Objective: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college-age students in the U.S., with disparities in suicide ideation and attempts among Latinas. The current study aims to examine if depression severity predicts suicide ideation and attempts and to examine if caregiver intergeneration acculturation conflict (IAC) moderates this link. Participants: A sample of 246 Mexican-descent female college students. Methods: Self-reported measures for depression severity, male and female caregiver IAC, and suicide ideation and attempts in the previous 12-months were ascertained. Results: In our sample, 31.1% endorsed suicide ideation and 15.9% suicide attempts. Controlling for age, both male and female caregiver IAC moderated the relationship between depression severity and suicide ideation. A similar moderation pattern emerged for the suicide attempts outcome. Conclusions: Understanding this exacerbating contextual factor can help inform prevention/intervention efforts targeting Mexican-descent college students who are experiencing depressive symptoms by focusing on decreasing IAC with both caregivers.

Introduction: Early hospital readmission following liver transplantation is associated with lower survival and worse long-term graft function. Language, cultural practices, and health literacy influence patient understanding of posttransplant care education. Complex medication regimes, changes in metabolism and nutrition absorption, and infection/rejection further complicate the prevention of readmission., Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the 30-day readmissions of single-organ liver transplant recipients for 1-year prior and 1-year following the implementation of nurse-led education. The study examined the demographics, clinical characteristics, and 30-day readmissions of 35 liver transplant recipients who participated in the newly designed nurse-led education and 51 liver transplant recipients who experienced the prior post-liver transplant education., Design: A single-center, correlational study with a convenience sample was conducted at a Hispanic-serving South Texas hospital. The new education intervention maintained the standard education and added twice-daily mutual patient-focused goal setting between the nurse and the recipient that aligned with readiness for discharge activities/goals, structured education using abbreviated handouts written at a second-grade level available in both English and Spanish, and the use of repetition through multimodal methods., Results: The odds for 30-day readmissions the year prior to the nurse-led patient education intervention were 2.088 times greater than the year following the implementation. Thirty-day readmissions were reduced by 16.3% from the 2017 cohort to the 2018 cohort., Discussion: Understanding unique risk factors facilitates structured patient education which can be individualized to the patient and caregiver including collaborative nurse-patient goals.

Background: One of the newest methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) antibiotics to receive FDA approval is ceftaroline fosamil, a member of a new subclass of cephalosporins with unique activity against MRSA. However, ceftaroline is currently only FDA approved for complicated skin/soft tissue infections and community-acquired pneumonia; there are currently no clinical data regarding its use in MRSA bacteraemia and endocarditis. We report a series of six patients in which ceftaroline was utilized as salvage monotherapy in persistent MRSA bacteraemia or endocarditis., Methods: Using pharmacy records, 11 ceftaroline-treated patients were identified between January 2011 and November 2011 at University Health System and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, TX, USA. All cases were reviewed and six patients received ceftaroline therapy for MRSA bacteraemia or endocarditis due to persistent or recurrent bacteraemia while on standard antibiotics (vancomycin or daptomycin)., Results: All six patients experienced rapid clearance of their bacteraemia after starting ceftaroline. In the case of endocarditis for which the patient subsequently developed heart failure and required valve replacement, there was no evidence of growth from cultures taken from the excised valve, suggesting sterilization within 13 days of starting ceftaroline., Conclusions: Ceftaroline exhibits potent anti-MRSA activity in both in vitro and animal studies, including rabbit endocarditis models; however, the lack of clinical data has limited its use in bacteraemia and endovascular infections in humans. We hope that this series serves as an initial stepping stone for further evaluation of this compound for more invasive infections due to MRSA.
