) characterized by high probabilities of cannabis use and co-administration with blunts; and concurrent and co-administration use (10%) with high probabilities of cigarette, cannabis, blunt, and spliff use. Most students remained in the same latent class from 2016 to 2019. While most students reported low/no tobacco and cannabis co-use, those who used cannabis and/or tobacco remained in their use classes over the course of the study (2016 to 2019). Public health advocates on college campuses should consider prevention and cessation programs that incorporate the constellation of behaviors related to cannabis and tobacco co-use and educate students about the health consequences of co-use. Objective: Although substantial research has explored the Hispanic health paradox (HHP) and suggests that Latinx immigrants experience positive health outcomes relative to those born in the United States, less research has assessed the role of immigration status. Our aim was to examine this role in Latinx health.Methods: Using survey data collected at two free/reduced-cost clinics in southernmost Texas, we examined differences in the mental and self-rated health, substance, alcohol, and tobacco use of low-income patients by undocumented/documented immigrant and US-born/naturalized citizen status (N = 588).Results: Based on ordinary least squares regression results, undocumented Latinx immigrants report lower negative self-rated health (coefficient -0.27, 95% confidence interval -0.50 to -0.01) and lower depressive symptoms (coefficient -0.34, 95% confidence interval -0.67 to -0.02]) compared with their US citizen peers (P < 0.05). Logistic regression results suggest that undocumented and documented Latinx immigrants do not differ in alcohol, tobacco, or substance use relative to their citizen peers.Conclusions: Despite facing potentially adverse social environments, undocumented Latinx immigrants experience positive health outcomes relative to US-born/naturalized citizen peers. Objectives: From 2017 to 2018, electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use increased 78% among high school students and 48% among middle school students in the United States. However, few e-cigarette prevention interventions have been evaluated. We determined the feasibility and initial effectiveness of "CATCH My Breath," an e-cigarette prevention program, among a sample of middle schools in central Texas. Methods: Twelve middle schools in Texas (6 intervention schools and 6 control schools) participated in the CATCH My Breath pilot program during 2016-2017. CATCH My Breath is rooted in social cognitive theory, consists of 4 interactive in-class modules, and is collaboratively administered via classroom and physical education teachers, student–peer leaders, and social messaging (eg, school posters). We collected 3 waves of data: baseline (January 2017), 4-month follow-up (May 2017), and 16-month follow-up (May 2018). Using school as the unit of analysis, we tested a repeated cross-sectional, condition-by-time interaction on e-cigarette ever use, psychosocial determinants of use, and other tobacco use behaviors. Analyses controlled for school-level sociodemographic characteristics (eg, sex, race/ethnicity, and percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch). Results: From baseline to 16-month follow-up, increases in ever e-cigarette use prevalence were significantly lower among intervention schools (2.8%-4.9%) than among control schools (2.7%-8.9%), controlling for covariates (P =.01). Intervention schools also had significantly greater improvements in e-cigarette knowledge (β = 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.21-1.21; P =.008) and perceived positive outcomes (β = –0.12; 95% CI, –0.23 to –0.02; P =.02) than control schools, controlling for covariates from baseline to 16-month follow-up. Conclusion: Ever e-cigarette use was lower among middle schools that implemented the CATCH My Breath program than among those that did not. Background: Although US cigarette smoking rates have steadily declined, the changing nature of nicotine consumption and the popularity of non-combustible nicotine products urges us to revise tobacco prevention strategies. Research on smoking perspectives among Hispanic youth is limited yet crucial for prevention efforts with Hispanics being the largest minority in the U.S. Objective: This study sought to understand the experience and perceptions of low-income Hispanic youth regarding tobacco use. Methods: Forty-nine adolescents (ages 9 to 19) from El Paso, Texas, participated in five extended focus group discussions about tobacco/nicotine use. Results: Adolescents were predominantly exposed to tobacco through relatives, although school and party contexts became more relevant as youth aged. Youth had negative perceptions of tobacco and smokers, but believed their peers often viewed tobacco positively. Youth also saw tobacco use as a functional stress-management strategy, especially within their extended family. Health and family were strong motivators not to smoke. Conclusions: Youth maintain several tensions in their views on tobacco. Tobacco use is considered unpleasant and harmful, yet youth perceive their peers to view it as cool. Peer to peer discussion of tobacco experiences and perceptions may help correct these incongruent viewpoints. Adding to this tension is the perception that tobacco is used to manage stress. Given the importance of the home environment for Hispanic youth, tobacco prevention efforts may benefit from engaging family to identify the ways in which tobacco use causes stress. Diverse tobacco and nicotine products have altered the terrain of tobacco use behaviors. Limited research has examined contemporary patterns of use among young adults. This study identified tobacco and nicotine product use groups and examined changes in young adults' use patterns, across a 1.5-year period. Participants were 5,482 18-29-year-old students (M age = 20.5, SD = 2.36; 63% female) from 24 Texas colleges who completed a four-wave bi-annual online survey. Latent transition analysis was used to identify groups from 10 items (ever and current use of cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, and hookah) and to examine probabilities of transitioning between groups over four waves. Five groups were identified: Non-users (30%), Poly-experimenters (26%), Hookah experimenters (18%), E-cigarette & hookah experimenters (15%), and Poly-cigarette users (11%). Few students transitioned between groups over time. Poly-cigarette users had the highest average probability of remaining stable over time (1.00), followed by E-cigarette & hookah experimenters (.97), Non-users (.94), Poly-experimenters (.93), and Hookah experimenters (.92). All groups became more stable over time except Hookah experimenters whose members were most likely to transition to Poly-cigarette users or other experimenter groups. The greatest transition was from Poly-experimenters to Poly-cigarette users with probabilities of .10, .08, and .03 for transitioning between waves one and two, two and three, and three and four, respectively. There was substantial poly-use and experimentation, which may explain little movement between groups over the 1.5-year time period and underscores the need for prevention programs targeting multiple product use among college students. Aims: To examine bidirectional associations between self‐reported exposure to electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) marketing and ENDS use, over four 6‐month follow‐up surveys, among young adults. Design The Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas project (M‐PACT) is a cohort study that examined exposure to tobacco marketing and tobacco use behaviors among college students in Texas, United States. Setting and participants: Participants were 5478 students from 24 2‐year and 4‐year Texas colleges. Approximately 64% (n = 3506) of the cohort were non‐white, 64% were female and the average age was 20 years. Measurements Students completed a baseline survey in Fall 2014/Spring 2015 and three subsequent surveys 6 months apart. Items assessed current ENDS use and self‐reported exposure to ENDS marketing through the point‐of‐sale, on television, on the radio, on the internet and on billboards. A multi‐level cross‐lagged path model was used to examine the bidirectional associations between self‐reported exposure to ENDS marketing and current ENDS use across the four waves, controlling for socio‐demographics. Findings Self‐reported exposure to ENDS marketing at each previous wave predicted ENDS use at each subsequent wave (β = 0.07–0.10, P < 0.001). ENDS use at waves 2 and 3 predicted self‐reported exposure to ENDS marketing at wave 3 and 4, respectively (β = 0.07–0.09, P < 0.001). Although ENDS users were more likely than non‐users to report exposure to ENDS marketing, self‐reported exposure to ENDS marketing predicted subsequent ENDS use controlling for prior ENDS use. Conclusion: Self‐reported exposure to electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) marketing was bidirectionally associated with past 30‐day use of ENDS among young adult college students in Texas, USA from 2014/15 to 2016. Introduction: The prevalence of smokeless tobacco use among U.S. active duty service members has been much higher than in the U.S. general population. The association between deployment and smokeless tobacco use has not been well studied. We investigated the association between deployment and smokeless tobacco use among U.S. active duty service members. We also evaluated the modification effects from other factors related to smokeless tobacco use on the deployment-smokeless tobacco use association.Materials and Methods: Eligible active duty service members stationed at two military installations (Fort Bragg, NC, USA and Lackland Air Force Base, TX, USA) were recruited from July 2015 to May 2016. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between deployment and smokeless tobacco use and estimated odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Stratified analysis was performed to evaluate modification effects from other commonly known factors related to smokeless tobacco use in military, specifically, cigarette smoking status, use among family members (family history of use), perception of harm, and use among military peers.Results: Out of 2,465 study participants who completed the questionnaire, 548 were smokeless tobacco users. Service members who had been deployed to a combat zone had 1.39 fold (95% CI = 1.03-1.87) increased odds of using smokeless tobacco than those who never deployed to a combat zone. The odds of smokeless tobacco use among those who had been deployed once, twice, three times and four or more times to a combat zone were 1.27 (95% CI = 0.91-1.78), 1.30 (95% CI = 0.85-1.99), 2.49 (95% CI = 1.45-4.28), and 2.88 (95% CI = 1.71-4.86), respectively, with a significant dose-response trend (p for trend <0.0001). Further, subjects who served in combat units during deployment exhibited more than two-fold increased odds of use as compared with those who had never been deployed (OR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.41-2.93). In stratified analysis, the association between deployment and smokeless tobacco use was only present among subjects who never smoked cigarettes, those without family history of smokeless tobacco use, and those who had low perception of harm of use.Conclusions: Military deployment was associated with smokeless tobacco use among active service members. However, the influence of military deployment on smokeless tobacco use was not equally strong on all service members. Subjects who never smoked cigarettes, who had no family history of use and who had low perception of harm were the most susceptible subgroups to deployment-related smokeless tobacco use. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of tobacco uptake and other substance use, from early to late adolescence. Methods: We used weighted latent class analysis, conducted separately for 7th, 9th, and 11th graders, to assess patterns of susceptibility, ever and current use of combustible tobacco and e-cigarettes, and other substance use (ie, current alcohol, binge drinking, and marijuana). Data were from Wave 3 of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System (n = 2733; N = 461,069), collected in fall 2015. Multinomial regression was used to examine differences in class membership by demographic factors. Results: Two latent classes were identified in 7th grade, 3 classes in 9th grade, and 4 classes in 11th grade models. In each grade, classes included both a "no risk" and a "tobacco susceptible" class. For 9th grade, there was an additional "tobacco ever use" class, and 11th grade had the same additional class as well as an "all products use" class. Conclusion: Distinct patterns of polysubstance use emerged as grade level increased, supporting a stage-sequential model of onset and progression across developmental age groups. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine differences between current and non-current cigarette users, focusing on sociodemographic factors, non-cigarette tobacco product use, parental and friend use, and alcohol and marijuana use; and to identify predictors of cigarette use sixmonths later. Participants: Participants included young adults (n = 4,296) from 24 Texas colleges, participating in a young adult cohort study, beginning in fall 2014. Methods: Mixed effects logistic regressions were conducted accounting for school-level variability. Results: Cigarette users were older, more likely to report use of non-cigarette tobacco products and peer use of cigarettes than non-current users. Wave 1 cigarette and non-cigarette tobacco product use, marijuana use and binge drinking, and peer use all uniquely predicted cigarette use at wave 2. Conclusions: Colleges need prevention programs targeting multiple tobacco products, because non-cigarette tobacco use and other risky behaviors appear to be independent risk factors for cigarette use in young adults. Coalitions in Horizon City in El Paso County, Texas and the El Paso Community College (EPCC) had previously attempted to pass smoke-free policies in 2008 and 2016, respectively; however, both policies failed to pass at those times. The coalitions refocused their activities and were successful in passing policies in EPCC in 2020 and in Horizon City in 2021. We employed a participatory case study method to understand what factors changed between the first and second attempts at smoke-free policy adoption in Horizon City and EPCC. Using the Advocacy Coalition Framework as a basis for analysis, we identified the role of coalitions, their beliefs, use of power resources, role of policy brokers, and external events. We identify best practices and make recommendations for coalitions seeking to adopt smoke-free policies in other locations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Most research regarding sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations is limited to examination of cigarette or general tobacco use or does not examine heterogeneity across SGM groups other than lesbian or gay and bisexual individuals. This study examined differences in the odds of current use and age of initiation of five tobacco/nicotine products among three groups of SGM young adults who self-identified as (1) gay or lesbian, (2) bisexual, and (3) queer, transgender, or "other," compared to their heterosexual peers.Methods: Participants were 4252 college students aged 18-29 years from 24 colleges in Texas who completed an online tobacco use survey. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to examine the odds of SGM participants currently using each tobacco product. Multilevel linear regression models were used to examine the association of current product users' SGM status with self-reported age of each product's initiation. All models were adjusted for sociodemographic factors and accounted for students clustered within each college.Results: At least one SGM group had significantly greater odds of currently using every tobacco product type compared to heterosexual participants, except hookah. There were few differences across groups in age of initiation. However, queer, transgender, and "other-" identified participants initiated e-cigarettes 1.34 years younger than heterosexual participants, and bisexual participants initiated smokeless tobacco 3.66 years younger than heterosexual participants.Conclusions: Findings highlight some significant tobacco use disparities among SGM young adults compared to their heterosexual peers. Longitudinal studies with larger group sizes will identify prospective predictors of sustained SGM-related tobacco use disparities.Implications: This study extends the current literature by including the sexual and gender minority identity options of queer, transgender, and "other," highlighting disparities in tobacco use between young adults in these subgroups compared to their heterosexual peers, particularly in noncigarette tobacco product use. Findings underscore the need for the Food and Drug Association and other health agencies to tailor health communication efforts specific to sexual and gender minority populations pertaining to the risks and harms surrounding tobacco product use. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Computerized surveys present many advantages over paper surveys. However, school-based adolescent research questionnaires still mainly rely on paper-and-pencil surveys as access to computers in schools is often not practical. Tablet-assisted self-interviews ( TASI) present a possible solution, but their use is largely untested. This paper presents a method for and our experiences with implementing a TASI in a school setting. METHODS A TASI was administered to 3907 middle and high school students from 79 schools. The survey assessed use of tobacco products and exposure to tobacco marketing. To assess in-depth tobacco use behaviors, the TASI employed extensive skip patterns to reduce the number of not-applicable questions that nontobacco users received. Pictures were added to help respondents identify the tobacco products they were being queried about. RESULTS Students were receptive to the tablets and required no instructions in their use. None were lost, stolen, or broken. Item nonresponse, unanswered questions, was a pre-administration concern; however, 92% of participants answered 96% or more of the questions. CONCLUSIONS This method was feasible and successful among a diverse population of students and schools. It generated a unique dataset of in-depth tobacco use behaviors that would not have been possible through a paper-and-pencil survey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Subjective experiences ("SEs") at first cigarette use have been thoroughly examined; however, limited research has examined SEs at first use of non-cigarette products. This study addresses this gap in the literature.Methods: Cross-sectional data from 6th, 8th and 10th grade students in four metropolitan areas of Texas (n=3907/N=461,069). Nausea, coughing, relaxation, rush/buzz, and dizziness at first use were assessed for cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah, and cigar products. Chi-square analyses examined differences in the prevalence of first use SEs by product. Weighted multiple logistic regression analyses examined the association of SEs and current product use. Covariates were grade, gender, race/ethnicity, and current other tobacco product use.Results: Exploratory factor analysis of SEs determined differing factor structures across tobacco products. For example, the following items loaded onto the positive SE factor: 1) relaxation, rush, and dizziness for cigarettes, and 2) relaxation and rush for e-cigarettes, hookah, and cigar products. Prevalence of negative SEs (coughing and nausea) were higher for cigarette and cigar products compared to e-cigarettes and hookah. Positive SEs for cigarettes were associated with increased odds of current cigarette use (AOR=1.51); similarly positive SEs for cigars were associated with increased odds of current cigar use (AOR=2.11). Feeling nauseous at first use of cigars was associated with decreased odds of current cigar use (AOR=0.18). No SEs were associated with current e-cigarette or hookah use.Conclusions: Subjective experiences at first use differ by tobacco product. Background: There is a well-established link between cigarette smoking and depression; less is known about the potential association between alternative tobacco products, such as hookah, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette use) with depression. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now regulating tobacco products and is interested in tobacco product use among those with mental health problems and other special populations such as college students.Methods: Cross-sectional statewide convenience sample study of 5438 college students in 24 colleges and universities in Texas. Past 30-day use of hookah, cigar, smokeless tobacco, cigarette, and e-cigarette use were measured by self-report. Depressive symptoms were measured by the 10-item short form of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies scale.Results: Only e-cigarette use was positively associated with depressive symptoms, even after accounting for all other tobacco products and socio-demographics. There were no significant interactions between race/ethnicity or gender with each of the tobacco products on depressive symptoms.Conclusions: E-cigarette use was positively associated with depressive symptoms among college students in Texas. Studies indicate that when abstinence is initiated, escalating reinforcement schedules maintain continuous abstinence longer than fixed reinforcement schedules. However, these studies were conducted for shorter durations than most clinical trials and also resulted in larger reinforcer value for escalating participants during the 1st week of the experiment. We tested whether escalating reinforcement schedules maintained abstinence longer than fixed reinforcement schedules in a 12-week clinical trial. Smokers (146) were randomized to an escalating reinforcement schedule, a fixed reinforcement schedule, or a control condition. Escalating reinforcement participants received $5.00 for their first breath carbon monoxide (CO) sample<3 ppm, with a $0.50 increase for each consecutive sample. Fixed reinforcement participants received $19.75 for each breath CO sample<3 ppm. Control participants received payments only for delivering a breath CO sample. Similar proportions of escalating and fixed reinforcement participants met the breath CO criterion at least once. Escalating reinforcement participants maintained criterion breath CO levels longer than fixed reinforcement and control participants. Similar to previous short-term studies, escalating reinforcement schedules maintained longer durations of abstinence than fixed reinforcement schedules during a clinical trial. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of two inhaled essential oils (black pepper or angelica) on the nicotine habits of students, staff, and faculty on a U.S. college campus. Design: Comparative study with pre-/post-test measures. Setting: Community college in rural East Texas. Participants: Convenience sample of 20 volunteers from the college community (students, faculty, and staff) who were regular (daily) users of nicotine (cigarettes, snuff, or chewing tobacco). Interventions: Inhalation of one drop of essential oil on a tissue for 2 minutes when participant was craving nicotine. Outcome Measures: (1) Pre-inhalation journal recording of self-assessed level of craving for nicotine on a 0-10 scale, (2) post-inhalation journal recording of self-assessed level of craving for nicotine on a 0-10 scale, and (3) minutes that participant waited from start of inhalation until next use of tobacco. Results: Both black pepper and angelica reduced the level of nicotine craving and allowed a longer delay before next use of tobacco. However, black pepper reduced the level of craving more than did angelica, and angelica allowed for a longer delay than did black pepper. Though research has shown that religion provides a protective influence with respect to a number of health-related outcomes, little work has examined its influence on patterns of alcohol (especially binge drinking) and tobacco consumption among Latinos in Texas. Thus, we used a probability sample of Texas adults to test this relationship via logistic regression. Our results revealed that clear distinctions emerge on the basis of both denomination and frequency of attendance. Specifically, Protestants who regularly attend religious services are significantly more likely to be abstainers and to have never smoked, while those with no religious affiliation exhibit relatively unfavorable risk profiles. These findings persist despite a range of socio-demographic controls. Our study supports the assertion that religion may serve as an important protective influence on risky health behaviors. Objective: To examine the intention to quit waterpipe smoking among college students. Participants: A total of 276 University of Houston students identified through an online survey administered in February 2011. Participants indicated they had smoked a waterpipe in the month prior to the survey. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Questions included demographics, tobacco use, perceived risk of waterpipe smoking, and social acceptability. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine predictors of an intention to quit. Results: Most of the sample participants (n = 227; 83%) reported that they had no intention to quit. Students believing that waterpipe smoking was harmful were more likely to have an intention to quit (odd ratio [OR] = 2.38, 95% confidence interval [CI; 1.05, 5.36]). Those who smoked for more than 60 minutes were less likely to have a desire to quit (OR = 0.29, 95% CI [0.12, 0.73]). Conclusions: The low level of a desire to quit demonstrated underscores the urgent need to develop interventions that educate users about expected harms of continued use. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: African Americans suffer disproportionately from the adverse health consequences of smoking, and also report substantially lower socioeconomic status than Whites and other racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Although socioeconomic disadvantage is known to have a negative influence on smoking cessation rates and overall health, little is known about the influence of socioeconomic status on smoking cessation specifically among African Americans. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to characterize the impact of several individual- and area-level indicators of socioeconomic status on smoking cessation among African Americans. Data were collected as part of a smoking cessation intervention study for African American smokers (N = 379) recruited from the Houston, Texas, metropolitan area, who participated in the study between 2005 and 2007. The separate and combined influences of individual-level (insurance status, unemployment, education, and income) and area-level (neighborhood unemployment, education, income, and poverty) indicators of socioeconomic status on continuous smoking abstinence were examined across time intervals using continuation ratio logit modeling. Individual-level analyses indicated that unemployment was significantly associated with reduced odds of smoking abstinence, while higher income was associated with greater odds of abstinence. However, only unemployment remained a significant predictor of abstinence when unemployment and income were included in the model together. Area-level analyses indicated that greater neighborhood unemployment and poverty were associated with reduced odds of smoking abstinence, while greater neighborhood education was associated with higher odds of abstinence. However, only neighborhood unemployment remained significantly associated with abstinence status when individual-level income and unemployment were included in the model. Overall, findings suggest that individual- and area-level unemployment have a negative impact on smoking cessation among African Americans. Addressing unemployment through public policy and within smoking cessation interventions, and providing smoking cessation treatment for the unemployed may have a beneficial impact on tobacco-related health disparities. This study examines middle-aged and older women's smoking practices and identifies factors associated with tobacco use and cessation in this population. Data of 593 women were analyzed from a seven-county random household sample in Texas. Sequential multinomial logistic regression compared associations with having never smoked, having quit smoking, and currently smoking. Compared to smokers, never smokers and past smokers were significantly more likely to be older, more educated, of better general health, and report past-year physician visits and fewer depressive symptoms. Mental health and smoking are interrelated, indicating the need for addressing depression in smoking-cessation efforts for aging women. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A Smoking Prevention Interactive Experience (ASPIRE) is an innovative, computer-based smoking prevention and cessation intervention delivered to a culturally diverse population of high school students. Founded in the Transtheoretical Model of Change, five main and two “booster” sessions comprise the interactive intervention. Here we describe the intervention and the baseline characteristics from our study sample of 1,574 10th graders from 16 high schools in Houston, Texas. Environmental and behavioral smoking risk factors were assessed, and the two intervention groups were comparable with respect to most measured variables. This paper focuses on changing patterns of substance use among low income, African American drug users evacuated from New Orleans, Louisiana, during Hurricane Katrina of August 2005. It examines the relationship between increases and decreases in alcohol and tobacco (AT) use and illicit drug (ID) use after Katrina and pre-disaster and within-disaster factors. Data from structured interviews with 200 Katrina evacuees currently living in Houston were collected 8–14 months after the disaster. Multivariate analysis revealed that rises in AT use were positively associated with education. Females and younger evacuees were more likely to have increased AT use. ID use increase was positively associated with resource loss and leaving the city before Katrina. Decreases in AT and ID use were found to be associated with disaster-related exposure. The paper discusses the specific consequences of disasters on disadvantaged minority substance users and the importance of developing public health disaster policies that target this population. Purpose: Tobacco use and alcohol consumption have been identified as the major risk factors for oral and pharyngeal cancers. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of adolescent high schoolers in South Texas regarding the risk factors and signs for oral cancer and to examine their prevalence of cigarette smoking, use of smokeless tobacco and alcohol consumption. Method: The sample population was drawn from the public school system in Brownsville, Texas. A 39 item self administered questionnaire was completed by 1667 students in four of the five high schools. 95.6% of the students were of Mexican American Hispanic ethnicity. Results: Modeling with multivariate logistic regression revealed that among current cigarette smokers, regular alcohol use was the strongest associated risk [OR=15.7; 95% CI=10.9-22.5] followed by use of smokeless tobacco [OR=2.4; 95% CI=1.4 4.1]. There was a significantly greater (P<0.001) use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and alcohol among the Mexican American males than females. Conclusions: This study shows that the overall risk for oral cancer among the Mexican-American adolescent population is high especially among the males, and there is a great need for carefully planned health education and promotion programs for behavior change. Background: There is little information about smokers who tried potentially reduced exposure products (PREPs) (Eclipse®, Omni®, Advance Lights®, Accord®, or Ariva®), why they tried them, if they liked these products, and if they will continue to use them. Objectives: The objectives of this qualitative study were to understand: (1) how smokers who tried PREPs learned about them, (2) reasons for first trying PREPs, (3) which PREP(s) they tried, (4) what they thought of the product at first trial, (5) reasons for continuing or discontinuing use, and (6) whether they would recommend PREPs to others. Design: In October 2002, 16 focus group sessions were conducted with current cigarette smokers aged 30-50 years: eight groups in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and eight in Dallas, Texas. Specific focus groups were composed of white men, white women, African American men, African American women, Hispanic men, or Hispanic women. Results: The majority of the participants learned about PREPs through advertising or promotion, family, friends, and co-workers; major reasons given for first trying PREPs were that the products were free or inexpensive, they wanted to stop smoking, they believed the product claims of fewer health risks, or they were curious; most of them tried Eclipse® probably because the focus groups were conducted in the same cities where Eclipse® was introduced; most participants did not like PREPs; most discontinued the use of PREPS, some who continued to use them did so infrequently and also kept smoking their regular brands of cigarettes; and most would not recommend PREPs, although a few might recommend them to specific groups (for example, new smokers, the young, women, curious or health conscious people). Conclusions: Although most established smokers did not like the PREPs they tried and will not recommend them to anyone, a minority of established smokers believe that there may be a market for these products. Introduction: Few studies examine the impact of objective exposure to point-of-sale (POS) marketing for cigars including little cigars and cigarillos (LCCs) on tobacco use. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between exposure to LCC marketing at the POS and current and future use of LCCs and cigarettes among young adult college students.Method: Data on LCC and cigarette use from 4201 young adult students (mean age = 22.8 [SD = 2.3]; 35.9% non-Hispanic whites) attending 24 Texas colleges was linked to objective assessments of POS marketing at 220 tobacco retail outlets within one mile of the colleges. Multilevel logistic regression analyses examined the impact of LCC marketing at the POS on use of LCCs and cigarettes currently and 6-months later.Results: Participants were, on average, exposed to 43 LCC marketing materials per week. Results from cross-sectional analyses indicated that exposure to LCC POS marketing was associated with higher odds of current use of LCCs (AOR = 1.003, 95% CI = 1.0002, 1.0053) and cigarettes (AOR = 1.006, 95% CI = 1.0050, 1.0075). The relationship between LCC POS marketing exposure and LCC use was not significant in longitudinal models; however, exposure to LCC POS marketing at baseline did predict current cigarette use at 6-month follow-up (AOR = 1.004, 95% CI = 1.0021, 1.0052).Conclusion: Findings suggest a substantial influence of LCC marketing exposure at the POS. Background: There is an established link between depression and tobacco use among adults; however, to date, research has not explored the association of use of dual/poly tobacco products with symptoms and use of medication for depression.Methods: Data were derived from a 2018 Texas population health assessment survey (n = 2034). Multivariable logistic and multinomial regressions were used to examine for associations between self-reported symptoms of depression and use of prescription medications for depression with use of dual/poly tobacco products.Results: About 20% of adults used one tobacco product, while 9.7% used two or more products. Compared to those without depressive symptoms, those with depressive symptoms had greater odds of single (aOR: 1.66, 95% CI; 1.21 - 2.29) or dual/poly (aOR: 3.09, 95% CI; 1.92 - 4.96) tobacco product use relative to non-users; and relative to single product use, those with depressive symptoms had greater odds of dual/poly tobacco product use (aOR: 2.07; 95% CI, 1.30 - 3.32). Compared to those not using medication for depression, use of medication for depression was associated with a 1.80 (95% CI: 1.15 - 2.84) greater odds of dual/poly tobacco product use relative to non-users; and a 1.91 (95% CI: 1.14 - 3.19) greater odds of dual/poly product use relative to single product users.Conclusions: Study findings call for primary care providers and psychiatrists to expand screening of individuals experiencing depressive symptoms and using medication for depression, to include assessment for dual/poly tobacco product use. Purpose: Past 30-day tobacco and marijuana use commonly occur among adolescents. It is unclear whether use of one product precedes the other, especially given the new climate surrounding marijuana legalization and the increasing popularity of e-cigarettes.Methods: Six-panel cross-lagged regression models, with six months between each panel/Wave (2014-17), were used to model stability paths, bi-directional paths, and comorbid paths (i.e., correlations) between past 30-day use of marijuana and tobacco products. Data were derived from three cohorts of adolescents (n = 3907; weighted N = 461,069) in 6th, 8th, and 10th grades at baseline.Results: Few bidirectional relationships between past 30-day tobacco and marijuana use were observed in early adolescence (6th grade). During the middle adolescence developmental period (8th grade), past 30-day marijuana use was prospectively associated with greater risk of past 30-day tobacco use. In late adolescence (10th grade), increased odds of past 30-day marijuana use given prior past 30-day e-cigarette use, and vice versa, were observed. For all cohorts, stability paths were common, especially for past 30-day marijuana use. Comorbid use was common in middle adolescence (8th grade) but small in magnitude.Conclusions: This is the first study to longitudinally situate comorbid, past 30-day use of tobacco and marijuana and simultaneously examine bi-directional past 30-day use of these products for adolescents. Marijuana use more often and more strongly predicted subsequent tobacco use than the reverse, especially during middle adolescence (13-15 years old). Background: Use of e-cigarettes for tobacco cessation efforts is a growing trend in the United States. However, little is known about the factors that determine the use of e-cigarettes for this specific purpose.Methods: This study examined current and former cigarette smokers that reported ever using e-cigarettes. Data were obtained from a 2018 Texas population health assessment survey (n = 569) and weighted to be representative to Texas. A multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the socio-demographic and behavioral correlates of using e-cigarettes for tobacco cessation.Results: Overall, 41.3% of e-cigarette users reported using them for tobacco cessation. Among ever e-cigarette users, Non-Hispanic blacks (aOR: 0.21; 95% CI, 0.07-0.64), males (aOR: 0.40; 95% CI, 0.20-0.80), and individuals not confident in obtaining health information (aOR: 0.38; 95% CI, 0.15-0.96) were less likely to use e-cigarettes for tobacco use cessation. Conversely, among ever e-cigarette users, odds of using e-cigarettes for tobacco cessation were higher among those who were 35-44 years old (aOR: 3.68, 95% CI: 1.26-10.71), those who received advice to quit smoking from a healthcare professional (aOR: 2.77, 95% CI, 1.36-5.64), and those with more than 5 years since their last routine checkup (aOR: 3.91; 95% CI, 1.23-12.45).Conclusion: Findings from this study suggest that both health behaviors and sociodemographic factors predict use of e-cigarettes for the purpose of tobacco cessation. Furthermore, the relationship between use of e-cigarettes as a cessation device and being advised to quit tobacco use by a healthcare professional calls for additional investigation. The association between cigarette use and depression has been documented in many studies. Fewer studies have examined other tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and hookah that are used by young adults. This study examined whether increased frequency of use of these products was associated with depressive symptoms in a cohort of n = 5236 Texas college students followed from 2014 to 2017. To analyze the longitudinal data, a hierarchical model was used. Model results showed that increased frequency of single product use of cigarettes, refillable e-cigarettes and hookah was associated with depressive symptoms. Refillable and disposable e-cigarettes were examined separately and results did not provide evidence of a different association for each type of e-cigarette when cigarettes were not also used. Dual use of cigarettes with another product was also examined. Dual use was associated with higher depressive symptoms for most product combinations. However, infrequent dual use of disposable e-cigarettes and cigarettes may not be associated with depressive symptoms. Suggestions for further research are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Globally, tobacco can be attributed to more than 7 million deaths each year. To address this potentially avoidable mortality, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has engaged its Global Academic Program´s (GAP) sister institutions (SI) by conducting an inaugural tobacco control assessment survey. A similar survey was done with our University of Texas academic and health science center affiliates that led to improved adoption of tobacco control policies as well as prevention and cessation services on all campuses. The baseline data collected will serve as a mechanism to develop a tobacco prevention and control strategy within a global cancer center network. Aim: To assess SI laws and policies regarding tobacco use, existing screening and cessation services. Strategy/Tactics: Qualtrics was used to administer a 27-item survey to our GAP SI from April-October 2017. Survey questions focused on key areas of tobacco prevention and control: policy, tobacco use screening, and cessation services. A survey link was emailed to 34 institutions in 23 countries. Program/Policy process : Survey GAP SI to determine current tobacco prevention and control measures being implemented. Convene GAP SI in May 2018 to share tobacco control best practices across the network and identify resources and supports to strengthen tobacco control efforts at each institution. Build collaborations aimed at progressive actions in tobacco control policies, educational programs and cessation services culturally appropriate to the needs and resources of the GAP network. Outcomes: Of the 34 GAP SI, 26 responded to the survey (76% response rate). Key findings among the 26 responding institutions: policy - 96% are located in cities with laws regulating the sale and/or use of tobacco products by minors and 77% of the cities have laws regulating the use of tobacco in the workplace; 42% of the campuses have designated smoking areas; tobacco use screening - 65% screen for and document patients´ tobacco status, however only 27% screen "all the time"; cessation services - 19% offer telephone counseling as a cessation service; 38% offer cessation services to the community; 46% offer cessation services to employees. What was learned: The baseline assessment identified areas of institutional needs: cessation services and campus policies. Further discussion with the SI will help engage them in further efforts to address gaps in tobacco control. Collectively, we aim to develop action steps to collaborate and enhance existing services by creating a global platform in which tobacco control best practices and resources can be shared.
